i know people get angry. >> he will not just get out of the car. out of nowhere or even with a disagreement. he was not a violent person. >> two men, two husbands, two fathers, they're dead. police say it started as road rage. neither wife can believe it. here's 9wants to know reporter anastasiya bolton. >> reporter: life at the moment doesn't make sense to kathy johnson. >> it i just couldn't fathom that. i still don't. it's just very hard. >> reporter: it doesn't make sense how her husband of 40 years would be killed on his way to work when he stopped to help an injured man lying in the road. >> those are just things, you know, that he would do. he would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. >> reporter: september 8th

stopped at 56th and pena early in the morning to help a man lying in the road. police say juan perez was hurt by another driver. perez didn't like how the man was driving according to investigators, stopped in the middle of the road, got out and allegedly yelled at that driver. that man told police he accidentally hit perez while trying to get away, road rage police called it. >> my husband was not that person. >> reporter: none of this makes sense to perez's wife was, what a great man he was and everybody that knows him can tell you that. so it's a big loss for all of us. it's hard to get through, but i just want everyone to know he was a great man. >> reporter: police reports say another car hit lina's husband while johnson was trying to get him out of the road. neither could get out of the

it didn't have to happen. two people could be living right now. >> reporter: the widows say they feel for each other. life right now doesn't make sense. anastasiya bolton, 9news. >> no one was charged in in incident. there was -- in this incident. there was another good samaritan who stopped to help perez, but he was able to get out of the way of the oncoming car. the driver who hit and kill the two men stayed on the scene. the lights on the underpass were out d the man shot and killed by police on cu boulder campus was discharged from the u.s. marine corps this year. the suspect was identified as 28-year-old brandon simmons. simmons enlisted in 2006 and was discharged in may, but details were not provided why he was discharged. police say simmons threatened someone with a knife in the parking lot of the champion center near the football field wednesday. when officers arrived, they

knife and was shot. a cu police officer and boulder police officer both shot the suspect. one is a four year veteran of the force. the other has been with boulder police for three years. both officers are on paid administrative leave. hurricane matthew slammed florida today. the eye of the storm hugging the coastline moving north bringing with it heavy rain, violent winds and dangerous storm surge that could reach up to 11 feet. hundre without power now and at least two people in florida have been killed by the storm. the storm has been downgraded to a category 2 but still has sustained winds 110 miles per hour. in north carolina residents are packing up and getting to higher ground. >> right now we have to prepare to worst and the worst will be excess of 10 inches of rain and winds between 40 and 50 miles an hour when the trees and ground are so soaked.

there's no way to avoid those thing. >> storm shelters are already open in buford county. officials urge people to start leaving now. the storm hit haiti earlier this week and killed almost 300 people there and there are fears that hundreds more could be dead. thousands were displaced after the storm flattened home, uprooted trees and inundated whole neighborhoods earlier in the week. the haitian red cross says shelters are short on water, food, medicine and are traveling to the hurricane affected areas. the american red cross of colorado and wyoming are sending disaster volunteers to florida to help with evacuation efforts. four people were deployed tuesday helping get people evacuated and set up the shelter. nationally the red cross sent more than 1,800 volunteers to the area. there are also digital volunteers monitoring social media on a national level to provide information to volunteers in the field. when forecasting hurricanes the national weather service

to help track storm activity. >> we take the entire fleet of satellites worldwide that can measure rainfall launched by different nations operated by different agencies and we stitched them together and here's an example of an accumulation of hurricane matthew. >> so that purple blob near the bottom of the screen shows rainfall accumulation. the storm dropped a lot at first. then it dropped more as it intensified from a category 1 to information directly to the national weather service. it has been downgraded to a category 2. both the clinton and trump campaigns are under fire today. the washington post just released video from 2005 of a conversation between trump and today show host billy bush. they were talking about women. the conversation includes several lewd comments about women all recorded on a hot

foul language talking about kissing and groping women saying when you're a star, they let you do it. trump and bush were arriving on set of days of our lives in an access hollywood bus for a trump cameo in a soap opera. in a statement to the post trump said it was locker room banter and bill clinton has said far worse to him on a golf course. meanwhile newly released e- mails of hillary clinton show senior white house officials were in close contact with the clinton campaign last year about te handle that fallout. the candidates will face off in a town hall style debate sunday. the obama administration is formally blaming the russian government for recent hacks into american political organizations. a statement from the department of homeland security links the kremlin to the e-mail leaks. the leaks are from the national democratic committee and from former secretary of state colin powell among others. there have been attempts to hack election systems in at

a spokesperson for russian president vladimir putin calls this nonsense. a lawsuit was filed against a forensic pathologist in michigan saying that burke ramsey killed his little sister. jonbenet ramsey was 6 year old when she was killed in 1996. dr. warner spitz said in a september interview that 9-year- old burke bludgeoned jonbenet to death. her parents were cleared by prosecutors in 2008 who said dna on the girl's underwear did not h anyone in the family. the rest of the people evacuated by a wildfire that destroyed eight homes in southern colorado are allowed back home. because of progress made fighting the beulah hill fire, residents were allowed to start returning home around 1:00 this afternoon. the fire was likely started by a spark from a cdot worker's excavator doing routine maintenance work in the area monday.

a new report shows people are living longer, but there are still challenges when it comes to global health. data from nearly 2,0 sciences showed life expectancy to improvements with sanitation, pollution and immunizations. however, during the same time period obesity related diseases and substance abuse skyrocketed. while most of the children in the u.s. are getting vaccinate against potentially dangerous diseases there are still a lot of kids missing their shots. new numbers from the centers for disease control and prevention show about 2% of kindergarten students were not fully vaccinated and they were not legally exempt last year.

a gorgeous way to end the workweek. we're at 65 degrees downtown, upper 60s in longmont, 70s in greeley, 50s from estes park south through nederland and evergreen, 50s in steamboat spring and kremmling. at the airport hanging onto loads of sunshine, winds relatively quiet and the temps in the mid-60s. here in the 9news backyard our temperatures at about 65, feeling good for friday evening, light jacket if you're heading out but no rain, no snowfall to deal with evening. right now on hd doppler 9 it's been quiet for us around here, mostly clear conditions, no rain to speak of. out there across florida certainly a different story as we continue to watch hurricane matthew as it slowly tracks through the coastline affecting portions of atlanta as well as the carolinas. you can see those outside feeder bands pushing well inland across the region. right now it has been downgraded to a category 2. so

and it's slowly moving up to the north which now is looking more so like it's going to make impact on south carolina just to the south of charleston later on tonight and then starts to veer north and east making its way through parts of north carolina by tomorrow afternoon, evening and then it will take that curve off to the south and drop down to a tropical storm. it will be interesting to see if this system continues to kind of take that u-turn that we kind of anticipated last night and kind of florida. again the rainfall, the storm surge, the extremely powerful wind are still going to be a concern even -- winds are still going to be a concern even though florida has gotten out of the thick of it. we will watch for devastating impacts across the carolinas, easily up to a foot of water across the carolinas coastline and really damaging conditions out there. tonight about 38 degrees, clear, quiet, should be another cold one. we say in the 30s across the eastern plains, 20s in grand

ouray. i'll fast forward through the futurecast of tomorrow morning you wake up to plenty of sunshine, perhaps a few high level clouds stream in across portions of the san juans, but that's about it. temps tomorrow warmer, 72, certainly a cool start to the morning, but by afternoon we'll have tons of sunshine out there. it should be gorgeous, a great afternoon to maybe head up to the high country and enjoy maybe some of that fresh snowfall on the peaks. mid- to upper 70s across the eastern plains foothills. we're at 73 degrees in boulder, arvada and aurora. tomorrow afternoon and in northern colorado another nice little warm-up with temperatures running about 5 degrees above our average. look at that. the rest of the weekend into the start of next week glorious and then perhaps a couple of light little showers on tuesday, a change of pace and then the 70s are back in no time. >> beautiful weekend. we're talking about this pumpkin chucking or chucking
