>> a reminder this is all happening with the next presidential debate set for this weekend. you can watch the debate sunday on channel 20 at 7 p.m. taking place the same time as sunday night football on 9news. turning now to hurricane matthew, the now category 2 storm is becoming a life threatening flood threat to georgia and south carolina. tonight the storm still has winds of 110 miles per hour. however, it is still expected to bring a dangerous storm surge and a foot of rain to communities along the co overnight into saturday. florida narrowly avoided a direct hit. at times math through's eye was only a short distance offshore -- matthew's eye was only a short distance offshore. it never made landfall. to the north of matthew a wall of water known as a storm surge has been building all day. >> reporter: this is what storm surge looks like. it's a fast moving fast rising

>> a large section of florida's east coast around daytona beach has lost power. nearly 1 million people around daytona beach are in the dark tonight. 100,000 others in orlando are also without electricity. the center of matthew is about 70 miles south of savannah, georgia, tonight. intense rain has soaked that city all evening. transformers have been exploding leaving those who did not evacuate in tornadoes tonight. in south carolina the water in charleston harbor is 3 feet higher than normal. that water will continue to rise as both the hurricane moves closer and high tide is reached at 1 a.m. it's expected the flooding along the coast of south carolina could be even worse than the catastrophic done during record setting storm last october. matthew is a very rare hurricane in many ways. it became the longest major hurricane to form after

5 on the all time list staying at least a category 3 for just over seven days. also matthew had a pressure so low only two named hurricanes to ever hit florida could match it. they were andrew and donna. hurricane experts are also looking at how matthew is following a similar path to a couple other storms, david in 1979 and floyd in 1999. 1979's hurricane david also hugged the florida coast similar to matthew. it hit th 5, then lowest most of its strength before hitting florida. >> matthew for a time wasn't the only hurricane in the atlantic. nicole is nearby and is back to being a tropical storm tonight. some wondered what would happen if hurricanes collided. we have that explanation on 9news.com and yes, it's happened before when wilma ran into alpha in 2005. coming up we'll introduce you to a colorado woman with

island dealing with the disaster. the university of denver free speech wall is meant to let students express themselves. now the university's chancellor is responding to students who say recent messages about race make them feel unsafe. the free speech wall is not maintained or managed by university staff. controversial messages began when someone crossed out the word black in black lives matter. them thursday a message written across several wall panels included lyrics to the song guilty of being whit threat that caught the university's attention. one lyric included the word lynched. in a statement du chancellor said the recent messages directly speaks to the racial tensions in our nation. >> it doesn't come with these simple dichotomy society likes to do, right? being pro black lives matter does not make you anti-white or anti-police. >> the chancellor urged the campus community to hold itself to a higher standard. her office says that it's

share their opinions in constructive ways. a former marine shot and killed by police at cu boulder had been discharged five months earlier of 28-year-old brandon simmons was an active marine from 2006 until may. the marine corps gave no other details. simmons was shot wednesday inside cu's champion center near the football field. police say he threatened someone with a swordlike knife in the parking lot and then entered the building. police say he was shot after he refused orders to drop the weapon and investigators say two officers with the city of boulder and with campus police opened fire. they still want to hear from people who were in the area when it happened. for the first time the obama administration publicly blamed russia for trying to influence the election by hacking political targets in america. homeland security and director of national intelligence also claim only russia's most senior official could have approved the hacks. alleged targets include the democratic national committee,

survivor diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago and had a double mastectomy. since then she's become a triathlete and all this exercise will come in handy saturday night. she'll be one of six women in this year's dancing with survivors competition at the galleria stone. mcgeary also had cancer as a child and said learning to fight back has been tough. >> i think one of the scariest things for me was just starting to feel empty like i had nothing left to give had worked so hard at everything. that was really frightening for me and that's i think one of the things that made me realize i needed to do some adjustment and some rebalancing and it's absolutely a process for every survivor. >> mcgeary says there is now no evidence of the disease in her body. the money she's helping raise by the foxtrot will be used by other breast cancer patients going through treatment. we'll post information about the pink fund on our website

relatives of a woman in north colorado were helping in haiti when hurricane matthew devastated that high land country this week -- island country this week. 9news reporter noel brennan was there when the call came through that brought the family a lot of relief. >> kind of been talking about how it was coming. >> reporter: a text message. >> that says all okay, love you, sis. >> reporter: means a lot. >> it was just okay at 9:30 this morning. >> reporter: especially >> once the weather was bad i started texting my sister. >> reporter: to hear back from the ones you love. >> i wasn't getting anything back in return. >> reporter: rochelle's sister stephanie is lindsey's mother. >> she's not safe in my mind until she's home. >> reporter: she and four other family members traveled to haiti last week. >> i don't think they figured it was going to be a category 4 hurricane. >> reporter: the family knew hurricane matthew was coming, but it didn't stop them from

>> i love you steph. >> i love you nana. >> reporter: at the airport. noel brennan, 9news. today we learned when it comes to hurricanes, fema doesn't just use satellite and other 10 to gauge the seriousness of -- technology to gauge the seriousness of the storm. it turns out they see what waffle house is doing. if the chain is serving its full menu, the storm severity is low. if only a limited menu is yellow. red is when the chain is closed. fema's top manager said if you get there and the waffle house is closed, that's really bad. >> who would have thought. hey there, meteorologist danielle grant in the weather center. we've been watching that snowfall along the higher peaks, just stunning out there driving into work, blue skies and snowfall and kind of the icing on top of the flattops as well, larry pierce capturing this great shot out there, still a couple little pockets

40s and along i-25, about 54 in broomfield, 50 degrees in boulder, 30s in estes park, kremmling and silverthorne, too. on hd doppler 9 what you see is what you get. it's been quiet weatherwise in colorado, all eyes across the atlantic coast line as hurricane matthew continues its track. it's just been riding parallel to the coastlines, but a bit of good news with this latest report out that the center of the storm system, the eye, is really beginning to br we are seeing signs that this system will start to weaken. the southeastern quadrant of this storm system is it really lacking afar as rainfall -- is really lacking as far as rainfall. however, the moisture is rolling inland along the i-95 corridor from charleston to savannah, extremely heavy amounts on the interstate. thus far only several hours into this event we're close to 4 inches in a lot of locations, about 1 1/2 inches in

up as the storm system potentially looks to barrel in within the next 12 hours or so right there along the coast line. still a cat 2. that means sustained winds 105 miles per hour. it's moving directly north as we speak, but it does look like it will take that hook pushing through north carolina as we go toward saturday evening dropping down to a cat 1 and then fully being offshore by sunday morning. it takes that turn, kind of that u-turn, so to speak, drops down to just a tropical storm still going to be something we'll keep a close eye on because the damage is not done yet. we're still not only anticipating some pretty incredible storm surge out there, some spots potentially seeing 11 feet of water coming in, just walls of water with this monstrous storm as well as the rain that's falling basically from wilmington south toward charleston into savannah looking easily at close to a foot of water. tonight in town much quieter,
