but still packing a serious punch. it brought torrential rains, flooding, and fierce winds, and now is blamed for at least 10 deaths in the us. it's left behind a trail of destruction hundredsover miles long. from the air we're just now getting a look at some of the damage left behind in florida. >> my heart just hurts for our neighbors. >> yeah, you get a little emotional talking at it. >> they just have a compte loss. >> reporter: most of the deaths reported were related to flooding, with some of the victims trapped in cars by rising water. and with hundreds killed by the storm in haiti, now health officials worn of a surge in cholera -- warn of a surge in cholera cases. at least 330 deaths are confirmed there, but other reports place the death toll closer to 900.

in haiti before the storm with a trip from his church, and decided to stay and help with recovery efforts. he says the storm spared heavily populated areas still recovering from the 2010 earthquake. thousands are in shelters and the government estimates more than a quarter million people need help. >. two palm springs police officers were killed this afternoon while responding to a family disputes. a third officer was also wounded. they were at the door of home when one suspect opened fire. the two officers killed, jose vega due to retire in december, and the other had had recently returned from maternity leave. >> he was a 35 year veteran of the palm springs police department. he was due to retire in december. he was working on a shift he was not scheduled to work on. he chose to work overtime today.

half. she just gave birth to a 4 month old baby. >> the injured officer is alert and doing well, and police say the suspect fled and has not yet been arrested. a 24-year-old woman was killed in glenwood springs, in what investigators call a case of extreme domestic violence. around 8:00 last night deputies responded to the pines apartments and found the woman's this morning. he was wanted on a previous domestic violence warrant, and now faces first-degree murder charges. the victim's name hasn't been released. >. firefighters are getting a handle on the free gulch fire burning near keystone. 15 to 20 acres have burned. it was reported after noon near the shooting range. no injuries reported.

several days. it's a colorado hazard. every year drivers are hurt or killed in crashes involving wild life. but things have changed along highway 9 near silver thorn. this week there was a ribbon cutting for the first ever wild life overpass. new safety improvements like wider shoulder, less slope and a wild life fence and deer guards have drastically the crashes. the wild life are guided onto the overpass by a ramp. >> we saw a 90 percent reduction in animal/vehicle collision. >> it deters them from walking out onto the highway. >> reporter: the first phase of the safety improvements have been finished. the second phase will be done by november. in all the project cost $50 million, and there was a grass roots movement that raised millions of dollars. one ranch owner put in more

in the line of duty last year was among those honored in a vigil tonight. he fell through a skylight in june of 2015 and died from injuries several weeks later. this weekend in maryland the us fire service is honoring the lives of 79 firefighters, including whelan who died in the line of duty in 2015. during a service tomorrow morning a bronze plaque bearing the names of fallen will be officially added to th memorial in maryland. a newly opened park in frisco ans the memory of a flight for life helicopter pilot killed in a crash in frisco. it crashed killing one and seriously injuring two on board. the new park opened today following a dedication ceremony. last july on the anniversary of the crash, his name also appears on a plaque on fallen heroes highway between

a denver marine missing in ax for more than 70 years was finally laid to rest this morning with full military honors. private first class ronald vossmer was buried next to his parents. he disappeared during a battle in 1973. last june his remains and the richmond homes mains of others were recovered, and they were transferred to the us for proper identification. the remains were finally recovered thanks in part to effort i those missing in action from world war ii. tonight breast cancer survivors are dancing the night away to help other parents. they're -- patients. they're helping to raise money for the treatment cost for those with cancer. they competed in dancing for survivors at the galleria of stone in denver. vincente arenas hosted the event, and you can see him dancing.

downtown. highs above average. 73 in denver, 79 in lamar, 70 in eagle, and 71 in grand junction. tomorrow if you're out early, mid-40s, clear skies, but winds out of the south warm us up quickly. upper 40s at the airport. the humidity levels increasing east of town, but downtown the humidity level is about 15 percent or so. and here in the 9 news backyard the moisture is acting like a blanket and keeping minimums up a bit. still tracking dangerous hurricane matthew, a category 1 set to be downgraded tomorrow as it moves offshore. it will move offshore, but there's been substantial flooding across the columbines today, and the forecast -- carolinas today, and the forecast models aren't really sure what to do with matthew once it goes offshore.

that, just dealing with the left over flooding, isolated tornadoes, and severe weather no doubt effecting those traveling tomorrow to that part of country. little moisture in southern colorado, but i think in denver and the plains a mild and dry day. highs above affirming. maybe even -- average, maybe even warmer than today in the 70s. maybe a quick burst of rain and snow high, telluride, about 9,000 feet. i don't think that moisture gets into denver, but some high cloud cover is possible in the afternoon. lows tonight, 30s in the high country, 40s for lower elevations, and nice quick jump 80 in lamars 70s in denver and 60s across the western slope. and in the denver metro area tonight just a beautiful saturday evening. not really all that cold just yet, but temperatures drop into
