part of his last three months to make a last push to deliver humans to mars. he will be at a brainstorming session in pittsburgh. scientists are pushing to get humans on the red planet some time in the 2030s. developing right now, two boston police officers are in critical condition. they were responding to a fight between two roommates when one of those roommates started shooting. officers shot and killed the suspect. tammy liter this has latest. >> reporter: this morning, two police officers struggling to survive. one of them shot multiple times during a domestic dispute turned gunfight in a boston neighborhood late wednesday. >> i need all cars to respond to east boston. we have a 303, possible officer shot. >> reporter: police said two roommates were having an argument when one pulled out a gun. when police arrived, the armed men began shooting at them and

any available cops go. >> reporter: shooters wounded in the exchange. >> we have some assist with going to the hospital. >> reporter: authorities briefly locked down the neighborhood until s.w.a.t. officers shot and killed the suspect. >> they were able to neutralize the subject, armed with some sort of an assault rifle who had on a ballistics vest. >> there were over 30 gunshots. >> yeah. >> and teams, the dogs, everybody. >> reporter: one of the officers has about 28 years on the police force and the second officer, a 12-year veteran. one of those officers went into surgery early this morning. both are in extremely critical condition. nbc news, boston. he is still in the hospital, but the man accused of setting off bomb in new york and new jersey will be in court.

and will appear in court via video conference. he will have to be transported to new york for separate charge in that state. there is no date set yet for that. if you're over by 12th avenue and yale, it's not you or your neighbor you smell. denver fire department said there's a large mercapsin leak. it's harmless but a nasty smelling gas. it's usually add to natural gas, that doesn't smell, so people know when something is leaking. this is not a the mercapsin leaking. it smells horrible but we're told it's harmless. a man accused of killing a man crossing the street will be in court today. 40-year-old christopher tar was drunk when he ran a red light in aurora. he hit and killed 22-year-old dalton mccreery. now, before dalton was hit, he pushed his friend out of the path of the car.

friend was the epitome of who he was. this is not the first time the suspect has been in trouble behind the wheel and has been convicted of careless driving, reckless driving, and dui. police are looking for who too far took off with a bench. cameras outside a home in littleton caught the thief on october 4. the suspect rolled up on roller disappeared. then he walked back up and swiped the bench. it's special because it's made out of old seats from red rocks amphitheater. the bench was sold on craigslist but the buy per returned it to the rightful owner after fining out it was stolen. a second thief may be involved. if anything looks familiar, call police. in the denver river north district, there is a push to

9 news, 66 degrees. we had some pretty dense fog around freely, fort morgan. now, skies are clear across the eastern plains and i'm not seeing much in the way of rain on radar. we had a few showers in southeast colorado that have pushed into oklahoma and kansas. so we're dry today and warming up quickly, currently 70 broomfield, 72 d.i.a., 61 freely, 63 fort collins, 50s and 60s through the foothills so we'll be in the 70s through the afternoon and lots of sunshine, 75 at 2:00, 76 at 3:00, 75 at 4:00, and tomorrow eta rhonda, 80s. >> wow. >> we're shivering and then sleeveless. >> quite the temperature swing but it's fall in colorado. this happens. i know we have another temperature swing next week.

you say more about that. thank you, becky. well, yesterday, like we were talking about that weather, but onto world news. the u.s. navy is celebrating its 241st birthday by dealing with missile strikes off the coast of yemen. president obama announced an authorize missile strike on three coastal radar sites. all three were knocked out. officials caution context is important here. these strikes came after a u.s. navy destroyer, u.s.s. mason, was twice this week. those came from an area in rebel-controlled areas of yemen where anti-american sentiment is strong. the u.s.s. mason was not hit, nobody was hurt. the only purpose of the strike was to destroy the radar that enabled the attack against the u.s.s. mason. nigeria's government said 21 school officials were released after being kidnapped and held by boko haram for two years.

what a difference a day makes. it's cliche but, oh, does it fit this afternoon. yesterday we were in the upper 40s. today we're already warmer than that and on our way to highs in the 70s. we've got sunshine right outside the denver metro area, fog has lifted from earlier this morning, and look at that, 72 degrees already out of d.i.a. we're cooler to our rt because fort collins and freely saw some of that fog so 59 each with low 60s in most of the eastern plains except springfield, who is now registering 80 degrees outside. here outside the 9 back yard, lots of sunshine, 66, beautiful afternoon shaping up for us, and a pretty dry one. we are right now 33 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday, 33 degrees!

collins, 16 degrees warmer for burlington. this trend will continue into tomorrow. across the region, rain, showers, heavy rain showers -- in fact, a couple thunderstorm in the mix, too, are pushing throughout north texas and oklahoma panhandle. that's behind the cool front that pros brought us cool weather yesterday or the tail end of the cold front that brought us that cold weather yesterday. to the northwest we go and that is where we have a new system coming in. this one is going to make breezy conditions and a slight cooloff over the weekend but it's actually the cold front behind this one that's going to bring us our bigger changes for next week. i am also keeping very close eye on hurricane nicole. nicole right now a category 3 storm. the eye of the hurricane is and has cross overred bermuda. they're seeing back side of that storm pushed through, carrying those very strong winds. that storm surge. and it's going to continue to push into the cool waters of
