reopen this weekend after a crime forced it to close for months. >> what happened after a great white shark busts inside a diver's cage with the diver still inside. >> and the broncos try to figure out how to break their losing streak. 9news starts now. a strange cloud of smoke rising over commerce city today caused a lot of concern until emergency managers were able to figure out what was in that cloud coming from refinery. around noon today the refinery started to vent a strange yellow smoke after the power went out at the plant. hazmat crews were called at the scene and told people living within 2 miles of the refinery to shelter in place. i-270 was shut down as a precaution. turns out xcel was working on the refinery when the power outage happened causing the strange release of smoke. it was not toxic and the cloud did not contain sulfur dioxide.

the operations going on across the facility safely shut down. so it's a safety mechanism. any time you see a flare it's a safety mechanism and we have permits that allow us to safely use our flares. we did their readings, the air monitoring readings on the ground, no so2. so the emissions that you saw, it looks worse than it is. it's catalyst. it's sort of like fine dust off of the clay catalyst. >> the state health department says that it does not ap risk to the community. air quality is still being monitored and no injuries have been reported. now you heard the clay that led to the smoke was called catalyst dust. other refineries have also talked about this material during similar incidents. catalyst dust is made up of silica, aluminum oxide and trace amounts of heavy metal. exposure to elevated concentrations may affect some people. if some of that settles on

off. in backyard gardens vegetables can develop a metallic taste even if they are washed. people have been told to get rid of those vegetables. fire spread quickly across douglas county near inspiration drive and north pinery lake road several miles east of e470. flames ran through the dry grass in the area. fire crews stopped it before reaching homes. yesterday around the same time another fire burned 30 acres in nearby pa. backyards of some homes. emergency crews in those areas are warning these two fires show just how dry it is now across the metro area and the need for people to be aware of that danger. we want to bring in meteorologist danielle grant in the weather center. not only are we dealing with really dry conditions, temperatures are unusually warm for the middle of october. >> we're running about 15 degrees above average. we don't have a specific fire season in colorado.

within any month of the year. mid-october in the dead of fall and we're still watching for high fire danger across colorado. we're looking at high to very high fire danger as we go throughout the next day or so. we'll keep a close eye on this throughout the next weekend because not only are temperatures warming up, we'll also watch extremely gusty winds. the winds pick up overnight in the foothill and the mountains 40 to 50 miles per hour westerly winds coming especially in larimer, weld county by tomorrow afternoon. i think we'll have an occasional gust around 20 to 25, the worst across the san luis valley where we have a red flag warning in place tomorrow afternoon, relative humidity values less than 11%. look at this. most of eastern colorado is sitting on a fire weather watch sunday just because our winds will pick up quite a bit out here. tomorrow once again we're watching the potential for

police about calls to cold crush and there have been over 400 in the past year, but many came from off-duty police officers working at the bar at the time. >> best case scenario, how quickly could they reopen? >> obviously the city and police department want to be working with this bar to get them to be reopened, but 14 days or so potentially. >> thank you. rosenberg's bagels and delicatessen in five points getting ready to reopen five months after a fire forced it to close. in may police say brian pattenson set fire to the apartment to cover up a murder there. since then the owner has been trying to get storefront ready to reopen. they've hosted pop-up locations around the metro area. this sunday, though, they'll finally be back home at their five points location with a few new menu items.

tomorrow. what's left of super typhoon songda will slam into oregon and washington and northern california. up to 20 inches of rain may also fall in some locations. experts are warning this could be the worst storm to hit that area in 50 years. a former police officer in mexico was accused of breaking the trust of his community, then running to the u.s. he was caught in aurora after police say that he tried to commit the same crime here. 9wants to year-old man was wanted for raping women in mexico and he was caught trying to get into another woman's home here. >> reporter: ricardo corral- venegas has been accused of raping women in two countries. the 25-year-old former cop from mexico is wanted there where reporters have given him the name the rapist. he tried to force his way into

called police. apt found and arrested the suspect in a restaurant nearby. that woman's story reminded the responding police officer of a sexual assault reported the week before in the same apartment complex. that day police say he sexually assaulted a woman and threatened to kill her and her 1-year-old son if she told. she also picked him out in a lineup. he asked the integrity of the evidence analysis. corral-venegas is in the arapahoe jail now without bond and faces a number of charges including sexual assault. anastasiya bolton, 9news. >> aurora police say there could be other victims. if you know of one, you're asked to call 303-739-6153. we also have this information

donald trump is planning to visit colorado springs and grand junction the day before his third and final debate with hillary clinton next week. the s come at a -- the visits come at a time when ballots will be mailed out to voters across the state. there will be tickets for both the trump's colorado springs and grand junction events. trump came out swinging against the growing group of women who have accused him of sexual misconduct. >> the stories are total fiction. they're 100% made up. they never happened. they never would happen. i don't think they'd happen with very many people, but they certainly aren't going to happen with me. >> trump labeled the women as fame seekers and said every claim made against him is utterly false. meanwhile president obama campaigned for hillary clinton today in cleveland.

allowed you to return from cuba with up to $100 of cigars and rum in your carry-on luggage. the human in this underwater cage is okay. now take a closer look at this video that shows a great white shark breaking through the cage near guadalupe island in the pacific ocean this week. the shark makes it all the way through the bar and gets a chunk the diver reaches the bar and escapes. a low cloud over japan made it appear a castle appeared out of thin air. weather conditions have to be just right to blanket the area in a thick mist and as the mist burns off the castle is revealed. this happened about 10 times a year, although this is the first time it's happened so far in 2016. >> almost looks like a fairytale out there.

here across colorado this afternoon and this evening, man, lunch with a view. look at this shot, andy goldman out there capturing the sights and sounds at echo lake, a bit of blue sky, and then here at chatfield state park basking in the beauty of that sunset. did you catch it? today was a warm one, not record breaking, not record tying but close. we hit 84 out at dia. that current record is still 85 last you can see our temperatures warm especially in southeastern colorado, mostly cloudy at the airport and the winds not a problem out of the south, southeast now about 5 miles per hour. in the 9news backyard extremely comfortable for a friday evening, 60 degrees, middle of october, no coats needed.

in, a completely difference story from what's going on across the west coast where they saw one storm system push in today. they're gearing up for tomorrow's storm that will linger into sunday. that will pack a huge punch. it will be extremely powerful. they already have high wind warnings in place for most of the west coast from seattle to portland south along i-5 through northern california. we're looking at aerial flood advisories already in place out there. what makes this storm so interesting isfa remnants of super typhoon songda that was earlier this week on the western side of the pacific is now captured back in the jet stream. it is pulling it back into the eastern side of the pacific and it's gearing up to slam into western washington and oregon as well. high winds, high seas. we could have waves 20 feet, just unreal and this sets up

landslides and trees and power lines will be down. it will be a mess this weekend. now they're bracing for the worst to come. the storm system just barely pushing onshore by tomorrow afternoon. i think the worst of it is late tomorrow night for seattle and portland. around here high pressure, hot and dry, feel like a broken record the past couple days, 52 degrees tonight, mostly cloudy, 40s and 50s for eastern colorado, extremely mild, s of a mountain wave cloud over the area. gusty winds tonight in the foothills. by 8 a.m. tomorrow we still have a few, but by afternoon no problems for that golf game, if you're heading up to the mountains, going to do some biking around town it, should be fantastic. tomorrow evening mostly clear skies. tomorrow warm, 81, a few early morning clouds, but those clear out and i think once again

where the broncos make a trip each year to play one of their biggest rivals in las vegas. lawmakers in nevada approved a plan to provide $700 million in public funding to build a new stadium from the raiders. the money will come from a tax on hotel rooms in vegas. about $1.50 will be added to each room a night to help pay for the stadium. it is estimated nearly half a million football fans will come to watch their teams play at these are artists conceptions of what a new stadium might look like. the raiders owner said all parties have worked extremely hard to develop and improve this tremendous stadium project that will serve as a proud new home for the entire raider
