begins as just speech, but then someone takes it a step further. >> straight talk from school leaders to students after the disturbing discovery of a nazi themed chat group. >> twists and turns for an event in boulder for donald trump, jr., why it was moved from the sink and what happened outside when supporters for both sides faced off. >> then back with the team, gary kubiak on his health and ending that broncos two game losing streak. 9news starts now. strong winds that kicked up this morning are still howling across colorado. the fire danger is just as extreme as the winds and one area of our state is facing a serious threat tonight from a fire that has just exploded. burning 15,000 acres since it started early this morning, more on that fire in a moment. first to the gusts that have been ever so strong this evening. we've seen gusts more than 60 miles per hour across parts of

pikes peak had a gust of nearly 90, monarch gust seeing gusts nearly 70 most of the day. the flags at csu give you an indication how fierce those winds have been. in the fort collins area the winds have been clocked at about 60 miles per hour. those gusts contributed to a small fire next to i-25 in fort collins this afternoon. fire crews got it out but not until after the fire ate up several acres. [ wind blowing ] thanks to linda wren for shooting this video from inside her frederick home, you can see those fall colors trying to hang onto the trees, plenty of yard work in linda's future. this is a fire in aurora, a difficult one to fight considering the winds in the metro area. flames burned through four townhouses. everyone got out okay. we'll have more on that fire in just a minute. now to what has become an emergency situation in southern colorado, nathan lundberg was on a flight out of colorado

a raging monster. in a few hours it destroyed more than 10,000 acres and tonight that number is up to over 15,000 acres. it started in custer county and now spread into pueblo county. it's burning in an area west of pueblo and walsenburg and east of westcliffe. there is no containment on the fire tonight and there is a lot of fuel to burn. this area has not seen a fire like this in 140 years. earlier in the day we heard 11,000 acres, now tonight 15,000 acres lost. 175 more are under mandatory evacuations tonight. five out buildings have also underred and there is no containment on -- burned and there is no containment on the fire right now. 9news reporter dan grossman is in westcliffe where thousands are being warned to be ready to go, if necessary. >> reporter: red flag warnings let the folks here know this could be possible, but they didn't know it would be this bad. 70 mile-per-hour gusts have pushed the junkins fire eastward into pueblo where more

>> it's a big mess. >> reporter: it wasn't without hesitation. >> some papers and pictures. >> reporter: that brian woods packed up his home just south of westcliffe. >> right up on top, yeah. >> reporter: six children, three deployed overseas, all of their things carefully tucked into his wooden home 2 miles from the junkins fire's advance. >> once you leave they don't want you coming back and i don't want to leave yet. >> reporter: gusts are responsible for brian's situation. >> it depends on the wind. >> reporter: as nearly 3,000 other evacuees also await their next move. >> we've seen this movie before. >> reporter: for the pueblo county sheriff this was familiar, only a week separated from the beulah hill fire, he knew the 80 firefighters on the ground were tired, the people they were trying to save worried. >> our thoughts and our hearts and prayers go out to the folks who were evacuated. >> reporter: heavy air support

until wednesday, but dozers brought promise that the rocky terrain became more manageable. >> all the papers that you need. >> reporter: even still families continued to prepare knowing what could come if it didn't. >> that was our house. i want to wait and see what the fire is going to do. >> reporter: temperatures tonight will be in the upper 30s which will knock down a lot of the smoke moving into tomorrow, but crews still worry about the wind conditions in the morning. in custer county dan grossman, 9news. >> we are keeping a close watch on levels both in southern colorado and here along the front range. danielle grant is tracking all of it and will join us in a few minutes with a look at a big cooldown on the way in the next 48 hours. firefighters in aurora had a fire that burned about four townhomes at about 3:00 this afternoon near the intersection of east louisiana and south tower road. flames heavily damaged four townhomes.

high wind firefighters -- contain the fire because of the high wind firefighters said. >> you're just chasing it at that point. the wind just pushes it everywhere. >> charcoal from a grill thrown away in a plastic trash can started it. the briquettes take time to cool, which is why they always should be thrown in a metal trash can. no one was hurt in the fire. when donald trump, jr. planned to hold a campaign a lot of people got the memo, but the restaurant did not. the sink says it did get a reservation for 50 people under a different name. when it learned via the news it was for a campaign event, managers told trump, jr. they could not host him. >> we don't think the sink of being a place where we can have big political events or rallies or things of that nature. of course, the trump campaign and donald trump, jr. would be more than welcome to dine at

beliefs or anything for that matter. >> president obama dined at the sink back in 2012. he did not give notice either, but it wasn't for a formal event. as for trump, jr., he moved his event to the montgomery house. outside hillary clinton supporters clashed with trump voters. >> shame on trump! shame on trump? >> hillary should go to prison! >> i love seeing this kind of movement in the heart of what's probably not exactly right? but that's what we are. we have the guts to come in all the places because my father wants to be the president for all americans. >> earlier today trump, jr. spoke at the centennial gun club. tomorrow his father will campaign in grand junction and colorado springs. the second day in a row senator bernie sanders stumped for clinton in colorado. this afternoon he rallied in fort collins at csu. during the democratic caucuses in march he had double the support of voters in larimer

boulder to support amendment 69 to repeal the current health insurance system and make coverage universal. last night he and senator elizabeth warren campaigned at the auraria campus in denver. by the end of the week you should receive your ballot in the mail. thousands went out today to registered voters in colorado. the process started at 8:00 this morning. with the election coming up in a few weeks the secretary of state's office asks voters get their ballots in the mail there are a number of drop boxes around denver to drop off your ballots. 9news is helping you sort through the blue books before you make your election picks. we're hosting two more debates to take a closer look at ballot questions tomorrow on channel 20. then october 20th we'll host a debate between the 6th congressional candidates mike coffman and morgan carroll. when using social media, you see the good and the bad. one colorado high school is taking a strong stance against what they're calling hate speech.

their derogatory and threatening comments online. 9news reporter victoria sanchez explains it all had to do with a neo-nazi facebook group. >> the group is called the fourth reich official and had members from various colorado schools. one was a boulder prep high schooler who pledged allegiance to the nazis, then took his own life last month. then another member of the group blew the whistle on the racist messages and school officials stepped in. >> what they come here looking for is a smaller sense of community. >> reporter: when into boulder prep, a quote from konfucius is the first thing you see. >> one year we decided to do a peace quilt. >> reporter: throughout the small school with around 100 students -- >> white squares are the pieces they went ahead and drew. >> reporter: -- inspirational messages from world leaders decorate the walls. it seems like hardly the breeding ground for a neo-nazi movement. >> i was absolutely terrified. >> reporter: the school headmaster couldn't believe what she was reading when a student showed her a private facebook chat between students

they called a war. 9news has blacked out names, photos and profanity, but some of the conversation is unnerving. we need vehicles and more weapons one student wrote. death to all jews and the n word another posted. when confronted, some of the teens said it was a joke. >> it's absolutely not a joking matter. >> reporter: the school decided to expel the five students involved. one appealed and she is allowed back in class after what justice. the swift action from the school is appropriate she says to keep her students safe. >> there have been too many examples where hate speech begins as just speech, but then someone takes it a step further. >> reporter: she believes there is a mental health issue with some of the students, but also says there's been a minimization of hate speech in society and the school will do what it can to teach the teens it won't be tolerated. >> more has to be done not just in our six hours of the day,

we don't have control over. >> reporter: tomorrow in class the students will see exactly what was said in the facebook group chat as the administrators plan to show them the screen shots. the headmaster says showing the students the hateful word that were used might prevent another incident like this from happening again. >> reading it in black and white right there, thank you, victoria. a man suspected of leaving a bomb outside the nederland police department now awaits extradition back to colorado. over the weekend 64-year-old david ansberry was arrested in chicago and is facing a federal explosives charge. last tuesday a detective found the bomb in a backpack. it may have been designed to detonate remotely using a cell phone. investigators used surveillance video from the store where the cell phone was purchased to identify ansberry as the suspect. at 3' 6 witnesses noticed his height. investigators believe this was

several states along the east coast tonight could see a rocket heading toward the

in two years and the first at this launch pad in virginia since another antares rocket exploded there. that explosion happened six seconds into the launch and was blamed in part on aiming soviet built rocket engines. this antares rocket has much newer rockets built by a russian company. the launch went as expected meaning new supplies should arrive at the international space station this week. a colorado spacecraft is giving us a look at mars in ways we've never seen the planet about. the maven spacecraft -- planet before. the maven spacecraft showed how strange and irregular the winds are on mars. the instrument that led to those findings were built at cu and the research that led to the latest findings are coming from work done in boulder. a duck in flight is nothing new. a duck on a flight is a different story. daniel, the emotional support duck, recently sat with his owner on a flight from charlotte to asheville in north carolina.

flying. daniel's red booties and captain america diaper turned plenty of heads as you can imagine. according to the owner, daniel is a 4-year-old indian runner duck certified for emotional support services. who knew? colorado and our neighbors to the east are dealing with some extreme temperatures for october. dodge city, kansas, hit 100 degrees today. for the first time ever since records have been kept there and those records go back to 1874. the hottest and coldest spots in the y here in our state in colorado and in oklahoma. gage, oklahoma, hit 102. several cities across the panhandle hit 100 today, all in this region. if you want a little natural air conditioning, gunnison, colorado, dropped down to 26 this morning. while we are seeing record heat and high winds across the front range and eastern plains, snow was starting to show up in northwestern colorado in the high country. a few inches fell today at steamboat.

news when that first chair will run and get the ski season going. >> oh, it will be here before we know it. it was all about the winds today. those winds were just ruthless and unruly especially in northern colorado, winds turning up a lot of dust. here across the denver metro area tough to make out the city skyline, peter capturing that nice shot of all the gorgeous you can't see much. 60 mile-per-hour gusts in fort morgan and greeley, 53 in fort collin and 30 and 40 mile-per- hour speeds at dia and boulder all because of the jet stream which has been riding high over colorado and our neighbors to the north. the jet stream is several miles up above the earth's surface and it is churning, 200 to 300 mile-per-hour winds mixing down here across the metro area and we certainly saw a good dose of those winds today. finally this evening they're

here, especially areas to south where they are still battling some wildfires. throughout the evening they quiet down along i-25. this takes us through tomorrow morning when they once again will start to pick up in the foothills gusting to around 20, 30 miles per hour around 3:00 our 4:00 and it should -- or 4:00 and it should be breezy in the metro area. fire danger down significantly across colorado compared to today. it will still be high and very high across south central keep that in mind as we are watching still for warm and windy conditions. today 90s in lamar and springfield, triple digits in dodge city, 79 in fort collins and 70s in rifle and grand junction this afternoon. tonight we're keeping thing cool, mostly clear skies now out at dia, temperatures in the mid-40s. the winds have backed off significantly. here in the 9news backyard nothing going on. i'm loving it. temperatures, though, now also in the mid-40s.

degree or so knocking down, across colorado a couple light rain showers, snow showers coming in toward estes park, rocky mountain national park. that's about it. it was all due to this front that swung through colorado earlier this morning, this afternoon kicking up those winds. as it marches east, it will make way for yet another storm system, this one just barely grazing northern colorado, but once again it will bring us a shot for a little bit of rain and snowfall, too much tonight we're down to 39, too. tonight we're down to 39, 30s and 40s tonight across eastern colorado and chillier in the mountains. the rest of the evening is quiet. by tomorrow morning the clouds are increasing across northwestern colorado as this system just nudges into the state. a little bit of rain potentially by 5 or 6 p.m. in larimer, weld county, some snowfall. that mainly stays north of i- 70. i'm thinking a couple of inches. that's about it. if you see the rain, you will be lucky. i think we'll be lucky if we

areas to the south won't get in on this storm system. temperatures will take a hit as this next storm starts sliding into the area bringing us back to more seasonal type readings at 64. overall it should be a dry day with brief evening rain showers. we stay in the low 70s in southeastern colorado, a nice break from the 90-degree heat you folks have dealt with, 50s in grand lake and estes park, nederland, low 60s in idaho springs. we'll keep it cool in the 60s where we should be time of year, northern colorado another dip wednesday, but we'll bring back the sunshine in full force. look at this weekend's forecast yet again back to mid- to upper 70s. so far for the broncos game it looks good. the one caveat to this gorgeous looking forecast is the fact that we -- [ audio difficulties ] >> i just lost part of what she's saying. >> it sounded like it was going to be so good, danielle. we'll try again later.

this summer's rio olympics did not go as planned for missy franklin. that smile that we have come to know so well faded a little bit as the spotlight shifted to other american swimming stars. missy, though, is back focusing on the future now putting rio in the past. she is determined to make a big comeback at the tokyo games in 2020. these days she's also making sure that children get the same opportunities in the pool that she did. 42million kids in the u.s. don't know how to swim. missy franklin is on a mission safe splash swim school in colorado spring. usa swimming is working to give children free and low cost swim lessons. >> i was thrown in the water at six months. i was grinning and laughing the whole time. a lot of kids, it's definitely something scary. so to get them in the water and show them what you can do in here look at all this stuff you can do in the pool that you can't on land like making it fun and exciting and getting them to love the water.

missy says she's been working with causes like this ever since returning from rio. she's also back in california continuing classes at cal- berkeley. >> can't get much better than that for swim coaches. the season just ended, but the work is underway to get coors field ready for 2017. we could see work crews tearing out large sections of seats in the upper deck along the first base side. the team says it's just annual maintenance to the ballpark. some of those old seats will be available for fans

from colorado's sports leader here's aaron matas. >> good evening. the avs are calling this the next era under brand-new coach jared bednar. so far the trademark of the era is a slow start for the second straight game. the avs spotted their opponent two 1st period goals.

second span to take command, but the next era is all about comebacks, too because for the second straight game the avs erased the deficit. the game tied 3-3. what a shot. in overtime it's the captain again, landeskog tipped in front, second of the game, won it for the avs in o.t., 4-3 the final. avs start the season 2-0. it was a good day down at broncos headquarters and it had nothing to do with how well practi w return to the team after sitting out last week with health issues. broncos insider mike klis turned his notebook into a medical journal if for just one day. >> reporter: the team meeting today was at 1:00. gary kubiak stood in front of his players for the first time since he took that ambulance ride eight days ago. he never brought up his health. what did he say to the team? guys, got to put those last two games behind us.

the nfl. it was business as usual for the broncos which is good because after losing their last two games the broncos have much business to conduct. kubiak said he didn't think the mini stroke he suffered three years ago was related to the complex migraine he had last sunday. >> they were different to me, but they've obviously had some conversations trying to discuss what happened both times, but to me they were different and like i said, but good. >> reporter: i thought kubiak looked a little pale, which is not uncommon after a week long absence. his voice was a little weaker, but he says he's fine. still feeling the effects? are you a little weak? going to be a little while before you're -- >> no. do i look weak? you trying to tell me something? >> reporter: i thought you were talking a little softer. >> that's probably because i've been hollering a lot this morning. >> reporter: kubiak doesn't have to play, so that's good.

players to play well, though, and that has to start this week against brock and the texans. mike klis, 9news. >> yes, that other big return, that of former broncos quarterback brock osweiler who shocked denver this offseason by leaving the team and signed with houston for big money. osweiler now has to come back and face that defense he watched win a super bowl in february. >> first things first you need to give denver credit. they're a terrif it's a very tough environment to play in up there. the home fans do a great job making noise and creating a great environment for the home team. so we understand that there's a great challenge ahead of us, but i'm going to treat this game no different than any other game. i'm going to prepare the same way. i'm going to prepare extremely hard. i'm going to go out and have a great week of practice and i'm going to understand the challenge ahead of us, but i look forward to that challenge. >> political answer from brock.
