skiers and borders raise the roof. a new season begins today. a basin opened up a couple hours ago. >> reporter: it's a cold morning this morning but the people are starting to get excited. the black mountain express is running. people are about to take their first turns. we operating office, with us. >> we are glad to get things going. we've had great weather. a lot of people are showing up. i just took a couple runs. the snow is fantastic. >> it's your 70th year, is that right? >> yes, 70 this december. we are excited to celebrate that. there is a lot of great ski history. >> i am sure you didn't get lines like this in 1946.

the season as there will be today. so it's a little bit different. >> what's exciting about opening day for you? >> i just like seeing the whole thing start up again, seeing those familiar faces, seeing the guests, the smiles, seeing our employees pull the whole thing together to get the place ready to go. it's just a really fun exciting time. >> wonderful, thank much, allen. a basin beat love hand in the race to be first. they do it every year. here is a live look at love land. they look close. the resort says they're hoping to open sometime next week. it's all about that snow making and those cool nights and everything else. they're not getting the real thing. >> today is pretty darn dry across the state. temperatures in the mountains are cold enough that a lot of them are making their own snow

we will continue to see that today. it's going to be awfully mild. look at the blue sky over fort collins, not a single cloud. beautiful. temperatures are in the upper 60s outside 9 news. there are some gusts out there between 10 and 15 miles an hour in our foothills. we are also very dry. you can see from the western slope to the eastern plains nothing is going on. it's going we don't even have warnings or watches for fire danger, at least in colorado. they are in the region and we'll be going over those. it is 73 near downtown denver, 74 around d.i.a., 61 greeley, 50s in the foothills. we will be in the 70s for the remainder of the of the noon with loads of sunshine. we have a cool off and maybe a chance for rain next week.

a day after, donald trump and hillary clinton sat in the same room at a charity event. there were some touching moments between the rivals. trump leaned over and told clinton she's a tough talented woman. this was during the alfred smith catholic charity dinner. it didn't take long for things to get ugly. >> reporter: the mood at the charity event was icy from the start. the two candidates new york's jovial cardinal timothy dolan, not acknowledging each other or shaking hands. donald trump taking the stage first poking fun at his wife melania. >> michelle obama gives a speech and everyone loves it. it's fantastic. they think she's absolutely

attention to the city of kirkuk overnight. more than 1 million people are believed to be inside the city. the extremists have a history of using civilians as human shields. u.s. military say they're working to keep the people safe. >> there are bad guys mixed in with the families, with women and children that are in the wrong place at the wrong time. none of us wants to kill innocent civilians. we go to great pains and lengths to make sure that does some progress in taking back mosul from isis. an iraqi general says they have full control over a nearby town. an american soldier lost his wife fighting the war on isis in iraq. the soldier died thursday after a road side bomb went off. his name is not being released but the government says he was an explosives disposal specialist. this is the first american death in the operation that started monday.

resin tensing hearing in colorado. a judge is considering a new sentence for raymond cane. he was 17 when he was convicted of killing 18 year old frost and the shooting of another woman in 1995. testimonies were held today in the hearing. the move was under a new ruling from u.s. supreme court that prevents juveniles to being sentenced to life without possibility of parole. if a judge approves he can get 30 years to for time served. firefighters are making good progress fighting the junkins fire, enough that it is finally safe for some evacuees to be home. there are some still neighborhoods off limits but some families got to go home yesterday. the fire forced more than 250 people out of their homes monday. wind knocked down a building into a power pole and that started the 28 square mile

backyard. this weather will continue through our weekend. when we think of the dry conditions, we also go to fire danger. fire danger is out there in the region, fortunately not for colorado. beautiful sunny skies and calm winds outside the studios at 9 news. you can probably hear my feet crunching on the leaves. it's a beautiful fall day. we are at 74 degrees at d.i.a. we are close to springfield. burlington you are at 75. we have 40s and 50s in the mountains. outside 9 news it is mostly sunny, calm winds, super mild at 67. it is just going to be a fantastic day, a dry day across the state. you see from the western slopes to the eastern plains there is not a lot going on. the mountains have seen some snow recently but not today. it will be bright and sunny this afternoon. the reason for the warm weather

upper levels, our jet stream. that's what this is showing. you see the depiction here. it will be between cooler air and warmer temperatures that are south of the polar jet stream. the jet stream sits on that green line. we have an arch across the western part of the country. that's allowing warm mild air to move into colorado and will be with us for several days. that cool air will stay well to our north. dry and windy in some southeast wyoming and western nebraska. from now through 5:00 p.m. we've got a red flag warning meaning high fire danger for far southeast wyoming, 40 wind gusts, relative humidity between 10 and 15% in that area. for saturday, a fire weather watch for the panhandle of nebraska with gusts to 40 miles per hour expected there. none of those are in effect across colorado. our wind gusts may get on the breezy side this afternoon but
