and final note related to the turn/pence campaign, donald trump will be back here on saturday at the fairgrounds event center. it's been nearly 20 years since jonbenet ramsey was found dead christmas day 1996. you're probably thinking you've heard it all, what more could there possibly be to learn, but you will not see what we're telling you recent specials on tv or books in the bookstore. kevin vaughn has this explosive report show -- exclusive report showing the dna it will investigators were relying on may not be the killer's dna after all. >> reporter: it's a murder with two competing theories.
1:09 am
killed christmas night 1996 by someone in her family, or she was killed by an intruder. for more than a decade, those theories played out in the tabloids, on tack radio, and even inside -- talk radio, and even inside the investigation. then: >> new evidence in the murder of jonbenet ramsey clearing her family of any involvement. >> repo: intruder theory. >> i wouldn't have done it because i don't think it was the role of the district attorney. >> reporter: other lawyers and her successor. >> i was appalled. >> reporter: and even the colorado governor who assembled a task force. >> i couldn't see any reason based on what she said to do so, never seen anything like that in the past from any other prosecutor, and couldn't believe she chose to do that. >> reporter: the decision was based on dna she said was conclusive.

behind on her panties and long johns. dna that would crack the case if it could be identified or matched. but the actual dna test results used to clear the ramseys, obtained exclusively by 9 news and the boulder daily camera tell a completely different story. >> i was always surprised at what she did, and now i'm deeply concerned. >> reporter: it's the latest controversy in a case problems. a bungled crime scene, in fighting among investigators and prosecutors. >> first of all, many of you know that last week. >> reporter: a decision by the former district attorney to drop charges authorized by a grand jury against john and patsy ramsey. mary lacy succeeded hunter as a strong supporter of the intruder theory. when she issued the exoneration letter and apologized to the ramseys, she created the impression that if someone

found, the case would be solved. >> we now have pretty irrefutable dna evidence according to the district attorney's office, and that's the most significant thing to me, and certainly they acknowledged that based on that we certainly couldn't have been involved. >> reporter: 9 wants to know and the daily camera took the same lab results to forensic experts. the first time th ever been independently evaluated, and the experts agree the dna results don't come close to proving that an intruder killed jonbenet. >> it's certainly possible an intruder was the killer, but it's not for sure. >> it's not positive of the presence of a perpetrator. there is foreign dna, but that foreign dna could easily be

innocent mechanisms. >> reporter: male dna was originally identified in jonbenet's underwear in testing in the late 1990ings and early 2000s. new tests were ordered in 2007 and 2008 on the long johns and night gowns, and that test lead her to exonerate at the time ramsey, something that confounded this investigator. >> there's a real danger saying we looked at this and categorically determined something. >> reporter: we questioned the exoneration on multiple fronts. first, the dna profile lacy said belonged to the killer may not be the profile of a singer person. >> there's a -- single person. >> there's a reasonable chance that what has been attributed to a single individual actually represents dna from multiple
1:13 am
of, um, cobbled together into a single profile. >> it's a rather obvious point, but if you're looking for someone that doesn't exist because it's several people, it's a problem. >> reporter: and as for the dna on the long johns, said to be conclusive, we believe it's a mixture of more than one person. >> it could be three people. >> lacy knew before exonerating the ramseys. this report went to her office three months before clearing the family. of the two spots on the long johns, the report say it's likely more than two people contributed to the mixture, and after eliminating jonbenet's dna, the remaining dna shouldn't be considered a single source profile. she knew based on your
1:14 am
potentially accumulated dna. she knew it at the time, and why she used this evidence to clear the ramsey family then, a clearance that's continued because it's only public record through today, is something i can't explain and she should explain. >> mary lacy has never talked about her decision to exonerate the ramsey, and we tried calling, e-mailing, sending her a letter and visiting her home. so far she's not responded. one person that is talking is lynn wood, john ramsey's attorney. he says he has absolute confidence in her integrity, and believes the case will be solved using dna. we have a longer statement from wood on www.9news.com. >> and this doesn't mean in any way that investigators can rule

killed jonbenet. >> right you, can't rule it in or out like you can't rule in or out any particular suspect. >> and you'll talk more about the testing? >> yes, tomorrow night we'll have more on the testing and what our experts think might have lead them to call off decisional testing in -- additional test not guilty 2008. >> all right, kevin, thank you so much. >> find the entire story www.9news.com. dailycamera.com, and tomorrow's paper. >. and investigators plan to search a land fill in weld county for a body of a 13 month old boy. the land fill is 80-miles from where the child is from. he disappeared tuesday, and the grandfather called wednesday. the mother says her boyfriend took him fishing. the officials believe he was
