developing story, in iowa police moved very quickly to identify and then arrest a suspect in the double murder of police officers in what appears to be an ambush style attack, tarhonda. >> yeah, oddly police say the suspect flagged down state employees on the road asking to call 911. he was arrested shortly after that. 46-year-old scott michael greene is in custody right now. police found an urbandale police officer shot dead on the front seat of his patrol car. 20 minutes later and 2 miles away they found the des in the front seat of his patrol car. he too died. fellow officers are devastated. >> these were our friends, our coworkers. we discussed at length at times the family of law enforcement. we said we are a tight-knit community. des moines is not a big city. we all know each other. so we are heart broken.
12:02 pm
it. there are no words at times like this. >> the suspect is apparently no stranger to the law. investigators say greene has had trouble with police dating back for years. happening right now, more than a dozen former students are camped out in front of heritage college in white ridge. >> they say they are angry. they want answers after the for profit school decided to close its doors yesterday afternoon. both students and parents say they feel blindsided. there was a note left on the being in -- building in denver off was the first and only word students got. the flier claims heritage doesn't have enough cash to keep its business running at this time. heritage college has educated students for healthcare careers for the past 30 years. the school has 10 campuses across the country and this closure will really impact all of them. students say they paid nearly $15,000 in tuition and they don't know if they will see a dime of that back. >> they could have been honest. they led us to believe that everything was okay.
12:03 pm
was wrong and just out of the blue it was just gone. >> so we are at the time of the year students are days away where they are supposed to be graduating. without degrees or certificates, they are worried about jobs and internships they already have lined up and they are worried they are not going to pan out. >> you wonder how college could do that, how they can close their doors like that. looking live over the high country in the metro area here, just a little bit of snow on the divide, maybe a little bit here in denver. like not a trace. don't even go looking for it. it's not there [ laughter ] >> but at least it feels a little more like fall today, right? >> it has over the past couple of days and danielle grant joins us here in the studio. a few sprinkles out there in the back yard this morning but they didn't last very long. >> huh-uh. this storm system, it's in and it is out, you guys. nice to see, though, some of that snowfall at least up in the high country. >> yeah. >> skis and snowboarders have been begging for it as well as the ski resorts so at least we picked up a couple of inches up there, but around denver what
12:04 pm
that is nothing but sunshine. up to the mountains we go and it is a gorgeous one, not only do they have fresh powder out there but also some bluebird skies and some of that sunshine too. that brief storm system just pushing through overnight, early this morning picking up on just a couple of light little rain drops here in downtown denver but now all is clear as we are starting to see our skies begin to clear out this afternoon. temperatures much cooler than average, finally, finally we are in the mid-50s in denver, low 60s right now in sterling, ray 40s, 50s up i country. the winds really haven't been a problem for us, gusting to around 20, 25 miles per hour across the far eastern plains. so we have this brief little cool-off happening today, then the sunshine builds back in and so will the heat too. wait until you see the temperatures for the next couple of days as we welcome in the month of november. here it is the first weekend of november and you guys won't believe the temperatures that you're going to see and also we got to reminder folks it is time to fall back. >> yes. >> pick up that extra hour, ladies. >> yes, i am going to sleep
12:05 pm
it will be good. >> we will get an update on those temperatures from you in just a few minutes. >> sounds good, thank you. remember those explosive device found in the backpack outside the nederland police department back in october? that device was designed to detonate remotely using a cell phone but on that day it failed to do that. the man accused of all of this has been indicted in the u.s. district court in denver. 64-year-old david ansberry is charged for use and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. a detective found the bomb in a backpack on octo ansberry was arrested in chicago a week later. if convicted he could face up to life in prison and a fine of $25,000. are you counting? i know i'm counting down. six days to go before the election and a new national poll shows the race is in a dead heat between hillary clinton and donald trump. >> both candidates and their running mates campaigning in key battleground states trying to get all the votes they can. they are here in colorado today too. chelsea clinton is in boulder. >> she is hoping to get all of those voters who still have
12:06 pm
them in. clinton spoke at about 9:00 this morning at a campaign office in boulder. lots of excitement at that office. now, last night she was actually in aurora speaking to another group. she had a get out and vote rally there. she talked about everything from early voting to gun rights. colorado gets a one daybreak from the clinton campaign and then we will see bill clinton here on friday. he will attend events in denver, ft. collins and pueblo. now republican vice presidential candidate mike pence is in loveland tonight. he's holding a rally at the ranch at th fairgrounds. the event starts at 5:30, doors open at 3:30. now, the campaign was still making tickets available on its website as of late this morning. pence also has stops today in new mexico and arizona. so very busy for both campaigns. >> it's very busy for two baseball teams tonight. it all comes down to game 7 of the world series. chicago cubs and cleveland indians. chicago cubs came up with the win last night to tie the series 3-3.
12:07 pm
tonight's decisive game 7 will be held. this could be history in the making. >> cubs have forced a game 7. >> i'm so happy for my hometown team. >> this is your team. >> i am a chicago girl, born and raised so this is a very exciting time. you know, what happened last night is a real good reminder that anything can really happen in those -- in the last few innings and in, you know, game 6, which was last night. so that was the game last night. you know, now the indians are really hoping that their on -- you know, can have a shutout, hopefully for them and then the cubs are -- >> but you're not hoping that. >> no, of course not. >> you're hoping kyle hendricks comes through? >> you know it. >> we have 27 more outs, this is so exciting. we are one step away. it's one step away. >> who is that guy? >> we don't know who he is but i kind of want to be his friend right now. i'm pumped up with him. there's nothing in sports like game 7 of the world series.
12:08 pm
teams have a very long history of wanting this championship. >> yeah. >> and -- >> somebody is going to get it tonight. >> go cubs, go. >> bill murray in the crowd been at all games cheering for the cubs. >> you were singing the song. >> go cubs go, go chicago. >> you deserve for sure. >> thank you. >> good luck to both of you today. do you know what time of year it is right now? it is open enrollment season, but are you even taking a look at your insurance policy? we will tellu be and get some help from an expert on selecting the best plan for you. but first, a bit of a cooldown, but guess what? it's not going to last long. danielle's full forecast is
12:11 pm
hi there. meteorologist danielle grant here in the back yard, we have a cool november afternoon on our hands. it feels nice, nice change of pace around here. up in the high country they are saying, yeah, we like this change of pace too, bringing in a little bit of snowfall with a weak storm that just crossed the state early this morning. justin schaefer capturing this great shot at the lovela area. thanking measure nature for bringing them a couple inches of snowfall and toby, his pup looks like he is enjoying the weather as well. winter park looking good too, a couple inches out there. unfortunately, though, the november outlook does not bode well for the high country as we potentially will be watching for below average precipitation and we certainly have seen that across the denver metro area with nothing but blue skies, the dry conditions really for the past month or two. temperatures, though, nice
12:12 pm
60s in sterling and fort morgan, about 43 in nederland and low 40s in leadville and silverthorne. out at the airport we have only warmed up a degree so far within the past hour, 56 with mostly sunny skies and the winds out of the north only 6 miles per hour. here in the 9 back yard things are looking pretty good. it's quiet and calm and our temperatures still hovering in the lower 50s, by this afternoon i think with all the sunshine we now are seeing that will allow our temperatures to pop up into the 60s, you can see those temperatures across we are talking about, 61 in ft. collins and greeley, a little bit warmer for the far eastern side of the state, 49 in frisco with some low 50s in hayden as well as grand junction. for now a couple of light flurries going in the high country down towards the san juans. you can see it's a storm system that was pushing in from the south bringing in a couple of rain showers to parts of mexico as well as texas, out to the pacific northwest they are getting doused with the rain yet again in seattle, and our
12:13 pm
rain showers, this system en route to cleveland, we will see if it possibly brings a couple of light showers to the tail end of the world series game 7. tonight here in town we are watching mostly clear skies, cool evening, down to about 36. the rest of this afternoon and this evening our skies just stay clear, the showers wind down up in the high country and tomorrow morning 8:00 a.m. you wake up, nothing but sunshine out there and that's pretty much going to be how the rest of our day shapes up too. tomorrow evening you can see a couple of light southwestern colorado. that's going to be another storm system pushing in from the southwest that potentially will bring a little bit of high country snowfall to the state. as far as the temps go, we are warming right back up again, low 70s on friday. we have a slight little chance of seeing a couple of light showers here in the metro area, perhaps saturday afternoon, we will keep it in the 60s for the start of next week and, of course, we are watching a couple more 70 and sunny days on our hands. don't go anywhere. 9news at noon returns right

12:16 pm
it is that time of year when you may have a lot of questions about your health insurance, whether you have insurance through your employer or through the state's health marketplace, you should be doing your research when it comes to open enrollment. but for many people the problem is knowing just where to begin. a recent study found a majority of people don't feel like they have a clear understanding of their health plan options so today we have some help for
12:17 pm
marguerite salazar is with me right now. thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> the number 1 thing i'm hearing from people and experiencing is that their premiums have gone up and their benefits have gone down. why is this happening and what can people do about it? >> i think people are still getting adjusted to having insurance, a lot of people have never had it before, so they are learning how to use it, they are learning how to pay for it and so every year we are seeing a little bit of market correction as the carriers figure out what it's going to cost them to cover people. >> and with insurance now being mandatory under the affordable care act, that's insurance through the affordable care act and the colorado health marketplace, more than a dozen counties, though, in our state don't have more than one insurance provider. there's just one. so for people who live in those counties where there's a single provider option under the individual plan, can they still have options within that provider and how do they search for those? >> yes, they can have. because even if there's just one carrier, they each have about 15 to 30 plans within that one carrier.
12:18 pm
off marketplace there are also four or five options for people to use if they don't need a subsidy. >> how does someone know if they need a different plan, if what they have isn't the right thing for them anymore? >> they will figure it out because one way will be because their insurance company writes to them and says they are no longer selling that particular plan and that they've got to choose another one. but i always remind people that you really have to shop. you have to look at what are your options and then what do you need as an individual or as a family, somewhere else? it's critical that people do take the time to see what their options are going to be. >> so while people are shopping, a lot of them look at the monthly premium and choose what's cheapest because that works for them. >> right. >> is that how we should be shopping? >> you know, it's a piece of it but they really need to check and see if their physician is a part of that plan, if the medications they take are going to be covered and what are the really -- one of the really good ways to do that is go to the plan finder that connect for health colorado has.
12:19 pm
will -- it will come up -- what will come up is all of the plans that their doctor is participating in or the hospital as well. >> and that's connect for health co.com? >> yes. >> say i'm looking for the hospital that i live next to and trying to find out if that's covered in the plan. can i call the insurance company, call the hospital? how do i figure out if my medication, my hospital, my doctor is part of the plan? >> you can do all of those things because everybody is trying to help people make the right decision so you can call your plan, you can go connect for health, their website or plan finder and then as a last resort if people aren't getting the information they need, they need to call the division of insurance and we can provide that information. >> this goes for people who are under their employer's insurance too, not just the individual, because most people are covered under their employer's insurance in companies. for those who are in the individual marketplace under the affordable care act, what are the deadlines they need to know? >> the deadlines, it started on the first, november 1st, yesterday. >> open enrollment.

12:22 pm
i ma assume that a person who is homeless doesn't want to
12:23 pm
that could not be farther from the truth. >> it's called the denver day works pilot program. the purpose is to get homeless people off the streets by giving them a job for the day. it is aimed at helping people who don't have a home but do have a will to go to work. the city is working with the nonprofit bay ad industries to make it happen so they started this morning, some workers were placed in city agencies for the day, others placed in private employers. and they will have a paycheck by the end of the day for all the work they are doing. they are going to make about $12 an hour. we are good people with superhearts. some of us out here just we are a paycheck away from being out here, you know? if i got a job, i'm not on the streets no more. i'm not begging for food. i got a job. >> that guy has the will to work. and you can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. sharea great program and
12:24 pm
too, that homeless -- tarhonda to that homeless problem we have been seeing in denver. >> i remember talking to the mayor about it and saying he goes out and other people go out and say, hey, you want a job? i got one for you right now. doesn't matter if you don't have an i.d. on you right now. no barriers. >> a job for a day. yeah. a school in wisconsin under fire for using tragedy to give students a reality check. so what do you think about this? bromhead high school told students four of their classmates died in a car accident announcement told students it was just a drill designed to show them what could happen. the school's principal said it was actually the student council's idea to do the drill as part of a safe driving campaign. >> lost a handful of fellow students. >> we knew it was going to create probably some talk but never this much. >> the school district spokesperson says the drill was not meant to upset or scare the students but they think this was a real life experience for

it's a boy! >> it's a boy. >> yea, an exciting announcement today on the morning show, not only did our friend colleen tell the world she is having a baby, she also told us what she is having, a little boy. look at that blue confetti. >> how much fun it is to share it with everybody out there. >> we are so happy for you. >> i don't know about the world [ laughter ] >> now i don't have to hide the bump anymore. if you've noticed i've been doing close shots. >> it is the cutest bump you have ever seen. >> to me it feels like a huge balloon. >> no way. >> we are glad we got to show that -- share that with you. watch colleen grow. >> so excited to see -- >> a little baby boy joining us. we will bring him here in february. we are due in february. >> february.
