the atf says it's scary any time guns are taken from dealers. 9news reporter jessica oh says the department a. thinks it's a growing trend. >> reporter: smash and grab at pony express firearms is the latest example of what could be a growing and concerning trend. deadly weapons are being stolen left and right in colorado. >> there has been an uptick without a doubt. >> reporter: this retired special agent with the atf says criminals used to steal guns because they needed weapons, t anymore. >> a lot of individuals will steal guns not to commit crimes but solely for financial gain. >> reporter: it has become its own category of crime. one firearm can be worth hundreds on the streets. this gun shop is in the 18th judicial district where the d.a. says there has been a surge in gun thefts this year. in june three gun shops in littleton were burglarized, two of them back to back. >> we're seeing a lot of ffl thefts where there are elaborate teams involved that

>> reporter: guns were stolen also from seven pawn shops in two months. more than 75% of guns the atf recovers are stolen, but -- >> the reality is 99.99% of all guns are not used in a crime. >> reporter: they'll most likely be used for personal reasons, but that doesn't mean the potential for danger disappears because the guns are not often recovered which makes them more difficult to track, an issue feared not to go away soon. >> the more la restricts it and tries to keep guns out of the wrong people's hands, the more techniques they'll come up with. >> reporter: keeping guns away from windows and using better surveillance equipment should help because more thieves see the stores as easy targets. >> there's a lot of money in guns of don't kid yourself. it's not always the cartel. >> reporter: jessica oh, 9news. >> in 2015 the atf reported 56 stolen firearms from licensed

stolen more than 60 guns. the pentagon today confirmed the eat of two american soldiers killed thursday in afghanistan. as members of the 10th special forces group based out of fort carson here in colorado. 30-year-old captain andrew byers and 34-year-old sergeant first class ryan gloyer were killed during a joint u.s. afghan raid targeting two senior taliban commanders. the soldiers had gotten off a helicopter and moving on with afghan forces when they came under fire. u.s. and afghan forces called in airstrikes. the attack also killed 26 afghan civilians and three afghan troops. residents later carried more than a dozen corpses including children to a local governor's office in a show of rage. nato and the pentagon describe the americans involved as being part of a training and advising mission. prosecutors decided to charge a man with murder after he drove 100 miles an hour over the speed limit before a hit

woman. tyler white is accused of driving his car 134 miles per hour near colorado boulevard and i-70. police say he crashed into 28- year-old ariel berryman's vehicle sending her car into another vehicle and then crashing into a cement barrier. she was killed. the crash happened on october 10th. according to court documents, white was later found naked in a lake at city park. white faces a number of charges including murder because he was driving so fast. he is being the denver district attorney has decided to retry the case against a man freed from prison in december last year after spending 28 years behind bars for a rape he says he did not commit. clarence moses spent those 28 years in prison for a 1987 rape and beating he said he didn't do and another man confessed to the crime in december last year. a judge overturned the conviction based on a lack of evidence.

>> basically the denver d.a.'s office believes there's a lot more to this case than just missing dna and a late, late confessing inmate. >> people protesting the d.a.'s decision this afternoon turned in a petition asking him to drop the charges. some say it's double jeopardy, but technically that's not true. for that to be the case moses would have had to be acquitted the first time around. liberal group progress now calls the ordeal a terrible miscarriage of the group says dna evidence that could have exonerated moses was destroyed and neglected by the d.a.'s office. police are looking into who painted graffiti on donald trump's campaign headquarters here in denver. denver campaign co-chair steve barlock said he arrived at his office to discover large while l's painted on the windows and thump thief and other nuts

and other insulting painted on the historic building. it's the only campaign office devoted exclusively to donald trump in colorado, but he won't let this deter the campaign. >> stay positive. we've got less than 100 hours on the campaign and we're going to keep working hard. >> the office attracted two protests since opening three months ago. police have not yet arrested anyone for the vandalism. former new york mayor rudy guiliani is scheduled to speak at a rally at this same office tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. much of the push is getting them to the polls and voting. as of yesterday in colorado according to the secretary of state, 70,000 more women have already voted compared to men. this year women have the choice of voting for someone of the same gender. political experts say that doesn't necessarily mean they're going to vote for hillary clinton. >> this election we've seen record turnout in general. we've seen record turnout from people of color and we've seen

propelling women to go to the polls? are they wanting to break that glass ceiling and vote for that candidate or are they voting on an issue particularly like sexual harassment or sexual assault that has been so at the top of this campaign? are they propelled by that? >> frolik says voters could go to the polls because of a negative issue, event or dislike of a candidate. it's pretty common to get complaints about political ads it's too mean, there's too much of it, but here in denver it's been going on quite a while. 9news photojournalist anne herbst gives us a look at political advertising's past. >> reporter: seems like everywhere you look right now you see this stuff and you're probably over it. the yard signs, ads, t-shirts and hats are nothing new.

all right. so everybody is focusing on the tight presidential race, but u.s. officials say the government has its eyes on potential threats to election day security. according to multiple u.s.

house and department of homeland security launched an unprecedented effort to protect the country against cyber attacks. worse case scenarios would include an attack on the u.s. power grid, part of the internet going down and an attack aimed at disabling communications and transportation in swing states. this election year calls for some levity. two comedians, one from colorado, are trying to help us laugh the thing off. >> marco rubio is trying to steal my girl friend. >> he's probably going to yours, too! >> grand junction native devron stefler and jason sellwig hit dozens of campaign stops in the past few months. the pair tells us the idea came to them the start of the election and after a few small sketches the thing took off. >> people are saying they're happy to have just some way to

no coats needed on yet again another november day. hi there, meteorologist danielle grant in the backyard where we have plenty of sunshine in downtown denver this afternoon. looking ahead to the weekend a couple hiccups here and there, but it should be fantastic otherwise. your head lines this weekend, be watching some snowfall in the mountains especially toward the san juan, 60s for days and days around here.

forecast and, of course, it is time to turn back time on sunday morning, plenty of blue outside downtown denver, friday, the weekend here. you can see it from here and it's going to be a nights one. low 70s this afternoon in the metro area, greeley 72, 74 in lamar, 50s and 60s up in the mountains yet again. 69 currently out at dia, plenty of sunshine with wind out of the southeast around 17 miles per hour. here in the 9news backyard our temperatures are right around 70 degrees, should be a thinking about heading downtown, maybe going out to dinner or something. light coat is probably all you'll need. our storm system that is starting to pull in just beginning to nudge portions of southwestern colorado bringing heavy rainfall to new mexico and arizona, spots that could use some of that, too and while we're at it we'll watch some of that snowfall above 10,000 feet toward telluride, box canyon, lake city and this is the view

sunshine in our state. snow showers late into tomorrow. the mountain passes might be tricky, slushy at times. there's that storm system and here it is around 5:00 tomorrow. we'll be talking about the snowfall rolling into the san juans, but look at that. a little rainfall potentially for just that southern tier of the state. down across the san juans a winter weather advisory is in place. this will continue until lunchtime or so tomorrow. areas above 11,000 feet, those higher peaks should see decent little less around 8,000, but the rest of this evening it's quiet around the front range and the eastern plains. we'll go with mostly clear skies with the rain and snow popping up overnight and then continuing through tomorrow morning. once again we remain dry and sunny at least to start. then you can see clouds lifting from the southwest right around 1:00, 2:00 and the shower also starting to push in closer to the i-70 corridor, none of it

aqib talib's back injury will keep him out of a second straight game. bradley roby filled in nicely last week and will do so again. meanwhile talib may not even travel with the team. the corner back got an injection for his back today and now needs to rest over the weekend. >> it's my understanding like they are giving it to calm down. he's feeling really good today in great spirits, but we just got to do the right thing and with the injection today the smart thing is to give him a good weekend to rest and see where we're at back. mike macintyre was not happy with his team, as you can see. the first time this year it appeared the buffs did not handle their success well, but they'll have another shot next week because the team got a successful outcome last night against ucla despite an incredibly poor performance, multiple penalties, many of them 15-yarders, four turnovers all in the 1st half, but a 20- 10 win of perhaps that's the

away, finding a way to get a win despite the ugliness. >> i told them we're here to be pac-12 champions. we didn't celebrate at all in there. i didn't. i want them to enjoy the win because they're so hard to come by, but we will not be able to reach our goal to the pac-12 championship with 13 penalties and four turnovers. the high school football regular season ends this weekend. 9news prep reporter where she's trying to figure out the playoff picture. >> reporter: there's a reason we're not all math majors. it might be time to start sharpening up those skills because that's what will be used to determine who makes the postseason. this year the colorado high school activities association introduced the football ratings percentage index or rpi to create a more objective process deciding who makes playoffs. >> they wanted some consistency
