take down incumbent senator michael bennet. >> he did have a late push, had some money come in and really made a run at it. >> we'll look now at the clinton gathering at the javits center in new york city. this was the place beneath the great glass ceiling that she intended to give her victory speech tonight which looks increasingly unlikely at this hour. those people are not participating in the new fad, the mannequin challenge. they are just standing still in place in shock at what they are seeing tonight. across town at the hilton trump supporters have gathered and their scene there looks similar to what we are hearing in colorado which is that people are hopeful. they are excited and some people are overwhelmed by emotion. >> as a crow flies, the hilton in new york is only 2 miles from the javits center, takes 20 miles going by cab and once

were thinking that it was so symbol toke see breaking -- symbolic to see breaking the glass ceiling of the javits center. >> we said the u.s. senate race about goes to incumbent democrat michael bennet. the closest race in colorado we thought would be the 60 congressional district which is the -- 6th congressional district which is the ring of suburbs southeast denver where mike coffman faces a challenge every two years. coffman survives again. there are republicans that will tell you mike coffman is the best politician in colorado. they mean he is somebody who wins against the odds again and again. tonight he has defeated democrat morgan carroll. >> 9news reporter ryan haarer

[ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: you can hear the applause, but this speech was really overshadowed by some pro trump supporters who were booing congressman mike coffman when he took the stage because of how he has talked about the trump campaign throughout his

her campaign tried to align the congressman with donald trump even though mike coffman said time and time again he does not support donald trump, that he might not vote for donald trump which is why it is so interesting that his wife, colorado attorney general cynthia coffman, did this as they walked off the stage. >> go trump! [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: now i don't know ho i haven't talked to her. maybe a house divided. i don't know how she voted. maybe she was trying to excite the crowd, but mike coffman never said the words donald trump. the crowd keyed into that. mike coffman said if he is elected and he was, that he would stand up to a president trump. we'll have to wait and see which candidate he'll have to stand up to come january. >> that was an astonishing

-- on a lot of fronts. something tells me if cynthia coffman decides to vacate that office, we may see that on a campaign commercial. >> let's go now to kim christiansen who is at the democratic headquarters. >> reporter: this crowd is a bit subdued. they have really been focused on the results in the presidential praise there. have been a few cheers -- race. there have been a fe but many, many gropes. the cheers had more -- groans. the cheers had more to do with senator michael bennet tonight. he spoke to the crowd. he has been criticized for often taking his time and coming out on a position on a hot button issue, but he has been praised also for working across the aisle many times, for instance, working with senator cory gardner. he addressed that point tonight, talked about the importance of somehow finding a

of this election. >> washington has a lot to learn from colorado and we need to set that example. [ cheering and applause ] >> so tonight i commit to you that i will work with our governor and our congressional delegation no matter how any of these races turn out to look for every opportunity to reach benefit of our state and to establish a model for every other state and delegation in the union. >> reporter: so that is the message tonight from senator bennett trying to encourage democrats in this room. as you know, he came out early in his support for hillary clinton, but tonight in talking to the party chair, he spoke with the fact he believes colorado is still very much a

colorado as far as hillary clinton was that they really embrac ed bernie sanders supporters and worked to try and get them to join them and support them in the idea that they should go democratic in the presidential race. now we have lost some of our crowd, but they are intensely focused on the results of the presidential race. i wish i could control the remote because floyd ciruli has been way ahead of this other cable news network, but i'm not >> this unnamed cable news network, all right, kim christiansen. >> he's always been spot on. we were now going back and going numerically starting with the 1st congressional district. dianna degette won reelection facing casper stockman, until

races. what you're seeing here is the presidential race in colorado, obviously colorado not going the way it appears the nation is going at this particular time. what we see here is the populated metro area counties including the swing counties that trump would have needed to win all went for clinton. >> absolutely. i think it was a bit of the ground game which has been best i can tell pretty strong in these counties. i also think they spent a lot here. we had bernie sanders here. we had al gore here. they had really been working hard to bring this in and they managed to hang on with five points. >> in counties like arapahoe, pretty sizable advantage for clinton. douglas county, we've talked about this, this went much more heavily for romney in the last presidential race than it's going for trump now. he needed to do better in some
10:14 pm
>> it wasn't like he didn't try. i think the republican party here struggled a long time with reconciling with trump and as you recall, mr. coffman never really endorsed him and senator gardner endorsed him sort of weakly toward the end. so he never really got i think the level of support that night have made the difference. >> -- might have made the difference. >> reporter: i switched this colors are the same. if we pop over to ballot questions, this is amendment 70 and green is yes, red is no, so think stop lights. this is the minimum wage question amendment 70 and you can see all the counties went yes for the minimum wage increase and it was pretty soft opposition in the red counties even in el paso. >> exactly. >> we got a little bit of a cutoff there. >> el paso interestingly while
10:15 pm
against it overwhelmingly. it was close. that was sort of a tip-off it was going to pass. >> the amendment 72 was the smoking tax. it did have support in boulder and barely in broomfield. all the swing counties totally unconvinced by the yes campaign that wanted to triple the tax on cigarettes. >> interestingly initially i before there was any advertising or anything back in august, just on the general impression that any burden you put on smoking reduces the amount of smoking and serves health. it wasn't till those ads started and we're talking $16 million spent that targeted a old pooing particularly to

going to a government program with money undefined. >> thanks for helping us with the insight on how they broke the way they broke. we'll turn to our political specialist, been with us all night, thank you so much you guys. so early on and for much of the evening we've been talking about the path to the presidency, but now that discussion is kind of changed a little. instead of lk path for the presidency for donald trump, we are talking about the path for the presidency to hillary clinton. what is that path, ian? >> at this point it looks like clinton has got about 209 electoral college votes. she needs to win nevada's six, minnesota and wisconsin's 10, michigan's 16. >> you're talking pretty much a sweep.
10:17 pm
and arizona which looks extremely unlikely. with us is health tilting to -- wisconsin is tilting to trump pretty heavily. democratic county haven't completed counting all their ballots yet, but at this opponent it looks like a narrow path for hillary. >> we had been talking about a narrow path for donald trump. >> it seems that the polling was wrong. that seems more apparent as every state is called. look at this opponent of a hillary clinton presidency is below 20%. >> if clinton was up by this margin, we would be talking about the inevitability of a clinton presidency and the only reason we're talking about a
10:18 pm
trump is doing so well. let's start talking about donald trump's presidency. here are the three promises. build a border wall and make mexico pay for it, ban all muslim immigrants from countries affected by terror and jail hillary clinton. what's most and least likely? >> the most likely are probably the wall and banning muslim immigrants those to congress. i think jailing hillary clinton might not be as likely. we'll see what happens with investigations regarding the clinton foundation. >> ian, which do you think? >> none of those are possessed as constitutional powers by the
10:19 pm
so it would take like kelly said, an act of congress, attorney general, investigative agency, act of the economy of mexico whose peso is collapsing at the moment, so i'm not sure they'll be able to build anything, let alone a wall we want them to build. i have been wrong about in election so far, so i'm not sure i'm the right guy to be putting odds on anything. >> appreciate the humility and analysis from both of you. thank you.
10:21 pm
there has been a republican watch party in the denver area and ryan haarer has been there at gop headquarters and we go there now. >> reporter: there crowd is finally calming down just a little bit after the mike coffman speech. people started to filter out a little, but still a very packed house here as people await the final word on the presidential election tonight.
10:22 pm
excited here. you've had a few speakers come up to the podium in the last half hour or so and really get this crowd going. it will be an interesting half hour to an hour or so as people continue drinking and cheering, guys. >> reporter: here at democratic headquarters kim christiansen, i can tell you we've lost about half our crowd. there have been some brief moments of governor hickenlooper took the stage and senator bennet who won reelection. he encouraged people to work together and move across the aisle. to be honest, observing the crowd, we have lost about laugh the crowd and i have seen many moments when one person has gone over to the other, hugged and consoled them as if they're deeply concerned about the presidential election. that is what they are focused on here at democratic headquarters. >> thanks, kim. we've got a lot more coming up on 9news.
10:25 pm

[ cheering and applause ] >> we had incredible volunteers on this campaign and i want you
10:26 pm
volunteers working on our effort in the 6th congressional district. those 4,200 volunteers, check this out, this is really about hard work. through their canvas attempts through voters it was literally over 1.5 million knocks and dials that were made on behalf of us in the 6th district. [ cheering and applause ] still a story of the grassroots and while this has no doubt again a tough odds taking on the koch brothers and some of the wealthiest pacs out there, we saw over 70,000 individuals donated coming to an average of $27 a donation. think about that. that is the power of people and it was the campaign we set out

people grassroots powered campaign by, four and about the people, but i will never -- for and about the people, but i will never regret and stop fighting for all the things we fought for on this campaign. our work still lies ahead. i will never stop fighting for better wages, a fairer tax cold, for racial equality, for lgbtq equality, for climate change, to make sure we're addressing clean energy, freedoms, making sure we achieve immigration reform, campaign finance reform, that we look out for everybody on retirement security. >> morgan carroll is definite getting her money's worth there. morgan carroll joins the long les of democrats defeated by -- list of democrats defeated by congressman mike coffman. >> to the javits center and hillary clinton's headquarters
