midnight when the republican reached the 270 electoral votes to end a long and suspensful night. democrat hillary clnton called to concede -- and congratulate him on the win. trump got a lead over hillary clinton by winning florida, ohio, and north carolina. pennsylvania put him over the edge and pretty much assured his victory. colorado went blue... but two of the biggest counties that went for donald trump were weld and douglas counties. 9news reporter tarhonda thomas is live with more on that -- we'll talk to her in just a few minutes. trump won the electoral and popular vote. you can see all the red..the red states in the south east, including florida keys for trump. that was more than clinton could overcome even after winning big states like new york and california.. good morning... the post-election day hangover is in full effect this morning. people... waking up after a night of celebrationss... others exhausted from a democratic loss. we have a full

stunned the world -- and won in an election pollsters did not see coming. donald trump claimed his presidential victory early this morning. he thanked hillary clinton for her years of service... and pledged to unify the country. it is shock for clinton supporters who saw almost every poll predicting her to win. at the clinton headquarters both in new york and colorado -- as the results came in state by stae, their spirits plummeted. in colorado people put their hands on their heads, some weeped. in new york, hillary clinton's campaign chairman tried to encourage the crowd with a positive message... about an hour before her concession call to trump.

colorado -- trump won nearly 45%. despite voting blue -- governor john hickenlooper says colorado is still a purple state. election in a row colorado has voted for the democratic nominee for president. voters chose barack obama in 2008 and 2012. but going back further -- the state's electoral votes went to the the republican nominee bob dole in 1996 -- and then george w. bush in

colorado voters also had to make decisions on nine different ballot measures. these are of course all unofficial until votes are verified by the 22nd. one is colorado- care -- which would have increased state taxes to fund health care for all here. but the measure did not pass. 80-percent of people voted no -- while only 20- percent voted yes. so no universal health care but many will be getting a raise soon. colorado voters chose to increase the minimum wage -- will increase to 12-dollars by 20-20. as for increasing the cigarette tax -- colorado voters don't want it to go up. 56-percent of people voted no to raising that tax -- compared to the 47 that voted yes. the increase would have gone to fund health programs. a measure that would allow doctors to give terminally ill paitents medication if a patient chooses physician assisted suicide passed handily

percent said no. another amendment -- regarding property tax exemption did not pass. 57-percent yes -- to 43-percent no. there will be stricter requirements for constitutional initiatives in colorado now. the so called raise the bar measure passed 57- to 43 percent. voters also voted yes on prop 107, which means colorado will hold presidential primaries instead au 64- to 36-percent. and colorado voters voted approved proposition 108 -- which will allow independents to vote in those promaries. they don't have to register with a political party the vote was 52- percent to 48- percent. and....a close call for the amendment to remove the term of slavery from the constitution. more than 50- percent of people voted no.

once the votes are counted -- 60-million more people could soon smoke marijuana recreationally. there is no vote to change the federal ban -- but five to allow recreational smoking. so far -- california, massachusetts, and nevada have voted yes. they're still counting votes in arizona and maine. as for the vote to allow medical marijuana -- florida and north dakota have voted yes. votes are still being counted in arkansas and montana. if all four pass the measure -- 24-million more people can smoke medical marijuana. already half of the states allow some

oregon, washington state, alaska, and washington d-c permit recreational smoking. if the measures pass, the votes could be worth billions of dollars in economic impact. here in colorado -- denver's social pot measure is too close to call right now. if passed -- the initiative would allow people to smoke pot in certain businesses like bars. the businesses would need to get a permit for the 'bring-your-own cannis another race to watch in colorado -- has been the fight for the 6th congressional district. republican mike coffman wins it. 9news reporter ryan haarer was at the gop watch party where they

the 45th president. he won the election by pulling in more than 270 electoral votes needed to win. colorado voters did vote for hillary clinton and several big counties did go read. -- red. weld and douglas counties were among those that went trump's way last night. >> reporter: yes, absolutely and two of the larger counties that did so but by far not the only. looking at a map that tallies it all up it looks like 40 counties went to donald trump. a lot of those were more rural counties but the bigger counties like boulder and denver sticking with hillary clinton and that really pushed ??r5her the top to win colorado but counties like douglas county did go red with donald trump and that did help him get quite a few votes even though he didn't win colorado.
