a nearby oil pipeline. standing rock is near the border between north and south dakota, about a 10 hour drive from denver. so we sent 9news reporter maya rodriguez and photojournalist anne herbst up there where changes in the weather could create new problems for those protesters. >> reporter: spring, summer, fall, those are the seasons that the people here at the standing rock camp have withstood sense april, but an even stronger challenge may be around the corner, winter. they cl protectors. >> we're all from all over the world. >> reporter: but at standing rock camp the protectors are also the protesters. >> we're winning because we've got a moral high ground. >> reporter: bengie buffalo is one of them, his white tent now a canvas. >> i should turn them in for graffiti. >> reporter: where people in this camp are leaving their personal mark. >> people all over the world. i figure from now on, all these

prayers are with us. >> reporter: foyer goal is to stop destruction of the final piece of the dakota access pipeline. >> i have children, also. so i don't want them to feel the repercussions of decisions that we've made. >> reporter: the $3.7 billion pipeline need a pending permit from the army corps of engineers to drill under the lake, part of the missouri river watershed and the main source of drinking water for the standing reservation. stopping the pipeline is the long term goal of the protesters. in the short term winter is coming. >> challenges are coming, the weather and wind and it's going to get cold soon. >> reporter: which is why temporary structures are going up at the camp and chopping firewood is a constant here. >> so we're here as people, not just natives but for all human beings. >> reporter: a unity that bengie buffalo says he'll be a

few months. >> you know, if we got a choice, we can makuta difference if we stand together in solidarity. so we can do it. i know we -- make a difference if we stand together in solidarity. so we can do it. i know we can. >> reporter: there is no end in sight for the standoff. despite that the people in the camp say they're willing to see that through despite the brutal winters north dakota is known fo the company behind the pipeline, did not respond to numerous requests for comment from 9news, but the company has said in the past the pipeline construction would create more than 1,000 jobs and help move over 4,000 barrels of oil every day across four states. those patriots did not waiver at the call and we're thankful for that.

all here because of those selfless acts. >> today is veterans day, a day to remember all the men and women who sacrificed their live for our freedom. it is also a day to thank active military members fighting for our country right now. fort logan had a ceremony today. dozens of veterans and their families attended. did you see the flag over i25 and the tech center today? they are there every year every patriotic holiday since 9/11. he stood on the union street bridge this morning and told us why he keeps coming back every year. >> love it because we get all people honking and people driving up telling stories about when they were in the service or how they love what we're doing and they get a sense of patriotism and if they can feel that sometime during the rest of the day, then everything that i'm doing right

the white house. pence takes over from new jersey governor chris christie who was heading the transition planning before trump's win on tuesday. christie will still be involved being named one of the several vice chairs. other transition team members are dr. ben carson, rudy guiliani and three of trump's children will be involved, also. students in denver walked out again in protest of donald trump's election country. in portland where trees turned -- protests turned violent last night crews cleaned up today. denver saw presses as well. some streets shut downtown. there are more protests planned tonight that could impact traffic. police in chicago are investigating a video going around social media. you might have seen it on facebook. i saw it on my feed. the video can be a little difficult to watch. police say the beating took place wednesday at a chicago intersection. officers responded to a battery

police say it started after the man's car was sideswiped. the people in the car this hit man then got out and started beating the driver. in the background bystanders were heard yelling things like you voted trump and don't vote trump. a chicago priest and activist denounced the actions of those in the video. >> this is not acceptable. you know, then we become just like those who we say are the mean spirited vulgar people of america. clear if politics actually was a motivating role in this incident. it was something as we said that bystanders were yelling about. investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. work on a broken water main is still underway this evening. around 6 a.m. today water was seen flooding an area on sixth avenue between logan and grant street. the pipe was first installed back in 1890.

so a deer apparently wanted to shop for fall fashions in an american eagle store in stillwater, oklahoma, last night. that's not the weird part.

deer, started recording on his cell phone and in the clip there you see the deer running through the rack before leaping through the window display and crashing through the glass. the glass just gave way. the deer ran off. at this point still not clear how the animal got inside the store. more than 3.5 million combination smoke and carbon monoxide are being recalled in the u.s. and they may be inside your home. this recall involves kiddie nighthawk talking combo smoke manufactured from june, 2004 through december, 2010. when the alarm reaches its seven year end of life and batteries are replaced, it can still make that chirping sound leading consumers to think it's still working when it's not. the problem poses a risk of not being alerted to a fire or carbon monoxide incident. kiddie has received eight reports of incidents, no injuries have been reported. you can contact the company for a free replacement. one of the nation's oldest

100 8-year-old world war 2 vet bill moore is in washington d.c. where he attended the annual veterans day breakfast at the white house. moore was an army sergeant with the 40 fest infantry division. he leaves in -- 40th infantry division. he leaves in pennsylvania. he marched into germany to liberate the he is excited about the journey to the capitol. >> reporter: tell the truth. are you excited a little bit? >> a little bit, but, you know, i was more proud to go overseas with the u.s. army. >> a lot of memories there. along with the white house breakfast moore plans to visit the world war ii memorial and he says when he gets to meet president obama, he's going to give him a little advice about

hi there, i'm meteorologist danielle grant in the backyard. we have some serious sky candy going on tonight. come closer to your screen. i want to show you so pictures out there. it's just stunning. this is our live camera overlooking fort collins and the sky halit up. it just looks like cotton candy out there, every color imaginable. we have clear skies in boulder.

pretty much the entire state looking abnormally dry. we do have moderate drought for the denver metro area up through fort collin and then across our south eastern plains as well. look at this, 30 days here in the denver metro area without any sort of precipitation and it looks like that trend will continue at least for the next week or so. today was our slight cool-off day and we still were above average at 61 degrees out at the airport, low 60s in we held strong mid- to upper 50s along the eastern plains and nice to feel more like fall around here even though it doesn't quite look like it. at the airport mostly cloudy skies, temperatures in the lower 50s, winds picking up a bit out of the southeast around 11 mile-per-hour. here in the 9news backyard our temperatures are right there at 56, a pleasant friday evening. i'd probably grab a jacket if

little rain for washington, oregon and into northern california and a little snowfall for new england. yeah, those higher elevation areas picking up a bit, but really there is the tune we're singing the next couple days on just how dry it is and how high pressure is anchored in across the west. tonight we're going with mostly cloudy skies, overnight lows about 33 and sunrise tomorrow morning 6:40. we'll cool thing off a little bit more along the eastern plains in the 20s and up high country with those clear skies even down to the teens in alamosa. the rest of tonight you can see not a lot going on, a few clouds in grand junction around 11 p.m. tomorrow morning we wake up 7 a.m., 9cares colorado shares is happening. we hope to see you out there. by 5 p.m. mostly cloudy skies and that's pretty much the name of the game this weekend. temperatures early on 7 a.m. at the situation, we have lots

-- locations, but we are the ones in the cold. tomorrow afternoon close to 70, eastern plains warming up with all this sunshine, 50s for the foothills, nederland 52, blackhawk 56, close to 70 in denver, aurora, bennett, 71 in littleton and longmont. you can see the extended forecast showing a brief little cool-off rolling in sunday. that's going to bring the high country areas maybe just a little dusting for us the winds pick up. the cloud increase. the temperatures just start to soar for the start of next week. finally that storm system we've all been looking at for thursday and friday next week, doesn't look like it's going to bring us any snowfall, but certainly up in the mountains, they should get a good dose which will be great news for the ski resorts opening up by next friday. >> just a little overdue. >> we'll take it.
