more snow in the forecast tonight and for the commute home. let's check in with our friend meteorologist danielle grant tracking everything for us. some areas have some really dangerous conditions. we could see even more dangerous conditions into early morning. >> certainly. we were talking about the fact that the storm system moves out late tonight still leaving water on the warm roads. we watched temperatures fall into the teens late tonight that. could mean slick conditions by tomorrow morning, black ice potentially setting up on our roadways across colorado. i want to of this storm system from our view here at 9news early this morning. the roads were not a problem getting to work or school, no issues. you can see that storm came in and the snow kept coming, a nice little blanket just on the grassy areas, roads becoming wet time to time. right now in the high country they are saying thank you so much, mother nature. it is about time breckenridge

of course, downtown denver a couple drops on our camera lens hurricane but this view is relatively decent from earlier today when we couldn't see the city sky -- lens, but this view is relatively decent from earlier today when we couldn't see the city skyline at all. our neighbors in parts of south dakota, wyoming and also nebraska picking up on some steady snows. for us up and down the i-25 corridor we've been watching the snow coming heaviest bands across the eastern plains where they initially saw rainfall quickly turning to snow with cooler temperatures. the storm system will be a fast one. i am anticipating it moving out after about 10 p.m. this evening, really light snowfall across the metro area. we have been watching that snowfall kind of sticking in the grassy surfaces and keeping it cool around here, a huge dropoff from our balmy 80 degrees yesterday. we have winter storm warnings in place for the northern and central mountains. that will continue until midnight tonight with winter

the front range, areas above about 9,000 feet and then across southeastern colorado they're saying what storm? red flag warnings, high wind warning in places like lamar, trinidad. wind gusts out of the north, 30 mile-per-hour gusts in fort collins, 26 in greeley, the northerly winds making their way into the city in the next hour or two. as far as temperatures go. i'm sure you felt the bite in the the interstate, 20s in the foothills now. looking ahead at what we anticipate the next several hours a little bit more snowfall. i have a couple totals i'll share with you in a bit. we're talking about an extremely cold night. that's where we're worried about the roads and sunshine popping out pretty soon. wait till you see that weekend forecast. this storm system will be a distant memory. of course, this has kind of been a good news/bad news situation up in the high country.

coming down. however, our man in the mountains matt renoux has been on the roads and you've seen the wrecks and everything going on. kind of bring us up to date, matt. >> reporter: you bet, danielle. a lot of closures and crashes especially on i-70 throughout the day, one of those crashes a fatality near silverthorne that's kept westbound i-70 closed most of the afternoon. it's only reopened here at the hn about 10 minutes ago. this day starting off warm and in the 50s and in about 30 minutes the temperatures dropped and so did the snow and that started causing huge problems along i-70. if november started slow -- >> follow the trucks nice and easy. >> reporter: -- tow truck drivers like martin castiron. >> keeping busy trying to get everything out of the way. we're making up for it today and tonight. >> reporter: started making up

winter weather. >> it's slick. >> reporter: heavy, wet and slick snow. >> it was pretty much calm and then all of a sudden it was really heavy. >> reporter: it sent big trucks and little cars spinning along i-70 in the mountains. >> cars were flying all over the place, all sides of the row. it was nuts. >> reporter: keeping tow truck drivers so busy they were running to pull or push stuck traffic with dozens of calls in just a few hours. >> at least 15. >> repr: traffic and ha november business rolling. >> we just get them up over the hill. >> reporter: this storm catching a lot of drivers off guard. it has been so warm and dry this november. then this storm rolled in so fast i think a lot of drivers weren't expecting to have to react to this kind of winter weather, but it looks and is reacting on the roads a lot more of what we should be seeing this time of year.

this for as bad as it is to drive, it's come just in time for keystone and copper mountain which had to delay their openings but will be opening tomorrow putting some people to work who have been waiting for this snow to roll in so they could start their jobs. >> yeah. we know they needed that moisture so badly up there. cdot taking a zero tolerance approach to the tire treads this year. you have to make sure you have the right tires if you're headed up i-70. >> reporter: that is that is an actual law that you must have adequate snow or all weather tires to make it up into the mountains. it's the traction and tread law in the state. today dozens and dozens of cars just unable to make it up the pitch to the tunnel had to be pushed by cdot trucks to keep traffic flowing. people need to make sure if they haven't already have good tires if they're heading into the hills. >> yeah. must be prepared. matt, thank you. speaking of weather

not stop for days. the water flooded the normally calm st. vrain river pouring into streets, businesses and homes. more than three years later one family from lyons got the keys to their home just in time for the holidays. 9news reporter victoria sanchez was there for the special dedications. >> here we go. one, two, three. here we go. this will be their first thanksgiving and christmas in their home in three years. we know it will be a good one. the man who admitted to killing three people and injuring nine others at a colorado springs planned parenthood cling will spend the anniversary of the shooting -- clinic will spend the anniversary of the shooting in a state mental hospital for another 90 day mental competency evaluation and return to court february 15th to the judge to send him back for another evaluation or find that the shooter is competent the shooter made more anti- abortion outbursts in court today as he has done in previous hearings. a man in handcuffs in the back of a patrol car managed to slip away from larimer county deputies. william morgan was arrested yesterday for an outstanding warrant. he escaped while deputies were arresting someone in loveland. deputies are looking for him. they say he's not necessarily a danger to the public. if you know where he is, call the larimer county sheriff's office. president donald trump is

possible cabinet and staff picks. at donald trump tower today he visited with former secretary of state henry kissinger. trump's transition team says the incoming president and kissinger discussed china, russia, france and the european union. a source close to donald trump tells nbc mitt romney is considered secretary of state and there are also reports that south carolina nikki haley is being considered for secretary of state. vice president-elect mike pence met with gop leaders on capitol hill and took a quick action on the donald trump agenda. >> we'll rebuild our military, revive our economy. >> the vice president-elect said he is county that donald trump's administration can find -- he is confident that donald

with democrats. nancy pelosi could possibly leave her position. ohio representative tim ryan announced he plans to challenge her. he said under the current leadership democrats have been reduced to the smallest minority since 1929. ryan says pelosi doesn't have enough support. she says she has support from 2/3 of the caucus. about the ball spent the day in germany -- president obama spent the day in germany as part of his final foreign tour. chancellor angela merkel and said he's cautiously optimistic about his successor. merkel said she's heard loud and clear that the united states might back away from the nato alliance if other countries don't pay their shaper. president obama said if a person isn't serious about the job of president, problems will be exposed quickly. >> there is something about the solemn responsibilities of that

a judge granted a request from state attorneys to keep brendan dassey in prison while prosecutors appeal a lower court's decision to overturn his conviction. yesterday the department of justice filed an emergency motion requesting a stay on the release of stacy. stacy's attorneys -- dassey's attorneys issued a statement saying in part, "we are disappointed more than words can say. the fight have the correct barrier to separate people and animals when a 3-year-old went into an endangered gorilla's enclosure. the zoo killed the gorilla because keepers worried that the child was in danger. the prosecutor did not pursue charges because he says the child simply got away from his mom. the inspection report says the

issues with the barrier that was found to be compliant in previous federal inspections. a cancer could soon become a leading cause of death in the united states. the disease is currently no. 1 with cancer at second, research indicates that the risk of the average person dying from heart disease has been declining faster than the risk of dying from cancer. experts say less people are smoking. overall researchers say the actual number of deaths from heart disease and are living longer. one in seven people will face a substance abuse disorder in their lifetime. that comes from a new government report today that calls attention to drug and alcohol addiction. it finds nearly 21 million people in the u.s. have a substance abuse disorder, more than the number of people with cancer. highly addictive opioid painkillers are used more often than tobacco now. >> if we afford the same compassion and care to people living with addiction that we

chronic illness, then i believe we will be able to address the addiction crisis in america. >> this is the first time that a surgeon general's report focused on drug and alcohol addiction. people are having a hard time breathing in the southeast because of several wildfires. this is video from pickens county, south carolina, near the north carolina border. more than 30 fires were burning across north carolina, south carolina, georgia, tennessee, alabama and kentucky at one point that. area i drought conditions. the fire we're seeing here, about 40% contained. it's burned more than 3,600 acres. back at home let's take another live look at i-70 at beaver brook near evergreen closed for a 20 car crash, no word what led up to the crash or if anyone was injured. evergreen fire and rescue, colorado state patrol and crews from jefferson county are working to clean up this mess.

well, i'm not entirely sure what camera that says. where is that exactly? is that fort collins or is that denver? it's hard to see because all the snow that's been falling throughout the day. by the way, we want to tell folks i-70 westbound two lanes are over now near beaver brook where that 20 car pileup had caused commotion for a couple hours. they're up to two lanes now, so good news there. >> real close to evergreen. now i can see the traffic a little bit. it's getting dark. it's been cloudy, gloomy and snowy all day and traffic is moving along like a typical rush hour right now, wet. >> it is a little bit early in the afternoon. everybody is driving a little bit slower. be careful out there.

have not been able to pronounce an s all day. maybe because i wasn't used to saying snow, danielle. >> that darn s word. >> i can't say s, f, nothing. it's like all the ss came out of my mouth. >> isn't this crazy? do you remember yesterday when i was out here and it was nothing but sunshine, practically getting a tan and now i am in this snow globe here in downtown denver as the snow continues to come down. up so excited. yes, this is what our mountain resort towns are supposed to look like, covered in white. in winter park they look fantastic and out in fort collins, more fun, maybe a couple students going to and from classes awfully quickly of downtown denver in front of our studios you can see that snowfall just starting to add up on the grassy surfaces, the roads wet and winds kicking up as our flags whip around and

sure. 80 degrees, folks out there in tank tops, flip-flops and today you're bundled up. if you're like me, maybe you forgot the gloves. tough to do this 180 turnaround in the closet. 47 degrees cooler this time than where we were yesterday, just 24 hours ago. it is biting out here, temperatures coming into us in the upper 20s. that's not including the winds, though, with low 30s in fort collins however, it's still mild in southeastern colorado where they're seeing temperatures in the 50s. for now at the airport winds are strong out of the northeast around 29 mile-per-hour. those are sustained winds at the airport, humidity 85%. look at this wind chill, 12 degrees. that's what we're talking about here in the 9news backyard. i know, no gloves. we'll get it right soon. 29 degrees here in the backyard with the snowfall continuing to come down. we have had some reports coming

inch or so. a lot of us were thinking are we going to set the record for the latest snowfall in denver? well, we finally saw our first snowflakes of the season, but this will be the third latest snowfall, november 19th , 1931 we saw an inch and then november 21st, 1934, an inch. so here we are. look at some of these snow reports coming into it, conifer around 3 inches, 1 1/2 inches in fort collins, monument an inch and the snowfallnt on hd doppler 9 you can see as this storm system just continues to rotate into northeastern colorado the heaviest snowfall in south dakota into the panhandle of nebraska and for us around here what you see is what you get. this will be with us at least the next several hours. about 10 p.m. everything quits. the advisories stretch from the western slope and high country through the northern plains where we have blizzard warnings in place through tonight for

snowfall winding down in the high country, picking up around the front range and also the eastern plains. they saw a little rainfall early on, but the temperatures dropped like that and now they're looking at some heavy bands of snow from julesburg south toward ray into burlington and there it is along i-76 a little light steady snowfall coming here to downtown denver which certainly will make the evening drive a slow one, a tricky one. as our ground is just so warm since it has the past couple days, we're seeing a lot of the snowfall melting. however, it's going to leave a little bit of water that. water will freeze tonight with these temperatures dipping to the teens for overnight lows. that means it could be an extremely icy night on the roads and into tomorrow, too. i think tomorrow morning's drove will be especially tough. set -- drive will be especially tough. set those alarm clocks a little bit earlier, maybe work from home, go in a little late. the snowfall will wind down

beginning to clear after midnight. 15 overnight in kremmling, 8 degrees in telluride and alamosa, 20s this evening in eastern colorado. it will be a cold one, certainly just biting. our storm system is it a fast mover that clears out overnight allowing high pressure to move back into the city. we're in for a gorgeous day tomorrow. sunshine returns, but the temperatures stay chilly. the rest of tonight we're hi disorganized. by about 11 p.m. might have a couple light flurries going in parts of jeffco and douglas county, but the bulk of this storm system is out of our hair. our skies clear. by tomorrow at 7 a.m. you wake up and you'll have plenty of sunshine out there. that's how pretty much the day rolls on, not a ton of cloud cover with us, but temperatures will be cold and the winds coming out of the northwest about 5 to 10 miles per hour. tomorrow daytime highs very

albeit we'll have some of that sunshine. it will be cosmetic, 40s in southeastern colorado tomorrow afternoon as well as parts of the western slope, too. we're at 29 in nederland tomorrow afternoon, mid-30s in evergreen, low 40s in arvada and lakewood. in northern colorado enjoy the sunshine. the snowfall will be long gone as we start to see it melting off fairly quickly. 57 on saturday, low 60s sunday, looks good for monday, but we in monday night into tuesday bringing us a good shot for showers. this time around i think it will be maybe more of a rain event during the day. as temperatures cool off tuesday evening we might get just a little bit of light snowfall out of it. then looking ahead toward the thanksgiving holiday, it looks really nice, quiet dry weather, comfortable temperatures right where they should be in the mid- 50s, seasonal. it looks like great traveling weather, too, whether you're staying in town, just have to

pileup. all the lanes are back up, so smooth sailing back at beaver brook at i-70. amy van is in town this week, colorado's gold medalist. she spoke for the institute. >> we met with her doing rehab at craig hospital in the weeks after she had an accident and since then she has become disabled and spinal cord research. 9news anchor gary shapiro emceed today's luncheon and got to visit with amy just after it ended. she was happy to stick around and talk about her life now. >> it used to be really hard for me to talk about the accident and i would have nightmares that night. it was awful, but it's actually cathartic for me to get it out. it's almost like if you tell the story over and over, it kind of becomes that. it becomes a story and i think

i'm getting a little bit more feeling back, if you will, lower and i'm walking with braces that they call kfos, so it camps up my hips and my knees and feet and i can actually walk with a walker. so that's what's new and exciting in my life. i do believe i will walk again. it's an interesting thing what i'm about to tell you, but it's a great time to be paralyzed because we have got amazing researchers who are doing things that are remember when we find a cure for spinal cord injuries, we'll also find it for als and parkinson's. so all of that combined we are going to find a cure and we'll learn more about the spinal cord. so i say this. i will walk someday and i will never give up. i will walk! >> you know what? she will. >> sure, she will. >> i believe it. she's got such a great message to share. of course, most people know amy

let's get a final check on the forecast this hour. danielle grant is in the weather have now. we've seen the problems that has caused along i-70 today, all this snow. >> certainly and even in the metro area slowing folks down on their thursday evening. it's cold, a huge dropoff from yesterday, but you factor in the wind and it is biting out there, 12 degrees what it feels like in denver, the chilliest spot on the map in colorado even colder in wyoming. this storm sy bringing snowfall out to the west and also along the i-25 corridor around the foothills, boulder, broomfield, arvada, looking at light snowfall for now. in northern colorado a couple pockets. we're starting to see drier air move in, but the thick of it along the eastern plains, julesburg, ray, burlington looking at heavy snowfall and that now is pushing into parts of nebraska. the rest of this evening you'll start to see the focus pushing

this is around 10:00 at night. if you live in douglas county, jeffco, there might be a few light flurries. after midnight the storm system clears out. we're well on our way to seeing sunshine tomorrow, but the temperatures won't be as toasty. we'll say in the upper 30s. it will definitely feel a lot colder with the northwesterly winds out there, too, 40s in sterling, a little warmer across southeastern colorado as well. temperatures climbing just in time for the weekend, 50s looks like another storm system monday night into tuesday bringing a little rain and possibly some snowfall and then so far that thanksgiving holiday looks pretty good to me, right where we should be, plenty of sunshine. so no issues as far as traveling. >> sure. we need every bit of moisture we can get. thanksgiving looks pretty nice, too. thank you. that will do it for us. thank so much for joining us this afternoon.

near evergreen. at least two deadly crashes, one on i-25 near i-76 and another on i-70 near silverthorne, weather likely a factor on the one near silverthorne. roads are wet and slick across the metro area. kathy is with us now and the cold will be the shock to the season. >> the first snowfall of the season, a wet sloppy evening commute, but the storm is already lifting to e heavy snow out of the metro area by about 8:00 or 9:00 tonight. roads are wet and sloppy, a couple inches of snow on the grass, this powerful low pressure system dropping a little further south than the models indicated. so the bands of precipitation moving through could drop another quick inch of accumulation on grassy surfaces. the whole low beginning to push into northeastern colorado and then eventually the midwest where blizzard warnings remain in effect tonight. the wind is a big piece of this
