>> the request i put on social media last night is i would like to know why you think things will be better. >> we are a visibly divided nation and i fear people and their response to all of this, their protests and riots and beatings of people because just i voted for somebody. that's what scares me. >> i am happy that i was able to do this and listen and i believe th necessarily change anybody in one conversation. and i wouldn't be out here trying to change anybody. welcome to let's just talk. a special hour-long edition of next. i'm kyle clark. this is a community conversation featuring coloradans from across the state and across the political spectrum. they disagree on politics, but very firmly agree that one thing we could use more of in
6:01 pm
people who don't always see eye to eye. we have more guests waiting in the wings to join us. go to 9news.com/votenow to weigh in as we discuss the topics. you'll see them pop up on the bottom of the screen. steve staeger is live on the next facebook page collecting your questions and to be streamed live on 9news.com. that is where the conversation will continue. let's get to know our neighbors just a little bit here. we'll do this by a show of hands. who here voted in the presidential election? this will be the last time i raise my hand for anything. you all voted and that tells us you are not a representative sample of colorado. because one in 4 registered voters in colorado did not vote in the presidential election.
6:02 pm
we did not prescreen our panels today for demographics. we did not ask about race or income or marital status or age. these are people who simply opted into the conversation from around colorado. but we did try to come up with a rough summation of how the presidential race sorted out. hands of everyone who voted for donald trump. hands of anyone who voted for someone else. matthew, johnson. in actuality, one out of 12 on this panel is actually an overrepresentation of those votes in colorado. quickly now in case there are crossover voters. where are my republicans at? democrats. un affiliated and third-party registered? all right. a bit of a mismatch there.
6:03 pm
hopeful for the next 4 years? crossover here as well. that's good. fearful of the next 4 years? mostly on this side of the room. regardless of whether or not you like the change you're about to see, who thinks there will be significant change in our country in the next 4 years? across the board in our first panel. anybody here undecided until the last minute? that doesn't surprise to come in and talk about your choices. last show of hands: any first time voters in this presidential election. rick and matt. love you matt. rick, you live in thornton, you're pushing 70 years old. thank you for your service. second, congratulations on registering. why now? >> basically two reasons: i've been told i have no right to
6:04 pm
vote. so i did so. second reason, it's on my bucket list. >> i hope you have many, many more elections left, but i'm glad you joined the party. what was your first experience like as a voter? >> it's a lot smoother than i thought it would be. it seems to me it took me longer to make up my mind and what i wanted and why i wanted what i wanted. but it was easy my choices and i -- i feel like i made a good choice. i'm only hopeful though that it's going to come true. >> so you voted for president- elect donald trump. >> i did. >> and you're hopeful for the future and i know that that hope is not shared universally here. hannah, you're from denver and i know that you have concerns about what the next 4 years are going to look like. >> absolutely.
6:05 pm
so for me, the most anti-lgbt platform ran and happened to get into office. so i'm very fearful for what policies and legislation might come down from that as well as how people are going to be treated. i mean there,'s already been a lot of reported hate crimes based off of it. >> what are your practical fears for the future? >> that people i love and people i know won't get fairly as someone else. i mean, i'm just a human. i'm like everybody else in this room. i just want to be loved and love people in return. >> chad, you voted for donald trump. how would you like to see america and colorado treat hannah and her friends and loved ones over the next years? >> with love and respect. we're been talking about how facebook has been a platform
6:06 pm
other from behind screens and it's lost the human dynamic of us being able to talk in person. totally respect her. with respect for sure. and i think -- my is i thk the federal government shouldn't be telling the state of colorado how we should morally behave. i think the citizens of colorado should vote on that. >> i want to ask you another quick question befo away: who of hands,
6:09 pm
welcome back to a special hour-long edition of next. let's just talk. this is our town hall where we gathered coloradans with different political opinions to talk about the election and years. during the break, we were having a conversation. hannah from denver, you were talking about the fact that this isn't just about policies. this is about your life as an lgbt american and about your rights. casesy, you voted for donald trump and you stood up and walked over and gave her a hug and said you're a beautiful person. i'm sorry you feel this way. do you also look at the situation and say she wouldn't
6:10 pm
won? >> i don't know. i'm -- i'm with you on that we need the federal government to not be in every single detail of our lives. and i think hannah and her relationships and her life in general should be hers. and the government should not have any say in that. >> so one thing that we have heard quite frequently in the media throughout the and then afterwards is depictions of the voters in the various camps and a lot of the democratic voters have been described as essentially slavishly loyal to the democrat party and trump supporters have been vilified as racists and exineo phobic and uneducated. i know that's something that matters to a number of you including eric. what would you like people to
6:11 pm
because they're meeting one right now. >> just that -- at least the people that i know, we're not racist. we're not small-minded. we think outside the box a lot of the time. and honestly, we -- at least me personally, i accept a lot of democrats in my life and work with them and i don't hate them. i don't feel any bad things about them. just because we disagree doesn't mean or you should hate me. >> we're definitely not deplorable. >> that is for sure. >> we're not that half of the basket. that was a complete turn-off when i heard that. i mean, i think politics sometimes goes too far. and that had nothing to do with nothing. calling people deplorable is not the answer. it's not the solution.
6:12 pm
concerned about togetherness. >> yes. >> at this point. >> i am. >> so the other side's right there. where do you see room for common ground and where do you draw the line and say i don't care if this is what you think, i can't accept this in my america? >> even just sitting here and listening to you all speak -- everyone here speak, i feel like my opinions have changed election. my opinions have changed. >> how so? >> i would say i -- i was raised very liberal. my family's very liberal. i've always just known that to be what i believe. and i've never really stepped outside my comfort zone and just been like, you know, i respect that, i -- you know, i like that they go out and vote and do what they need to do, but i never took the time to
6:13 pm
think these things. that's why i chose to come here today. i would never guess stepping into a room that any of these people voted for who they voted for. i think it's changed everything that i've believed in. everything that i've seen. and yes, it has brought some fear because i am a woman. i am a minority. and -- you know, similar fears that hannah has, i have for different reasons. and i think that this entire town hall so far to see that not everyone is that way. not everyone believes those things. it really does make me hopeful. >> shauna, let me ask you. you've fought hard not to let riffs develop in your life due to your support of donald trump. what are some of the things that people have said to you? >> well, they didn't have the guts to say it to my face.
6:14 pm
called me uneducated, a racist, a big on the. the big on the bigot part is my biggest issue because we all know what the definition of bogot is. it kind of defeats the purpose of you calling me that. it's caused problems at work. >> how have you overcome that? >> i actually pulled the that my opinions matter as much as theirs do. what they believe politically has nothing to do with me. i adore them as friends and that's how i want to stay. we can agree to disagree and not discuss politics anymore. >> real quickly before we go to break? gordon, i know that your goal is to make america kind again. we seem to have a consensus on kindness.
6:15 pm
thoughts on that. >> it comes to finding common ground. i think if anything i learned in this election about, as american people, we are a kind- hearted people, loving for othe that means immigration. that mes l of the things our american held for yes and years and years. let's fight for that together. we can probably make many of the tactics work. but as a people, let's agree to be >>you. i had a list of all these questions i thought wereally
6:18 pm
and welcome back to let's just talk. this is our hour-long town hall here on next gathered coloradans from across the political spectrum to have what is a really interesting productive conversation about what you agree about and disagree about here. we're coming up on the 30 minute mark where we're going to shift over to 9news.com. facebook live is where you can add your own comments and questions. we're discussing a lot of those on the facebook feed and the 9 news app feed.
6:19 pm
me to ask the clinton supporters and then the trump supporters: is there something donald trump could do in the next 4 years to win your support or lose your support. david, you voted for secretary clinton. can uconn receive of anything donald trump could do in the next 4 years? >> important things like not cozying up to russia. we're going to be entering new cold war. >> so you're saying there's no chance. >> yes, there is no chance. that is the unfortunate thing. >> you haven't heard him say anything where you say that i can get on board with? >> yes actually. one of the things he mentioned was n.a.t.o. and other countries not paying their way. i think it's important for us as the central payer in n.a.t.o. to express if one of us is
6:20 pm
we pay the -- >> president-elect trump was asked on 60 minutes about some of the hate crimes that have been seen across the country. he turned to the camera and told his supporters: stop it. i know you're particularly concern body how we treat our muslim neighbors. what would you like to see him do in that regard? there's a lot of heated campaign rhetoric. there are a lot of things said. i. >> i would say not take on things like registering muslims and taking a role in ensuring hate crimes and things don't continue. one of the things he commented was about the true heart of america. that is what i hope will come out during the presidency. i hope trump could foster that. if he doesn't, i think our nation is strong enough and good enough we could do that. >> is there something president- elect trump could do to win
6:21 pm
-- draining the swamp is what he kind of ran on. it seems like he's electing swamp-dwellers, i would say to be kind about it. >> he could still deliver that for you. >> when you talk about somebody on paper who would run for president and donald trump is obviously a great choice. however the rhetoric and absolutely he said things to people to identify with them to get them to vote for him. i don't think divicive and angry with each other as has been portrayed in that election. it gets people to watch and have an opinion. but i totally agree with you. we're a friendly nation. we're a nation of immigrants. we're a nation that pulls ourselves up by the boot straps. >> rob, real quickly, if there's something a president trump could do to earn your respect and vote.
6:22 pm
kind of some of the fringe voters out there. and a lot of that reach was this rhetoric, things that were said, things that were, you know, very antimuslim, antiimmigrant. and i think he really needs to address that. there are a lot of protests that are happening right now. i think they're -- they're valid reasons. there's a out there saying this is sore losers. i really don't think that's the case this. is america's reaction to when you use some of these tactics. you know, i'm an mba. i get it. in business, you know, it's really whatever it takes to get to that point. he's used that strategy and i think he needs to address that. i think he needs to specifically say i don't stand for these things, these things are wrong.
6:25 pm
6:26 pm
america. our conversation is going to continue at 6:30. we're about to hear from more viewers. quickly before we go, i hear a lot of common ground without ideological experience -- for everybody who voted for donald trump, do you understand the fears that we've heard on this stage and you'll fight to counteract them? >> absolutely.
6:29 pm
oh, my mariah. >> don't you dare! >> teasing, flirting all over her backup >> a crush on her. ? you don't have the slightest idea. >> sexy new scenes from her docuseries, but are the sparks real or could she be seeking revenge on her ex? then would you be okay if your man locked lips with his ex? that's exactly what marc anthony did. >> a kiss with mark that has everybody talking. >> plus -- ? ?
6:30 pm
whitney houston back to life. >> and the people have spoken. >> we're with dancing's final four sharing their last-minute strategies to win. which pro may never dance again? >> now for november 18, 2016, this is "entertainment tonight". >> it's a whole new mariah's world. her billionaire ex-fiance is out while her sexy backup dancer is definitely in. >> mimi has told us that actually there is nothing going on witt that n reality show seems to tell a different story. ? ? >> here's what's obvious. mariah and backup dancer brian tanaka are totally flirting in the new promo. >> he does have a crush on her. >> he's not leaving that easily. >> let's break it down. she sits on his lap and pours champagne on his abs and that's
