of the area now. we are grateful for less wind tonight. look at some of the peak gusts around the area, dramatic in wheat ridge wind over 70 miles per hour, the same in rocky plat and winds to almost -- rocky flat and winds to almost 60 miles per hour in boulder. winds to about 30 miles per hour over some of the higher passes. 34 already at dia, 45 denver. temperatures will continue to fall. skies remain clear tonight. one system is tracking east, another one on the way. this one winter weather and travel advisories well outside our state's border, no big travel issues with the second system we're tracking. so temperatures trend downward tonight as you might imagine. we are headed into the 20s under clear skies, but a nice warming trend kicks off tomorrow just in time for the weekend. there's another storm and snow back in denver's forecast. we'll tell you when and where

>> thanks, kathy. the wind is to blame for a fire in larimer county. poudre fire authority tweeted this fire picture off west highway 14 this morning. wind knocked over a power line starting the fire, but it did help firefighters at times blowing so hard the fire was put out in some spots. gusts reached speeds up to 40 miles per hour in the area this morning. no structures were threatened. the fire is contained. the day this year not as much terrain is open as normal. copper mountain said thanks to recent snow tomorrow they'll get more open at their union station lift thanks to the rush. >> luckily mother nature has been pitching in even if it's not as much as we would like. we diddic about up another 3- inch over-- we did pick up

controversial oil pipeline. a caravan 14 cars left durango tuesday morning for the 16 plus hour drive to standing rock reservation. since this summer people have protested the dakota access pipeline. the standing rock sioux says the pipeline threatens reservation drinking water and cultural sites. two people were killed and several injured in a shooting at a park in louisville, kentucky. two men died at the scene and four others were injured. the park was crowded with people attending a series youth football games. no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting. president-elect donald trump back on twitter to talk about keeping a large production plant from moving to mexico. trump tweeted he's working hard even on thanksgiving to try and get the carrier air conditioning plant to stay in indiana. earlier this year it announced the company was moving to mexico taking 1,400 jobs. trump often played reference to

running the frisco 5k turkey trot this year. his name is christmas. he apparently has a bit of an identity crisis. this turkey run was about 800 people and runners saw a few inches of fresh snow, but it wasn't a problem for those dressed to run for the holidays. >> we're here for the frisco turkey trot. why else would i be dressed like this? this is an everyday th good, insulated, not to mention this hat does some funny stuff when you're running, too. >> money from the frisco turkey trot goes to frisco elementary school and their science technology engineering and math program. this year it raised about $2,000. >> good stuff. windy but we ended the day with sunshine. however, we could see snow in

instead of shopping at black friday, you could go to the state parks across colorado for free. admission across the state is waived friday for what colorado parks and wildlife is appropriately calling fresh air friday. the state of colorado is known for many things, mountains, sunshine, the broncos, but there is something else that makes this state unique, the arts. tonight at 9:30 on channel 20 9news storyteller nelson garcia explores different forms of creativity aco music. hear from various artists motivated by various issues like crime, homelessness. it airs tonight at 9:00 on channel 20. in mountain towns they're doing what they can to give people snow to play on. frisco park is still trying to open their tubing hill, but it hasn't been cold enough to complete its full hill. they have blown enough snow to

crash at i-70 and central park avenue. we aren't exactly sure which direction these folks were going, but it does seem there is a bit of a backup in that area and one person did go to the hospital with very serious injuries. we'll keep an eye on that. hopefully things will clear up and it will be smooth sailing. switching gears we want to check in with chief meteorologist kathy sabine joining us in the backyard on this thanksgiving. happy to be with you today. >> so happy to be today and so grateful we don't have the wind that we had out here earlier today. the mountains are seeing snow, good travel conditions across the city and in and out of the high country. now that the snow has moved east and skies are clearing we've got a really cold night coming up. our high of 49 is where we should be this time of year. record temperatures in the mid- 70s, i think we're done with records this year.

at 8 at dia terminal and pressure on the rise. calm, clear in the backyard outside the studios, just under 40 degrees. the storm system we're tracking is well off to the east and brought another 3 to 6 inches of snow to areas like winter park, which is open. many resorts like steamboat saw several inches of snow overnight. many resorts are now able to open with this current pattern of storms rolling few days, so wonderful news, timed well for this system is racing east. the next one is onshore in the pacific northwest. high pressure is anchored overthe area and will push the moisture north of us. the snow forecast tomorrow for those traveling tomorrow, not overly impressive or super problematic, which is great news. a winter weather advisory is gone now for the high country. we've seen high pressure is starting to build into the western u.s. already. our storm is tracking into the midwest. snow or wind will increase and the next system is pushing

it looks as though that system we originally thought would bring snow sunday for the broncos game is headed to north dakota. we're enjoying a mild dry weather pattern the next couple days. we'll await this system in the pacific which will bring us snow monday into tuesday, big warming trend starting tomorrow. highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s the next two days. it will be a cool one tonight. highs tomorrow way above average, so enjoy. not as much wind, lots of sunshine and evergreen, 42 in nederland. winds of 60 and 70 miles per hour in the foothills i don't think we'll have to concern ourselves with that tonight. clear, cold tonight, low 23, less wind, sun up tomorrow about 7:00. temperatures around 53 at lunchtime, close to 60 in the afternoon, so 10 degrees warmer than average, a trend continuing through saturday. it's cooler sunday, but i took the snow out, put a few flurries in monday night and

from colorado's sports leader here's rod mackey. >> the good part about playing on christmas is the broncos got thanksgiving off. let me clarify. they didn't have a game like six others did, but they did practice indoors as they continue to get ready for kansas city. the thing is, football is as much a part of thanksgiving as thiskether watching on tv or playing rd, something the broncos said they did as kids. >> yeah.

whole neighborhood, pretty much every thanksgiving back in california for me when i was younger. it seem like it was always raining or about to rain. so we just called it the mud bowl and pretty much the whole neighborhood there, which was like 40 on 40 playing against each other. so it was real fun. so it was a great memory for me. >> i used to be too rough. they wouldn't let me play. >> reporter: you play in the street? >> yeah. i was play is in the streets with my -- streets with my older cousin. i was young, but i'd be big and they'd bring me to play ball and i'd be beating up on them and i was just a little kid. so it was fun. the lions have played on turkey day since 1934. former onco kicker matt prater playing here with the game tying and winning field goal in the last two minutes of the 4th. a walk-off lions beat the vikings, 16-13. steelers visit the colts later
