stabbing incident took place on campus earlier this morning. officials say a student plowed into a crowd on campus with a car and then jumped out and started stabbing people with a butcher knife. that suspects, an 18-year-old ohio state student, police say is a somali refugee who was a legal permanent resident of the united states. officials do not have a motive at this time but do say the attack was done on purpose. police say they sh that suspect. >> i heard multiple gunshots. i wasn't sure if it was real but i looked out the window and saw that it was really happening. >> it's not real. you go gnome. it's not supposed to happen. sorry. [ crying ]. so yeah. it's scary. it was really scary. we barricaded ourselves in our

we just hunkered down. >> a very scary morning for folks on campus. about 66,000 students attend that school and then you have professors and all sorts of other people working on campus. 10 people were taken to the hospital after those stabbings. one is in critical condition. the initial incident was reported as an active shooter situation but the suspect did not shoot anybody. police say the campus is now secure and canceled for the rest of the day. again, just a tough situation there on the ohio state university campus this morning. if we get any more updates we wi pass it ong to you. back in colorado, the truck driver accused of killing a state trooper over the holiday weekend drifted while driving, hitting the trooper. 41-year-old no good has release

ruiz has appeared in court today. according to court records, the semi driver crossed the solid white fog line and hit cooper cody donahue. the driver immediately pulled over. investigators revied the video from the semi and the troopers car and it appears the semi drd hit the trooper. the funeral for the trooper is set for this friday. degrees in snowy roads along the high country. take a live look right now. a lot of snow still left on the roads and on the side of the roads. this is a look at i-70 west. it has been a pretty chilly morning so far. >> a real shock to the system out there.>> for sure. partly sunny skies today but chilly weather and wind is going to stick around so it's going to feel cold.

outside, we have mostly cloudy skies sitting over downtown denver. i see a few's weeks -- peaks of sunshine. downtown and dia in the 50s. 45 degrees for fort collins, 47 degrees for greeley and 20s and 30s in the foothills. wins will be gusty in the denver metro area but especially in our foothills. impacting our systems. we have winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings in effect through tuesday. so far, 1 to 4 inches has fallen around steamboat springs, l through cameron pass, and also down into winter park, copper mountain, and berthoud pass. a few more inches of snow on the way. most of that continues until early tuesday morning and then this system will move out. all the while, we are stil

another day this week we have recent months. denver public works conducted the sweeps focusing on park avenue west and lawrence street near the site of the sweeps that happened just about two weeks ago. during the sweep, notices were distributed telling people to clear their belongings of the sidewalks. mayor michael hancock says the cleanups are needed to keep denver safe and sanitary. wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania are three states where election recounts could happen as early as this week.

thursday and has to be done within 35 days of election day. we are also hearing that green party candidate jill stein filed for a recount i believe in pennsylvania. now she, jill stein has raised $6.2 million from that recount so far. now that the recount has been initiated in wisconsin, hillary clinton's campaign intends to back it they say. they say they want to see a fair process for all. ji

he also went to twitter to call clinton pretty hypocritical for supporting the recount. potential jurors are being questioned in the federal death penalty trial of a man charged with fatally shooting nine african-americans at a south carolina church. today, the judge ruled that the suspect can represent himself on charges including hate crimes. the judge said he would reluctantly accept what he called a cloak -- "unwise decision" which also came against his lawyer's advice. this is what it looked like in havana, cuba just moments age death of fidel castro. sarah rosario joins us from little havana, miami where crowds say that they are not celebratin death but instead they hope for a new chapter of freedom. >> reporter: dancing on sidewalks, to the rhythms of pots and pans, cuban-americans in miami haven't stopped partying since friday. >> i would call him a dictator,

>> reporter: celebrating the death of cuban president fidel castro, who ruled for more than 50 years. >> hopefully we will have a future democracy in cuba and i will be able to visit the land of my birth. >> reporter: even though his brother raul castro is in charge, residents in little havana hope communist ideologies died with fidel castro making room for prosperity and freedom. a good thing for the economy, tours him. american airlines and launched the first commercial flight from miami and new york to havana. another step toward restoring diatic lations. this as cubans in the homeland are in the midst of nine days of mourning. today, they will pass fidel castro's remains in revelation square, a somber atmosphere with many protesters known as the ladies in white, forced to celebrate behind closed doors telling nbc news they would be put in jail if they marched the streets.

sterling, 28 miles per hour around burlington. even ogallala, nebraska is seeing 49 miles per hour guests. 16 miles per hour gusts registering at fort collins. our guests will be in the 15 to 20 miles per hour range along i- 25 but out to the west in the foothills is where we will see the strongest gusts today ranging between 20 and 30 meet me. also to our west is where this storm system lies. storms continue to pour into the western half of colorado. that storm system is now basically passed us. our temperature -- our system intermountain west including through colorado's mountains. that will continue to happen until about tuesday morning. at that point, you will see snow significantly die down. all the while, east of i-25, we are dry and we will see a mixture of sun and clouds, wind and cold temperatures. the winter weather advisory goes until 5 am on tuesday. an additional 3 to 7 inches of snow will fall along the continental divide. another 2to 4 inches in

andrew swanson, 9 news. millions of kids around the world will get a christmas gift this year thanks to operation christmas child. denver is helping the charity prepare about 45,000 shoeboxes so each shoebox is filled with school supplies, toiletries and toys. the boxes are donated to children overseas who are living in poverty or have survived natural disasters. war, tear, famine, disease. operation christmas child hopes to collect enough shoeboxes for 12 million kids this year. the event is taking place right now with the denver processing center in aurora. the boxes will be processed today and will be sent to kids in mexico. well, it's not about winning, it's about the love of the game, right? for this team, it's also about
