"a little higher!" that's exactly what participating high schoolers did today at umc's annual "you drink you drive you lose" event. nicci holman, 12th grade - this is really interactive so being able to do these activities - it really allows you to feel what its like "now put these on" students put on special goggles that simulated the damaging effects of alcohol... nicci holman: it was hard. you think oh glasses- no big deal but then you get

completely different - the whole depth is skeweed. its hard. way harder than youd expect. and if that wasn't hands on enough - the students witnessed a roll over simulation demonstrating the worst that can happen when you drink and drive. capt. richard birt: what i was describing was what we usually see on scene -the tragedy, the blood, we usually see death. according to national statistics - almost 30 people in the u.s. die in car crashes involving an alcohol impaired driver every day. and with the holiday season underway captain birt has this message for the public across the spectrum - teens to adults - lets enjoy the holiday season and not get in the car intoxicated according to the latest stats from umc - 27 people brought to umc have died in traffic accidents in clark county between january and december. 400 others were taken to umc with injuries. live near the 95 and horizon- abby theodros fox5

police had to shut down a normally busy section of m-l-k today after a serious two vehicle crash. it happened at m- l-k at gowan around 3:30 this morning. as youc an see in this video from the scene .. the impact sent the vehicles spinning in different directions.. throwing debris all over the roads. north las vegas police say the driver of the white car was not wearing a seatbelt... and was thrown from the car. paramedics took this person to umc in critical condition. officers believe the driver of the blue car was at fault... and was taken into custody. a former convenience store clerk has been sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison - for shooting a man accused of trying to steal a case of beer. mariano tejeda- zuniga was sentenced thursday after he was found guilty at trial in october of battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen gun. he was acquitted by the jury of attempted murder. the defense claimed the gun fired by accident - when the bullet was put in the chamber. a friend drove the accused beer thief - kallum smith - to

he survived with a wound that struck behind his ear and exited his face. school officials evacuated students at ed von tobel middle school this morning for a couple hours. according to southwest gas .. there was a gas odor at the school and the students were removed as a precaution. workers searched the school and could not find any gas leak and the students were allowed to return. there are many ways you can help local children have a happy holiday. this is the office of clark county school district's title one hope program. these workers are collecting thousands of stockings for children.. and registering families to receive them tin the weeks to come. sue goldman title i hope "it means that somebody cares, i think that is the most overwhelming reaction is that kids tell us these people don't know me and yet they bought me a gift or they brought me something or they gave me a gift card and i think that feeling that there's somebody out there who cars is the most important thing we get out of this." the group usually puts together around 35-hundred stockings. another way to help this season .. is by donating to the toy drive! we are one week

it's going to be another busy weekend in the valley. this includes the celebration this weekend - to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the downtown container park. currently .. container park has 38 spaces available to businesses.. if you haven't been there .. each business is inside an old - refurbished shipping container. right now, 32 businesses are open, with 14 of those being there since the beginning.

high surf is slamming southern california. these huge waves even damaged the ventura pier.. aerial video of the pier show some wooden posts have broken loose. officials closed the pier out of safety concerns. the high surf is expected to fuel big waves across beaches in the region through tomorrow. more bad news for daily fantasy sports sites, draft-kings and fan-duel. a judge in new york state has ordered both companies out of the state! the two sites had asked a judge to block the state attorney general's order to shut down the games for new york players. but the judge ruled the opposite way.. issuing a cease and desist order to both companies. nevada officials have also blocked both companies from operating within the state. the republican party getting some push back from one of its top candidates. doctor ben carson unhappy with g-o-p leadership, and he's letting everyone know

correspondent leland vittert has the story from washington. republican presidential candidate ben carson criticizing his own party. the retired neurosurgeon voicing concerns over reports of a private meeting of g-o-p leaders earlier this week. they're said to have discussed the possibility of a "brokered convention" if a clear primary season winner does not emerge before the party's national gathering come july. carson releasing a statement saying, que, "if this was the beginning of a plan to subvert the will of the voters and replace it with the will of the political elite, i assure you donald trump will not be the only one leaving the party." the candidate later responded to questions about those words... carson says: ".. i have no intention of running as an independent, but i certainly don't want to be a part of corruption." trump facing of course is facing criticism for his recent comments on banning muslims from entering the united states, but, the remarks may not be hurting him with g-o-p voters. in a new poll, 57-

responders say they are against the idea, while 25- percent say they support it. much different numbers, however, when focusing on republican primary voters - 39-percent oppose a ban, and 38-percent favor it. kucinich says: "..gop voters like that he's decisive, they like that he talks very tough in a period where a lot them are very afraid of what's going on in terms of terrorism." trump's comments have been blasted by both republican and democratic candidates. the white house also weighing in, saying the idea is simply an attempt to capitalize on americans' fears. in washington, leland vittert, fox news. ohio governor john kasich is the latest g-o-p candidate to announce a las vegas campaign appearance during "debate week". it will be his first official campaign event in nevada. this is video from his rally in new hampshire today. he'll be meeting with voters over coffee at 11:15 on tuesday at tipsy coffee house near sunset and fort apache.

developments in the san bernardino shooting. dive teams are still searching a lake that officials believe the shooters may have visited at some point. searchers spent a few more hours at the lake this morning .. the same one they searched yesterday. teh lake is in a pa just a few miles from san bernardino's inland regional center, where 14 people-were killed last week. sayed farook and his wife tashfeen malik were both killed in a shoot- out with police after the attack. today, the house passed a short- term spending bill to keep the government open for five more days - now on its way to the president's desk for his signature. the deal is called a 'continuing resolution'. it buys congress time to pass a year-long package. before this vote, money for the federal government was set to run out at midnight. democrats are blasting republicans saying they're trying to tie in too many other topics. republicans want

export ban and roll back some obama administration regulations. rep. harold rogers / (r-ky) appropriations committee chair "it's unfortunately necessary we have a little more time to complete our negotiations." rep. nita lowey / (d-ny) appropriations committee ranking member "republicans insistence on including dangerous harmful policies in spending bills has halted progress." the white house says the president will not keep extending the deadline and expects congress to act. u-p-s is getting slammed with holiday deliveries.. more than normal and more than it was planning for. its on-time delivery rate for ground packages fell six percent last week, compared to the same time last year. fedex numbers were also down. an increase in online sales that started around thanksgiving, is likely fueling the slowdown. extra pick-ups and low staff aren't helping. u-p-s, fedex and the u-s postal service are expected to ship more than one- point-5-billion packages this month. an increase of more than 10 percent over last year.
