strip.... now we are learning more about the woman police say was behind the wheel. staying safe on the strip. why city leaders say despite improvements on the popular stretch of las vegas boulevard-- protecting everyone is impossible.... this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. a 24-year-old woman from oregon is facing several charges... including murder with a deadly weapon after police say she crashed her car into crowds of people on las vegas boulevard. i'm christine maddela. i'm elizabeth watts in for john tonight. this is lakeisha holloway... last night-- police tell us she plowed her car onto the sidewalk in front of paris and planet hollywood... with her 3-year- old daughter inside. more than 24 hours later.... the las vegas strip is a very different scene. investigators tell us holloway drove her

sidewalk not once - but twice before driving off. one person died... and nearly forty were hurt. holloway finally stopped about a mile away at the tuscany... with a flat tire. and asked an employee to call police. ""she parked at that location exited her vehicle left her toddler within the vehicle and contacted the valet parker and advised that she had ran over some individuals on las vegas boulevard and requested the valet parker to call 911." " holloway told police she was just trying to get some rest...inside her car in a parking garage.... but she was kicked out. the child is safe with protective services. police are still trying to figure out why holloway drove up onto the sidewalk. at a press conference earlier today the sheriff said... he does not believe it was an act of terror but they aren't completely ruling it out... because they don't have much information on

martinez-valle is live with what we do know about the driver at this point. no exact reason has been given as to why holloway may have driven off the road and onto the sidewalk hitting dozens of people in the process.. a police report shows she wouldnt explain why she ended up on the sidewalk, but she does remember a body bouncing off her windshield... she told police she had been going through a stressfull time during the day, tyring to sleep with her daughter but being continuously woken up... police believe she was homless in las vegas... but looking into her past, it seems she's been homeless before.. " five years ago my biography sounded a lot different than it does today, boy have i come a long way." from a celebrated role model to facing multiple charges for hitting almost 40 people on the las vegas strip. police are having a hard time explaining how and why 24- year-

up plowing through the sidewalks of las vegas sunday evening... " the intentional act that occured on the boulevard is going to be very hard for us to explain at face value." theyre not calling this an act of terrorism, but they are saying it seemed like the crash was on purpose... authorities say she was driving with a suspened lisence at the time of the crash... " the suspect, lakeisha holloway, repeatedly drove her car over pedestrians, some jumped on her car and ran up to the window and banged on it trying to get her to stop, but she didn't." holloway, who changed her name to paris paradise morton in october had only been in las vegas for about a week, she came from portland oregon and police believe she may have been on her way to see the father of her three-year-old child in texas... " we believe that she was attempting to make her way that direction via las vegas." holloway was homless while in vegas and living out of her car with her daughter... she told investigators she had been parking at different buildings where she would sleep in her car until being kicked out by parking attendants... this was not the first time holloway had

and on my own taught me how to stand on my own two feet, not only did i manage to beat working dead end jobs that i had seen my mother struggle with, but i managed to land a federal job at 21, now that is what i call living the grand life." three years ago holloway was awarded by a non profit in portland for overcoming homelessness, graduating from highschool, and going to college, she even landed a government job with the u.s. forest service... now, shes in a las vegas jail after hitting 36 people and leaving one dead... she faces charges like murder with a deadly weapon and child abuse or neglect. police are saying hollaway wasnt under the influence of alcohol and theyre still waiting on blood tests to see if drugs were involved... ... live, miguel martinez-valle, fox5 news local las vegas... holloway could be in court as early as tomorrow for her multiple charges as we mentioned.... one woman was killed in the crash....

year old jessica valenzuela... she is from buckeye arizona.... valenzuela leaves behind a husband and three daughters... her younger brother says she was a stay at home mom... and she and her husband were in las vegas celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary. "she was just a wonderful a mother, a good mother, a good sister agood wife. just an all around good person. bubbly personality " the family set up a go-fund me page... in an effort to bring jessica home to arizona and to cover funeral expenses. so far they raised more than 21 thousand dollars.... we have a link to the site on fox5 vegas dot com. click on the links tab. one of the other victims in the crash.... a wrestler from pacific university near portland.... says it happened so fast "it look 100 percent like it was intentional. like there was no way it was an accident. we saw her speed up and after i realized i was hit, i saw her

christian guerra... says the car hit him.... and he was pinned up against a light post. he fortunately only has bumps and bruises. three other wrestlers were among the injured... pacific university issued this statement which reads in part.... the safety and well-being of our students and employees, both those injured and all who witnessed this traumatic incident, are of paramount importance. we are relieved that none of our students suffered life threatening injuries, but at the same time, saddened to hear of those who were killed or critically injured. we are very thankful to all of the first responders, and to our athletic trainer, who worked tirelessly to treat both the injured and those emotionally shaken by what they witnessed. metro is still investigating and is asking any other witnesses to come foward. if you saw the crash or have any information that can help, and haven't yet talked to police, call metro's homicide section right away at 702-828-3521.

homicide at l-v-m- p-d dot com. with an incident like this on the heavily trafficked las vegas strip.. some wonder if barriers could help prevent tragedies like this in the future... and people are on both sides of the fence when it comes to this issue.. a day after a car plowed into tourists on the las vegas strip... some tourists and residents saying the resort corridor needs barriers to protect people on the sidewalk. there should be barriers it's crazy walking thru here you pretty much get pushed out of the way its very scary standing at the lights i feel very nervous today but others say... this tragedy has happened once in ten years... and barriers aren't necessary.. i would prefer not to be any barriers, its easier when its open youre free to go where you need to go i think anything can happen anywhere any time .. i think we just need to enjoy our life. sheriff joe lombardo said they work with the county and constantly reivew the public safety and traffic issues on the strip.. in the past two and a half years.. public works has widened sidewalks.. moved news racks.. and created new pedestrian bridges to help traffic flow and

safe. we have installed well over 4000 linear feet of fencing but it's not enough, you've got 5 miles on two sides of the street. there's a lot that's been done but there's a lot left to do clark county commissioner steve sisolak says cars and people are on the same level no matter what on the strip... and sadly it's nearly impossible to prevent something like this- when a criminal has their mind set.. when you have a person that wants to use a 6000 pound lethal weapon to wreak havoc there's not much you can do to prevent that from happening he's just thankful we have such great first responders.. that were able to quickly help the victims get the best care they could recieve. the county has done many pedestrian studies.... and will continue to improve areas on las vegas boulevard.. starting with the most urgent needs... and they'll continue to address any pressing issues as pop up. one organization is dedicated to helping witnesses cope with tragedy.... and process what they have just seen.

intervention program specialists say everyone deals differently. "we might not have known that person personally, but either knowing of that person or even standing next to that person and seeing that happen to them, if you're present on scene, you think "that could have happened to me (55)." if that were 10 seconds sooner that could have been me, if that were 10 seconds later that could have been me " volunteers met with people at the crash scene last night....to offer support. volunteers are trained to read body and verbal cues to figure out what individuals need. a tragic event like this on the strip.... has many thinking ahead-- two weeks- to when las vegas boulevard will be packed with people--ready to ring in 2016. police say safety is a top priority. we're doing everything we can to ensure everybody's safety. that was an ongoing process and everyone knows that's something we do here every year. its a year long process and it has been ramped up in recent months in light of what's being taken place across the united

world. security will be stepped up on the strip... more than 100 nevada national guard members will join police in protecting the area. we are learning more about the man accused of shooting a metro police officer last week. teag fox was arrested after a more than six hour manhunt.... police say when officer gregory sedminik arrived to a domestic disturbance call at the emerald suites... on las vegas boulevard and pebble teag-- confronted him... asking him why he was there... and if the officer was there to kill him. fox then told the officer to look up - and fired three rounds in his direction. officer sedminik was hit in the upper left arm... passed into into the left side of his chest and one of his ribs.... before exiting out his back and into his bullet proof vest. fox was later arrested in southern highlands. the officer is expected to make a full recovery. a man is critically injured... after being hit by a car tonight... it happened just

aztec and desert inn. police say the man was on the sidewalk-- when he saw another accident. he stepped off the curb to get a better look-- and was hit. the man was taken to sunrise hospital... police say the driver is cooperating. the east bound lanes of desert inn are now open...... a suspected drunk driver hits and kills a pedestrian... then takes off after the crash. "the dui and fatality are mimicking, one and the same. the full extent of the law will be... that individual will be prosecuted for that. " police say the 25- year-old woman was walking near jones and patrick... when the driver of a mercedes benz slammed into her. the victim died at the scene. officers were able to track down the driver at a grocery store. he's been identified as gaston martinez. police say the pedestrian was not inside the marked crosswalk. state officials say they cannot conduct background checks for lyft and uber drivers... saying they don't have authority to force drivers to participate in

las vegas. the food and drug administration has lifted a lifetime ban on blood donations from gay and bi-sexual men. new restrictions will-- however limit who can make a donation. the f-d-a will replace the blanket ban with a new policy barring donations from men who have had sex with a man in the previous year. gay rights activists said the new policy is a "step in the right direction." the lifetime ban was put in place during the early years of the aids crisis and was intended to protect the blood supply from what was a then little- understood disease. the c-e-o of "the center" - which serves members of the l-g-b-t community - reacted to the news: "to ask that those who have not had sex with their partners or with other men over a twelve month period of time is still very extreme, but i also understand how

post offices around the valley were bustling on one of the busiest delivery days of the year. the united state postal service plans to deliver more than 30- million packages around this time. more than 200- thousand will be in southern nevada alone. u-p-s is prepared for the rush. they've increased transportation... added new package sorting equipment... and developed more efficient routes... all to make sure deliveries are at your doorstep before christmas. "this is our season. were prepared for it and ready. were excited about delivering packages and love to loved one of customers." the postal service says packages shipped by wednesday with priority mail express service should make it by christmas eve... but it will cost you a little more. a family who lost everything in a house fire last year will now have gifts to open on christmas. firefighters from several departments across the valley came together to

all of their belongings were destroyed in a house fire just a few weeks before christmas last year. firefighters took the family of six shopping for basic items like foods and clothes... but the presents were a surprise! santa and "sparky" the fire dog loaded them up on the fire truck to personally deliver them to the family. 10. local. las vegas. behind bars.... without bond. facing murder with a deadly weapon... and likely much more.... we now know the identity of the person behind the wheel of a car that plowed through a crowd on las vegas boulevard. police say 24- year-old lakeisha holloway-- intentionally drove up on the sidewalk on the strip two separate times.. hitting nearly 40 people.... and killing an arizona woman. holloway was taken into custody a mile down the road. police say she pulled into the parking lot at the tuscany casino... got out-- told the valet she had hit people... and asked them to call police. her three year old daughter in her car then entire time. "we intend to file charges immediately. we are going to start off with filing one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon. we will also be filing additional charges as the information flows to our office

way to see her 3- year-old daughters father who is believed to live in dallas texas... police mentioned she had a soughering relationship with him. this massive crash wasnt her only traffic related violation, police say she was driving with a suspended license at the time of the incident and newsweek reported she was cited in oregon for driving uninsured and without a lisence in 2011... police say holloway was living in her car with her daughter while in vegas, she described to police being repeatedly kicked out of parking garages where she was trying to sleep. family members of holloway believe lack of sleep seems like a more possile reason for the crash, they also say shes being misrepresented... " but shes never been homeless shes never been without, our family is veyr big and very supportive of eachother in many cases, and just to attest to the night, shes exhausted shes not this villain that theyre creating her to be, not at all, not at all."

after the car. im crying my friends crying too and my husbands trying to go to the car because he wants to catch them marina: its horrible people everywhere on the stretch of sidewalk in front of paris and planet hollywood--a memorial has been set up in honor of jessica valenzuela and all the other hurt last night. we do have an update on the victims of the crash. they say about 35 people were injured. of the 15 people who were taken to university medical center... three are still in critical ... two are in serious condition. everyone else was treated and released. three patients were taken to spring valley hospital with minor inuries. they have also been released. and sunrise hospital took in 13 patients. five are still there. four of them are in fair. one is in good condition. bail is denied for the man accused of supplying the weapons for the san bernardino shooters... enrique marquez... appearing in court today....

plea. the 24-year-old-- a friend and neighbor of syed rizwan farook, has been charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorism--- among other things. investigators say he bought two semi-automatic rifles for terror attacks that did not take place. he later gave the weapons to farook and farook's wife, tashfeen malik. marquez told investigators he did not know about the plans for that attack. his next hearing is scheduled for january 4th. a new trial date has been set for baltimore officer william porter. porter is one of six officers facing charges in the death of freddie gray. last week-- his first trial ended with a hung jury and mistrial. his new trial is set to start on june 13th.... a court spokeswoman says the new date has to be approved at a hearing tomorrow. freddie gray suffered a fatal spinal injury while riding in a police van after his arrest last april. and then there were twelve.... south carolina

and helix electric you may have heard of little bailey stevens... each year her family hosts a rodeo event to give back to the hospital that saved her life 5 years ago. but what many don't know is bailey and her family are facing a new hurdle... causing heartache and stress once again. so the fox5 surprise squad traveled to pahrump to learn more from someone very close. . music carla: my grandaughter, bailey, was born july 8th of 2010. when she was about 4 days old she developed an infection. they removed about 70% of her small intestine. and the doctor basically told my daughter and son in law that she wouldn't survive. that they should go in and kiss her goodbye

surgery. it was a long long night, but um, bailey survived. music carla: when they were still at the hospital, patrick told marla, "you need to have faith, and belive she's gonna be ok." that became the motto for the barrel race that they put on every year in september at the south point aquestrian center. all the proceeds that come from this event go to the spring valley hosptial nicu unit. and they've given them over $50,000 so far. we all live in pahrump, and so we have this way of life that we live with the horses. and its good for bailey, mentally and physically, but they're expensive to keep. patrick works out at the test sight, and my daughter is a police officer with metro. the medical bills are still coming, and they are going to continue to come, now with these new issues with bailey, they're gonna be big. but um, like i said, marla and patrick find strength in each other, and they will, they'll get through it. music monica: so the family is here and they think they are here to watch the show. they have no idea, they are the stars of the show. christine: this is a surprise so big,
