couple miles from where im standing now. police say the hiker was near oak creek canyon and took a fall that turned deadly. red rock canyon became the scene of a day-long investigation after police say a hiker fell at least 80 feet and later died. it happened just before noon near oak creek canyon. the hiker - initially surviving the fall. stand up: "police say the hiker sustained the serious injuries after falling near a canyon like this one but died before metro's search and rescue unit could arrive." 10 it's unclear what caused the fall - but police say high wind conditions effected their response time. wind gusts were around 28 miles per hour. long time climber dwain porter says when the winds kick up - there's no telling what could happen. dwain porter, long-time climber: sometimes the winds could be so gusty like today that you're just walking along the edge of a rock and it almost knocked you over just from a surprise gust so i almost lost my footing a couple of times today in these high winds. 13

say inclement weather can effect hikers of all levels... along with the condition of the trail's steepness and physical condition. an off-duty police officer and her husband accidentally shot a family member. it happened around 11-30 on christmas night at a home near ann and simmons. north las vegas police say the female officer was sleeping when a relative came inside the home. she was not expecting anyone else to be there. police say the the officer and her husband fired shots at the family member. that person was taken to the hospital... and expected to survive. a husband shot and killed by his wife in their plaza hotel room on christmas eve has been identified. the coroner says 45-year-old david cordova of north las vegas died from a gunshot wound to the chest. his death has been ruled a murder. police say he was arguing with his wife 34-year-old maria escalante when she shot him several times. she was arrested thursday night. jail records show

pending an initial court appearance for murder... child abuse... and endangerment charges. the strong winds returning this weekend. parts of the valley were hit with gusts between thirty to forty miles per hour. it's expected to last into the night. and las vegas fire and rescue say strong winds were to blame for a house fire early this morning. hot ashes from a backyard fire pit landed on a neighbor's home near lake mead and jones. the flames spread up to the roof. fire officials say a neighbor tried to put it out with a garden hose. firefighters had in a few minutes. no one was hurt. treated for minor smoke inhalation. the american red cross is helping out two people with basic needs like shelters... clothes. there were ten thousand dollars in damages -- mostly to the exterior of the home and attic. a family member outdoor fire pit was used in a party late friday night. they thought it before going to bed. and rescue says outdoor fire pits

because you use charcoal or wood for them. tim syzmanski says to always soak them in water when you're done. the ashes can retain heat for several hours to more than a day... and cause another fire. "another thing if youre using a fireplace or wood burning stove put them in bucket. and soak them in water before you put them in the trash. dont throw them on ground. it will set them on fire and neighbors home on fire. if you put on trash, it will put trash can on fire so you really need to let them soak before you discard them." las vegas fire and rescue also want to remind everyone with new year's eve coming up -- you can not use fireworks. syzmanksi says it's illegal during the holiday season. the "white christmas" snow may have left las vegas... but the cold and wind is still here... les is here tonight with a first look at weather and all the winds we've been talking about.

it's a busy weekend at mount charleston after las vegas received a "white christmas". lee canyon received six inches of fresh powder overnight. the ski and snowboard resort also sold out "snow kids packages" and tubing today. park officials say there will be lots of traffic through sunday... and it could carry into the new year. they remind everyone to have patience... and watch for kids running in the road. once the park gets too full -- officials will set up checkpoints... and you'll only be able to get in when people exit the park. christmas is officially over... and some are already starting to take down the tree and decorations. a christmas tree recycling drive is underway. u-n-l-v and springs preserve are heading the program. there are more than thirty drop- off locations throughout the valley... like parks and neighborhood lowe's stores. most of the locations are open 24-seven.

some roads impassable. rescue crews helping residents trapped in their homes. the national weather service said a potential tornado touched down in birmingham causing damage to several blocks. (charles gordon, birmingham fire chief) "the damage that was done was confined to approximately one square mile. we have three structures, three houses that collapsed. we transported one patient from the scene, there were two others that were removed from the structure but reported no injuries." alabama's governor declared a state of emergency because of widespread flooding. at least 117 homes overcome by water. in georgia, the rain damaged roads and made driving treacherous. (nats -- rain) and in mississippi, flood warnings and relentless rain add more misery to areas already devastated by tornados that killed at least 8- people in the state. many roads are flooded and some people are dealing with rising water in their homes.

victor and tameka hale watched as their home of ten years was overtaken by water. (tameka hale/ homeowner) "the refrigerator, the lawn mower, the trailer, it just floated away, garbage can, everything gone." (tameka hale/ homeowner) "it's discouraging. we lost everything. my child...he didn't get none of his christmas items". and a brush fire in california causes mandatory evacuations this weekend. here's a look at solimar beach near ventura. flames burned more than 12- hundred acres -- shutting down parts of two southern california highways. more than seven- hundred firefighters were called out. mandatory evacuations were in place for solimar beach and a voluntary evacuation notice for neighboring areas. while most of the country braves the cold and snow... it's feeling more like spring in new york. temperatures have been reaching the sixties and

this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. a hiker is killed after falling at red rock canyon. metro police have been investigating the scene all day. fox five's abby theodros joins us from close to red rock at charleston and 215 with more on what happened. it all happened a couple miles from where im standing now. police say the hiker was near oak creek canyon and took a fall that turned deadly. police say group had developed some sort of a rope system to come back dowm the canyon and failed. thats when he 80 ft - suffering blunt force trauma.
