john huck. christine maddela. and weather 24/7 with chief meteoroligist ted pretty. this is fox5 news at 5:30. local las vegas. thanks for joining us for your only local news at 5:30. i'm elizabeth watts. let's get you up to date with the latest local headlines. in just a few days las vegas will be papaed with hundreds of thousands of people for new years eve. fox5's abby theodros joins us live from the strip with a look at how officials are preparing for the big night. america's party is just a few short days away and metro police says theyre prepared for e big celebration at a news conference today sheriff joe lombardo said his entire department will be on duty. that means just under a thousand uniformed officers will be working the strip, 300 in downtown las vegas, and an additional group of plain clothes officers spread through out town. one new request from metro police:

dont bring bulky items with you that could conceal "items of harm" mayor carolyn mayor carolyn goodman: "we're wide open on the strip. very difficult to monitor that huge open area i mean from hotel to hotel - i know the strip will be closed as we get to new years eve specifically but the sheriff's been asking 'everybody please come with bare minimum of belongings with you." metro's request comes at a time amid threats of terrorism. sheriff lombardo said earlier today that reports of threats have increased by 300 percent in the last couple of months. rtc of southern nevada will also be providing free rides from 6 p.m. on new years even to 9 in the morning then next day. and those buses will circulate to and from the strip and downtown. earlier today we spoke with the las vegas convention and visitors authoriy .. it expects 98- point-5 of all local hotel rooms to be full new year's night. they expect around 332- thousand people will be in town for the party.. and expect them to spend more

dollars.. almost 5-percent more than last year. a violent crash killed a woman just before daybreak this morning. from our traffic cameras you can see the emergency responder activity around the scene. according to the nevada highway patrol .. a woman was driving an suv north on the 15 when she lost control and rolled down the rocky embankment onto the ramp between the 215 and las vegas boulevard. she was not wearing a seatbelt .. was ejected and died at the scene. no word yet on if she was impared or something else led to her losing control. a fire leaves an old motel charred and the fire department believes its possible homeless people may have accidentally caused it. fox 5's ophelia young is at 3rd and imperial where the motel sits and ophelia - this is not the first time the motel has caught fire. las vegas fire and rescue responded to this same motel a year and a half ago. this is video of a fire that started summer of last year - they say it was caused by squatters - or

seeking shelter usually from the weather. flames could spread from smoking, cooking or building a fire to keep themselves warm. fire investigators believe the blaze that started today around 10:30 originated in the stairwell. though there was also reportings that those living here also included workers renovating the building - firemen also found evidence of squatting. "theres usually trash mattresses shopping carts things of that nature its just a place they go to hang out and theyre trying to get out of the elements." business owners in the area say they see homeless people in and out of the shuttered motel all the time. this business owner saying they vandalize her building all the time she hopes this fire disperses them and brings attention to the homeless problem in the area. meanwhile this building has sat abandoned for at least a year - now that it is charred i tried calling the owners to see what will be done with it. they haven't called back. reporting live ophelia young.

china is changing one of its most controversial policies that has stood for decades. lawmakers voted yesterday to end the one-child policy, and allow couples to have two children. the reason is china's aging population. the government says in just 15 years, china will be home to more than 400 million people over the age of 60 -- and there are concerns there won't be enough young people to support them. many of us reach for a diet soda to help watch our weight. but new research shows we might not be saving as many calories as we think. the "journal of the academy of nutrition and dietetics" .. found people who drank a lot of diet drinks tended to eat more and load up on high-calorie foods like chips, cookies and ice cream. the researchers looked at the food and drink consumption of more than 22- thousand adults for two-days. the researchers say those wanting

lemon of the harlem globetrotters has died. basketball game noise the "clown prince" of basketball entertained fans around the world with his skills and humor on and off the court. lemon was inducted into both the naismith basketball hall of

clown hall of fame during his lifetime. lemon played for the globetrotters during the team's heyday -- from the mid fifties to the late seventies. after twenty- four years with the team, lemon started his own team in 19-79 called the bucketeers. lemon eventually put away his basketball sneakers and became a minister in 19-86. he was eighty- three years old. dozens are dead in several states after a string of severe weather. dangerous conditions are not letting up... with the storm system causing major problems for airlines, forcing more than 4-thousand flights to be canceled or delayed. foxs will carr is in a hard-hit area of texas with the story. officials in mississippi evaluating the damage caused by last week's severe weather. residents there dealing with the aftermath of the storm system, which killed nearly a dozen people. the state's governor asking for help from a fema assessment team. bryant says: "..their responsibility will

eight percent from a year ago. according to a report released today, americans spent more on items like furniture this year. online shopping had the biggest spike .. up by 20 percent. but shopping at physical stores still accounts for the majority of holiday spending. sales of women's clothing rose double-digits, while men's apparel declined, according to the mastercard spendingpulse report. the report is based on sales activity on the mastercard payments network. 'star wars the force awakens' wasted no time breaking box office records when it opened this month.
