this week. fox five's abby theodros shows us how metro police are tightening up security for the celebration. it's "americas party" and las vegas is the place to be. lindsay somerstein, visiting from miami: we came here specifically for new years we heard it was a lot of fun so we wanted to see what it was like. with the crowd expected to top 300-thousand - county officials are taking extra steps to make sure the party is as safe as it is fun. larry brown, vice chairman of clark county commission: when people are making the decision as far as a destination like las vegas, the first question they ask now is "how safe is your community?" and we will go above and beyond this year. that means just under a thousand uniformed officers will be working the strip, 300 in downtown las vegas, and an additional group of plain clothes officers spread through out town. metro is also taking a page from the fremont street experience hand book - asking the public... not to bring large items onto the strip. lombardo: we're putting a request out on las vegas blvd. to prevent indiviuals from showing up with backpacks, bags,

items that one could use to conceal items of harm unlike the fremont experience however - it's not an ordiance. just a request. nevertheless mayor carolyn goodwin says more than the preparations in place- the public is their best asset. we're the boots on the ground, we something that looks unusual we see someone acting out. we need to take responsibilty and we can't just turn out head and figure its someones job. christian molander-barraza it was just a lot of craziness going on all over the place but very beautiful. so many bright lights. the fire works were amazing. it's a great experience for people to come out here and see something different. at f5n llv metro police urge everyone to "see something... say something". in the last few months -- they've had a 300-percent increase in reports of suspicious activity. and there are plenty of options for those who drink too much this new year's eve. r-t-c will offer free rides to and from the strip and downtown las vegas. it runs from six p-m until nine in the morning the next day. a motorcycle towing company

fence about who they're going to support -- they want to come to these events to see what the candidate has to say and then make their decision when the time comes to vote but tonight everyone i spoke to knew that senator sanders was the candidate they were voting for. tonight this high school gymnasium was packed -- there were a couple thousand standing in front of the media stage and then to the side and even behind us there were several hundred. today senator sanders talked about raising the minimum wage to 15 dollar, taxing the wealthy, free college tuition, single-payer healthcare and overhauling the criminal justice system. one of the main things he talked about was the monetary influence in government. he wants to get rid of the culture of money in politics and he says he's proud that his campaign has raised millions of dollars from small-money donations as opposed to lump sums from billionaires. bernie sanders: "wall street in

and the koch brothers and sheldon adleson and all these really won't be guys, they are so powerful in controlling the economic and political life of this country, that we cannot defeat them unless millions of people stand together and that's what this campaign is about." mark stevens, voter: "i wanted to come out to see and support bernie sanders. i think there's too much money and politics and he's actually the one candidate that i've heard that wants to get the money out of politics." sanders also attended a private event at a the home of former democratic congressional candidate erin bilbray. he gave a short speech to about 100 guests at the women's leaders luncheon. after that he met with local veterans at another event. this is a high school so there were a lot of young people in the crowd. coming up at 11 i'll tell you why senator sanders is appealing to first-time voters. for now -- reporting live-- rachel moore -- fox five news. local las vegas. this morning -- fox

bernie sanders for a one-on-one interview here at the fox five studio. they discussed foreign policy... the future of solar energy in nevada... and the housing market. talk to me about foriegn policy, there's a lot of attention on isis, ever since san bernardino, and people are thinking about their own insecurities, how would you make american's safe? two things that we have to do, number 1 in my view we have to crush and destroy isis. but we have to be smart, know. i learned a lesson about iraq. i voted against the war in iraq and i think history will recall that as the right vote. how do we destroy isis? we destroy isis through a broad coalition, which means that muslim troops and i am happy to see the iraqi army maybe they are getting their act together, and working in coalition, with the support of the united states, uk, france and germany, and russia by the way, focusing on
10:10 pm
isis. in terms of protecting the american people, we have got to do everything that we can, i can make sure intelligance around the world, that in fact, we have a very strong process by which we're vetting people who are coming into the united states, and by which information that is to the proper authorities. and i some of the things to do . "senator, last week there was a decision here by the public utilities commission, giving nv energy the ability to charge solar customers more, while giving them less money for the power they returned, and a lot of people say that's going to kill the solar here in nevada, they feel they've been kicked in the gut by the government, that tells them to go green, and yet the utility-- monopoly here is making economically "that decision was made by the state officials. i am not an expert on what goes on here in nevada but it sounds to me, like a very bad and counter-productive decision. look,
10:11 pm
this is my view , i believe along with vertually all the scientists climate change is real, it is caused by human activity, it is already causing massive problems in our country, and around the world. we have a short window of opportunity, to get our act together and transfer our energy system away from fossil fuels into energy efficiency, sustainable energy, so we should be moving aggressively into solar, helping people get solar on their rooftops, not discouraging that. my view is that we transform our energy system and we create a planet which is habitable for our kids and our grandchildren. not do the other thing. now by the way, we are seeing a lot of opposition to transform our energy system coming from the big money interests in oil, and coal, and apparently they are not worried about the future of this planet. they are more worried about their short-termed profits. that's
10:12 pm
be faught. here in nevada, a lot of homeowners are still underwater, how will the president make life a little better? here's what we do, what we say is first of all, in america we need a minimum wage which is a living wage, not a salvation wage. my view would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour over the next several years, number 2, real unemployment in this country is close to 10 percent, youth unemployment is higher than that. we need to create millions of decent paying jobs, rebuilding our crumbling infrastucture. we need pay equitiy for women workers, if we are going to be competitive in this global economy, we need to make sure, that we have the best educated workforce in the world, in my view colleges and universities, are tuition free and paying for that for a tax is wall street speculation so we need to have a trade policy, which tells corporations to invest in our country, not just in china, changing our trade policies. so those are some of
