to talk about security plans for this evening. sheriff joe lombardo said that revelers will notice an increased presence of officers along the las vegas strip and at the fremont street experience in downtown las vegas. as tradition goes, both fremont street experience and the las vegas strip will be affected by closures ahead of tonight's new year's eve celebration. 5 pm is the time for all eastbound off-ramps from i- 15 to close.... including tropicana, flamingo and spring mountain. by 6 p- m all streets, roads and alleys leading onto las vegas boulevard between sahara and mandalay bay will be closed with barricades in place. by 6:15 all vehicles will be cleared off the strip and around 6:30 the strip will be open to pedestrian traffic. tonight, the fireworks will begin at midnight and last for fifteen minutes. 1:30 am is when the barricades will

the street sweeping begins at 2. at about 3:30 am, police will reopen those closed i-15 off-ramps. the sheriff said he's also requesting that people heading down to either bags and home. bag, police will be people to remove those items, and says those who don not will be dealt with individually. lombardo said it's also important for the public to remember the adage - see something, say something. he encouraged anyone who notices suspicious activity to immediately alert law enforcement by calling 311. fox five has your

as we mentioned earlier, security will be stronger than ever tonight - on the strip - as well as everyone is working tonight... from the sheriff on down. police forces are other agencies - and highway patrol to keep people safe - and address any problems. the presence of the national guard has increased this year - following a series of terror

year. the public is asked to report anything suspicious by calling 3-1-1. this morning - on "behind the badge"... metro told fox five about some potential problems - including gunfire. "as always, we're their guns down, don't shot them in the air, no celebratory pop shots as we say " "when i would work patrols on new year's eve, it was amazing the illegal shooting calls we shooting the air, metro is also reminding people you can't fly drones near the strip... that's already illegal - since there is a ban on flying drones within five miles of an airport. the strip celebration is an adults only affair. there's a curfew in effect from six p-m tonight... through 5 a-m tomorrow... everyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. metro will also show zero tolerance for drunk driving tonight... so if you plan to celebrate with alcohol - make sure you have a ride. of course taxi

the town - but for the first time this year... ride- sharing services are available in las vegas. uber will have an "exclusive" designated drop- off point on the strip... at the linq promenade valet - just under the high roller wheel. the spot will be used for pick-ups as well - when you're ready to go home. keep in mind - surge pricing will be in effect - in which prices increase during periods of high demand. rival "lyft" tells us it is capping "surge pricing" at 200 percent tonight. another option is the las vegas monorail. for the first time... the service will be open for 44 straight hours... from seven this morning until 3 a-m on january 2-nd. there are five stations on the strip - between the m-g-m grand and the s-l-s... with additional off- strip stops at the convention center and westgate. locals can buy a one-way ticket for just one-dollar until 11 p-m tonight... with proper i-d.

(fireworks/music)" this is what it looked like a few hours ago... as thailand welcomed 2016. the celebration in bangkok... at the "temple of dawn"... also commemorates the king's 88-th birthday. and - take a look at this celebration in hong kong... a massive fireworks display was seen over victoria harbor - lighting up the skyline of the chinese territory. in dubai... the midnight fireworks went off at the world's tallest building - despite a raging inferno at a hotel nearby. the flames at the "address hotel"

story building. 14 people suffered minor injuries - and one person had a heart attack due to the smoke and overcrowding during the evacuation. no deaths were reported and we still don't know what caused the fire. about 15 minutes before midnight - large explosions could be heard from inside the burning building. the new year's eve show went on as planned - but many people couldn't even see the fireworks through the fire's thick smoke. an early morning apartment fire left 38 people with out a home going into the new year. just after 2 in the morning and tore through a two- story apartment buidling along vegas valley drive near sunrise hospital. it took officials hours to put the investigators have not yet cause of the fire .. who live there blame squatters. robin luff, displaced by fire to be forced to be put in that position. we're trying to just live like normal families then we got to deal with idiots like this that don't pay rent that

we're homeless. and its not fair to us we're struglging already. or we wouldnt be living in a place of this calibur." now the red cross is helping fire victims like robin luff. they tell us they are helping 19 adults and 17 children. luckily, no one was injured. investigators have yet to determine the cause of this fire. a firefighter was hurt battling another fire today. las vegas fire and rescue says it happened at a home on margaret avenue - near bonanza and maryland parkway arnd 11-30 this morning. the firefighter fell of the roof - but was checked out by paramedics - and later returned to work without being taken to the hospital. the fire started in the chimney area and spread to the roof. it's believed the house was being used by squatters. a final report has been released - on an october explosion and fire - at a closed radioactive waste dump in beatty. the state fire marshal confirms previously released information that rainwater seeped into corroded
