professor wrote a paper on the advantages of what he called an extraterrestrial observatory - basically a telescope in orbit." every aspect of hubble's capabilities can be controlled from this state-of- the-art command post at nasa's goddard space flight center in greenbelt, maryland. dunham says: "each console is set up for a different subsystem.... each of them are responsible to make sure all of the data coming down in their area is within certain limits that we're not violating anything that's going to jeopardize the health or safety of hubble." the telescope was delivered into space by the now retired space shuttle discovery... with the original intention of beaming back images for only 15 years. but as the breakthroughs continued - so did nasa's interest in keeping the telescope going. that meant a major overhaul in 2009 to help fight the natural aging process. jeletic says: "with all the redundancy that we have, we're very hopeful that we can keep, get, and make hubble last until at least 2020 and beyond." waldman says (on- cam bridge): "but

obama ended nasa's shuttle program in 2011, repairs would no longer be possible... meaning that it's now just a matter of time before hubble will go extinct." and even after 25 years in orbit - hubble's still making new discoveries... like this new star in the milky way galaxy that's been dubbed the light saber - after the jedi's weapon of choice in the movie franchise "star wars". carpenter says: "we have the star behind a dark cloud and we have two blades od very brilliant gas coming out of the two poles of the star and it looks like someone's got their hand on the hilt of a light saber." in washington, joel waldman, fox news. nasa has also released a photo from the hubble telescope - of a new galaxy forming. the space agency says this shows two galaxies merging into one - after colliding. scientists say the new galaxy will become stable. it's located about 230 million light
