this is fox5 news at 11. local las vegas. tonight we are hearing from the mother of the 23 year old who was shot and killed by police yesterday. i'm christine maddela. john has the night off. the family tells us they feel like theyre being left in the dark. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg spoke with them... she joins us now live from police headquarters... keith childress lives in phoenix and was in las vegas visiting his uncle. he was just 23 years old... his family says keith did have a criminal history but attempted murder is something he is not guilty of. i love him i love him so deeply and i dont understand danielle steagal wants to know what happenned

court. they said he killed him and they said they found out because of the video on tv i still have not been notified by any police officer that my child is deceased she said vince arent on durango i said ya she said my sons dead she said they killed my son i just saw it on the news we went back to the scene of the shooting. childress was shot in this cul- de-sac. when officers fired, some of the bullets hit nearby homes. we counted nineteen bullet holes in this home's front door, the garage and on the side of the home. no one answered when we knocked at the door, but another neighbor heard it all. (neighbor- heard bullets) it was like bam bam bam bam it was a lot and iw as like get on the groundo las vegas metro police say u-s marshals called them to help track a suspect wanted for attempted murder in arizona. two patrol officers began giving commands they believed htye saw a firarm they told him to drop a firearm he did not drop the item that item turned out to be a cell phone. childress was unarmed. "because this was a resdential area they dischared on the suspect hitting him several times he was in las vegas visiting his uncle for new years. the family says childress got in trouble with the

was working as a bounty hunter and tried to arest the wrong person. they tell us childress was charged in the case. kieht was pending charges for a crime relatd to his job fox5 tracked down his criminal record and found he was charged with burglary, armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and theft from that incident. his uncle was with childress when u-s marshalls came looking for him. he looked over his shoulder said some wrods and then took off running i was drawn on told not to move says do you know why your nephew is running? hes wanted for attempted murder out of ariznoa the family tells us police aren't telling them anything... and are refusing to release childress' body... i called the coroner to see if it was true because i couldnt believe it they said they have someone with that birth date when fox5 called the coroner's

releasing the man's name until they notify his family. i want answers i wanna know why my son is not here today his mother says she just wants her son to know one thing... mommys here always mommy loves you so much youre my everything we reached out to the u-s marshalls service... their las vegas, washington d-c, and arizona offices to check on the attempted murder charge... but have not heard back. metro police issued a statement about the shooting, but did not allow the media to ask any questions. reporting live cyndi lundeberg fox 5 news local las vegas. we just spoke with the family who says they just returned from metro police department and

belongings. he leaves behind three young children. the family has also started a gofund me page to help pay for the funeral. one man dead and the suspect on the run, north las vegas police department are investigating the first homicide of the year... fox 5's miguel martinez-valle brings us the details from the newsroom. christine it had only been a few hours into the new year when north las vegas police were called about a gun shot heard fired in a north las vegas neighborhood, when they responded to the call they found a man injured from a gun shot wound... medics later declared him dead... only hours into 2016 and north las vegas police already have a homicide investigation on their hands... " this is really unfortunate, especially being the first day of new years. we were happy we were fairly quiet

is no way to start a new year." a 41 year old man was shot and killed inside a condo in a gated community...the person who shot him, no where to be found. police got word of gun shots around noon, neighbors say the shots were fired earlier... " maybe around 10, 11, around that time frame, i was half asleep and i heard the gun shot. and i kind of peaked out the window i didnt really see anything so i layed back down. and then maybe 2 minutes later i heard a lady crying outside." police say this was not a random act of violence... the shooter and the man killed knew eachother, and they wern't alone at the time of the shooting. " i believe there were a couple of chldren inside, im not sure how many or their ages at this point. but we do know that there were multiple people inside." no one else was hurt by the gunfire, but police spent the greater part of january 1st speaking to the people who

reported that there was some sort of audible altercation right before the shot was fired, so detectives are working to try to determine the relationship between the two." the coroners office is going to release the 41 year old mans name, as far as the suspect, police didnt give us a description of the person they are looking for but they dont have anyone behind bars for the murder as of now... police are asking for help from the community. anyone with information about this shooting can call police or crimestoppers at 7-0-2-3-8-5-55-55. the red cross is continuing to help the families who lost their homes in a devastating apartment fire yesterday. 19 adults and 17 children were displaced in this fire, near maryland parkway and desert inn. the red cross says in situations like this, they have case managers work with individuals, to best determine how to help them. they are given vouchers and money to get whatever they need to get through the next few days. but as the red cross tells us, one of the best things they can provide is comfort after a tragedy. " clark county fire and rescue has not said what started this fire. two people were killed, when their car rolled over on new year's eve and burst into flames. "they were traveling at a high rate of speed, they did travel across all the travel lanes at once, colliding with the center median wall, then back across the travel lanes off into the right shoulder where they overturned. " this happened on i-15 near craig around ten last night. a witness sent us this video of the fire on fox5 report it. nevada highway patrol says the people inside the car were in their mid-20's. the coroner will released their names. and nevada highway patrol

crash on u-s 95 near ann road. troopers say the driver crashed into three cars. several people including the driver were hurt, but those injuries aren't life- threatening. nevada law enforcement start every year with the goal of zero fatalities on our valley roads. they hope drivers will make a commitment to themselves and others to drive safely. nevada highway patrol says they arrested 22 people for d-u-i last night, and responded to three hit and run crashes. they say the number of crashes they deal with is frustrating, since most are preventable. according to the office of traffic safety... 204 people died in 2015 in a car crash. sixty were pedestrians. " tpr. loy hixon: when people understand that when they get behind the wheel that it's a huge responsibility - that it's a responsibility not only for themselves people in the vehicle but also people in the road way - when they realize that they follow the rules of the road they keep themselves safe " the "zero fatalities" campaign encourages everyone to wear a seatbelt.

intersection safety, as well as keeping drunk drivers off the road. we're in a new year, so there's some new laws for our state. nevada legislatures passed fifty bills that took effect today. one law requires day care centers to schedule active playtime for children and limit sedentary activities. another allows voters to get their sample ballots through email. school districts will now set aside money to give teachers performance- based bonuses. lawmakers meet for four months every two years... so we won't see another batch of new laws until 2017. after a year with more than 300 mass shootings... president obama says his new year's resolution is to take steps to end gun violence. the president is pushing to close what's called the "gun show loophole". some firearms dealers can avoid requiring background checks before making the sale. federally licensed gun dealers are required to do a background check on their

sellers are not federally licensed... which means some guns might be purchased without a background check. one dealer we talked to says he doesn't think the new rules will make a difference. " the basic flaw is there's no relation to crime. there is no data that shows guns purchased without a background check are used in crime. in fact, the statistics show virtually all mass shooters, depending on how you define a mass shooter, passed their background checks." president obama's executive action plan is expected to be announced sometime next week. only one baby can earn the title of being the first born in our valley in 2016... or so we thought! meet the two newborns who will have a good ice breaker story for the rest of their lives. remembering a singer who's entertained fans for decades... we'll look at some of natalie cole's most memorable moments.

"nats of fireworks " las vegas started off 2016 with the biggest party around, and a very impressive fireworks show! our fox5 crews were in the thick of it, reporting from the foundation room at mandalay bay, ghostbar at the palms, drai's at the cromwell, and fremont street experience. and much to the relief of partygoers... the wind wasn't bad last night, so the fireworks show went on as planned. plenty of people welcomed the new year at fremont street experience. crews worked overnight to get it cleaned up and ready for the weekend. metro says just two people were arrested during the fremont street experience party. eight were arrested on the

there was some convenient help for those who partied a little too hard last night. people who woke up today with a hangover had a few options for getting back on their feet. over at "reviv medical spa" at the m-g-m... people pay to have fluids put back into their bloodstream. for visitors wanting to enjoy the rest of their las vegas visit, it was a quick and easy option. " "well, long story short, i might have partied last night in front of the monte carlo for new year's eve and i would like to continue partying actually. so i'm just getting a little pick-me-up going." celebrating the start of a new year.... friends, family and fans of natalie cole are grieving the singer's death. fox news correspondent will carr is in los angeles cole with the story. natalie cole spent a

public eye.... at age six she was recording with her father - the legendary nat king cole. by eleven she was on t-v.... but on new year's eve, the award- winning singer died from congestive heart failure. (take pkg) it was a defining song for both natalie cole and her father.... and now "unforgettable" is how she's being remembered after her death thursday night. it happened at cedars-sinai hospital here in l-a according to her family, she died how she lived..... with quote "dignity, strength and honor" cole grew up in los angeles... and often sang with her dad, just for fun. she became serious about singing and recorded her first album in 19-75. instant stardom ensued.... and with it, did drug and alcohol abuse. cole was very public about using heroin and crack cocaine. cole says: "there's

could have done differently in 2008 - cole revealed she had hepatits c, a liver disease she said she got from using intravenous drugs. that same year, cole famously criticized grammy- darling singer amy winehouse--- who had drug problems of her own,. cole says, " i lost five years of my life, my career because of drugs. you don't play like that. and i don't think bad behavior should be rewarded." the jazz singer's health began to decline because the hepatitis c treatment was so taxing on her kidneys, it required a transplant. she continued to perform, but drastically cut back her schedule... natalie cole was 65-years-old. she left behind a

sisters. a billboard in west valley city, utah is turning heads... and having people check their phones to see if the website it advertises, actually exists: "where white people meet-dot- com". even though they say that anyone can sign up for it, what are they trying to hint at, like, they are technically saying it's just for white people." "i just think we should've passed that whole mindset of staying within our own races, segregation pretty much!" the website went up recently, and the creators say they created it as an alternative to other dating websites. it does say everyone is welcome, and no racism will be tolerated. while some people say the website is sending the wrong message... others say there are dating sites for other ethnicities so they don't see a problem with this one. it's the first friday of 2016! and there's still plenty of chances to catch up on new year's and even christmas happenings if you missed them. we'll take a look at what's going on
