watts. thanks for joining us. late this afternoon - the university announced dave rice had resigned after the team opened mountain west play with three straight losses. assistant- todd simon- will take over for the rest of the season on an interim basis. fox 5's kevin bolinger has been traveling with the team all week and hosts the unlv coaches show. he joins us in studio with more on some sweeping changes in the runnin' rebel program. while this is called a resignation - rice was essentially forced out this did not come as a surprise to a lot of people - although many thought rice would continue to coach the rest of the season. the runnin rebels have lost four of their last five games - including the first three of the mountain west season to teams that - quite honestly - they are better than. in all of those losses - unlv had leads late that they blew down the stretch. with pressure mounting from fans and boosters - the decision was made to make a switch now to see if it can spark the team. todd simon was chosen to take over for the rest

the runnin' rebels are back in action for the first game under todd simon on tuesday night at the thomas and mack against new mexico. the powerball is up to one-point- three billion dollars. fox5's abby theodros was at a lottery store in primm today -- where a lucky ticket holder got five out of six numbers. you cant get a lottery ticket here in nevada but people were making the trek across state lines to test their luck today. in fact the line outside the primm valley lottory store was 2 and a half hours. bruno mars - "billionaire" with the powerball up to record numbers- the dream of being a billionaire could become reality wanda: the powerball is up to $1.3 billion dollars and im super excited about it

it's been a deadly weekend on valley roads. eight people have been killed. the most recent happened at 11-30 this morning near carey and losee. police say a male driver was speeding when he lost control of the s-u-v... and it fell twenty feet off a bridge into railroad tracks. the driver and passenger died at the scene. no other cars were involved. "so a good reminder for us to slow down. this is something tragic where we've lost two people. it's the first fatal crash for north las vegas. so a good reminder to slow down. you aren't just affecting your life. you're affecting other people's lives as well." police have not said if alcohol or drugs were a factor. the coroner will release the victims' identities. one was killed after a cadillac rear-ended a moving semi-truck. it happened around two this morning on the i-15 near the turnoff for u-s 93. that's near "love's travel stop".

patrol says the driver of the cadillac died from the crash impact. the semi-truck driver was not hurt. a motorcyclist was killed in a crash. police say it happened at 10-30 this morning on northshore road near lake mead national recreation area. the park service is investigating the crash. no word yet on what caused it. and another deadly crash when two cars collided at an intersection. it happened around eleven saturday night near boulder highway and desert inn. witnesses told police a dodge was making a left turn it was struck by a ford. two elderly people inside the dodge were taken to sunrise hospital. both died from their injuries. the ford driver is from bullhead city, arizona and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. police have not said if alcohol or speed were factors. coming up -- the president's final state of the union happens this week. what white house officials say he'll focus on in his last year of office... and which local veteran will sit with the first lady. republican presidential hopeful donald trump campaigns

"i was in a women's shelter at one time and i was in another family shelter the shade tree. so homelessness i have experienced firsthand." dias is now a resident and volunteer at veterans village. it's a non-profit helping homeless veterans. she still can't believe she's going to be sitting with the first lady. more than $900 million dollars in powerball tickets were sold. while the powerball climbs into the billions... gas prices continue to fall. triple-a says the cost of gas across the country could drop to one dollar a gallon. right now -- the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is a dollar-96. some areas could see a dollar a gallon because of tumbling oil prices and availability. this hasn't happened since 19-99. but here in las vegas -- gas prices are around two- dollars and fifty cents. to international headlines now... now that "el chapo' has been captured... mexican officials are now looking at a "secret meeting" between the drug load and a famous hollywood actor.

us some of the interview. nat pop days after drug kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman was captured by mexican officials -- following his 2nd escape from prison in july-- mexican authorities are now turning their interest to actor sean penn. mexican officials want to question penn over a reported secret meeting with the drug lord. on saturday, rollingstone.com published an article written by penn.. featuring an interview done via video messaging with el chapo. q: how did you get involved in the drug business? a: well from the age of 15 and on, where i'm from which is the municipality of badiraguato, i was raised on a ranch called la tuna. in that area, and up until today, there are no job opportunities. according to the article, penn met guzman in person back in october .. and during the sit- down the drug lord agreed to an interview at a later time. q: do you think it's true you are responsible for the
