we've seen low gas prices across the country... but las vegas seems to be left out. what oil experts say is to blame... plus -- how the las vegas community honored the legacy of doctor martin luther king junior. this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. it was another amazing football weekend filled with hail marys and wild finishes. that means next weekend should be even more fun. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. the sports books say championship weekend will rival super bowl weekend with the intense matchups happening in the n-f-c and a-f-c. fox five's elizabeth watts is live at the westgate super book with more on the excitement at the books... after a crazy year in the n-f-l-- it's all coming down to this... the sports book says sunday will be huge because it's like a two for one with these great matchups.. and bettors are already putting their money where

reporting live ew ffn llv. coming up at ten thirty we'll look at the odds some overcame this year to get to the championship games.. hundreds of stepping foot in las vegas for the start of the convention season. the "shooting hunting and outdoor trade show" or shot show takes place at the las vegas convention center this week. it's the largest of 14 different conventions the city will host. the second largest in town is the "international builders show". las vegas will see more than 250- thousand visitors in just this week alone. mccarran international airport officials expect more crowds with all the shows. roads will also be congested around the area. conventions." "the hotels are busy where i wanted to stay was not available so i had to stay in a different hotel than my colleages were all kind of spread out. oil prices are the been in more than 10 years... with a barrell of oil going at around 29 "usually when gas prices are 30 dollars a barrel, down to a dollar fifty." "and while the be down, were not that reflected, at the pump." " the barrel of oil is lower, so they should give us a break" record breaking low prices are being seen at gas stations across much of the midwest, in michigan one gas station charged just 47 cents a gallon... the national average is around a dollar 89... but las vegas stations are still charging more than 2 dollars. " we should be fair you know everywhere else going down why not here" experts are blaming this on a series of breakdowns at oil refineries in southern california... "thats something that trickles over to las vegas because the areas reliance on those southern california refineries." there's good news though, theyre

live from las vegas. you're watching fox5 news at 10, with emmy award winner john huck. christine maddela. and weather 24/7 with chief meteorologist ted pretty. this is fox5 news at 10. local. las vegas. many will start rolling up their sleeves to donate blood for those in need. it's to kickoff "national blood donor month". united blood services is working with other centers to keep the supply full. organizer say blood transfusions save or sustain around five million lives a year. the blood bank helps those fighting diseases like cancer or leukemia... and for those in traumatic accidents. united blood services asks people to donate blood this month. there will be plenty of drives happening throughout the valley. you can find more information on

"links" section. the american red cross installed smoke alarms as an effort to prevent deaths and injuries from house fires. dozens of volunteers went door to door for a day of service on martin luther king day. one of those neighborhoods in need was maycliff mobile home park. volunteers installed the brand-new smoke alarms for free. the devices should last for ten years... but the red cross says you should always check them twice a year. "this is part of a larger red cross campaign across the nation we're aiming to reduce fatalities and injuries from home fires by 25%." "we're all just trying to do our best to make this community the best, safest place to live." the red cross encourages everyone to give them a call if ever they need help installing smoke alarms. it's been a busy three-day weekend for mount charleston. plenty of desert dwellers made the trip up to see the snow. fox five's les krifaton shows us how it's boosting business for lee canyon.

more snow than all of last season and that alone was enough to drive people by what looks like the thousands up to mount charleston on this holiday. once they manourvered through the traffic and it was busy throughout the day as you can see from this video it was time to have fun. beautiful day beautiful weather crowded but a lot of fun. for the ski resort operator these are the best of times because its been a while since all of their trails have been open.. there have been some trails that have finally opened this season with the snow that we've got that haven't been open in a couple 2 or 3 seasons. and our die hard snow lovers can't seem to get enough. i like it. from skiing to boarding to even tubing was running at almost maximum capacity and that alone along with the great ski conditions charged up everybody. how many runs you've done today. three -four. connor bracken was more than ready to spend the day away from the classroom and on the ski hill but his preferance is to board. it's way easier. el nino have been very good to the ski resort so far and

dozens of students spent their holiday off to serve others in need in honor of martin luther king day. students from "core academy" put together care packages this morning for the homeless. mining company barrick gold helped out with the donations. the bags were filled with warm clothes... food... and other supplies. students also spent the rest of the day serving lunch to those at the salvation army. teachers say the kids are passionate about volunteering... since many of them come from low- income families. "one thing we teach scholars is important piece of model is you give back to community in same graciousness you have been given. core academy services youth in community and so we adopt them in 6th grade and

this is the second year in a row that core academy has reached out to help salvation army. nearly a hundred people volunteered their time to help hungry families through three square food bank. n-v energy employees and their families lended a hand with the "backpack for kids program". the group filled up bags full of food for children in need of nutritious food during the weekend. many of the kids receive most of their food lunch program. n-v energy says it's a way to help students succeed in the classroom. what the midwest has seen, midwest gasoline prices are falling much more dramatically" experts are saying we should start seeing prices under two dollars around mid february, the reason for the low gas prices? the price of oil is down to around 29 dollars a barrell in the u.s. a man is killed after being hit by a semi-truck. it happened around ten this morning on the i-15 near jean. that's about thirty minutes outside las vegas. nevada highway patrol says the man died before first responders got there. the driver of the semi did stay on scene. the crash caused some traffic delays for a few hours. a manhunt in north las vegas ends with an arrest. officers responded around 1-30 this afternoon at a home near lake mead and civic center. someone called about a domestic disturbance. police say a man took off when officers got there. a manhunt was underway in the neighborhood. officers surrounded the area. he was later arrested around four p-m. police say no one

the national help those impacted by the ongoing water crisis in flint, michigan. cars were lined outside fire stations -- where guards handed out bottled water to those affected. this comes after the water supply became contaminated with lead... after the city switched its water supply in 2014. filters and lead testing kits were also given out today -- to monitor contamination levels in the water.
