reach on public lands to nearby grant county. leader ammon bundy was among thos arrested. while the f.b.i. denies any wrongdoing, bundy's father, who had his own showdown with the federal government over grazing fees, says finicum was not posing a threat to agents. bundy says: "lavoy finicum was murdered. cold- blooded murdered. they shot him with his hands up and just literally murdered him." the armed protest began as an effort to keep two local ranchers out of prison for setting fires on public land. when that failed, it shifted to an indictment of all federal ownership of lands in the west. the local sheriff is begging the remaining occupiers to leave...to avoid more bloodshed. ward says: "this has been tearing our community apart. we don't arm up and rebel. we work through the appropriate channels. this can't happen anymore. this can't happen in america and it can't happen in harney county." over the first 3 weeks, the fbi used extreme caution with the protesters--not wanting to start a wider militia uprising. but local officials and oregon's governor

i spoke with cliven bundy...he told me he spent the day in arizona visiting with the family of lavoy finicum. cliven describes lavoy as a good friend...good family man and a great american. clivenwas very upset when i spoke to him earlier... cliven tells me he has not spoken to his sons ryan and ammon since their arrest... i did talk to mel bundy...one of their brothers...he says he's very concerned about ryan because he says ryan was shot through the shoulder last night..and doesnt think hes being taken care of. cliven bundy says he's furious about what happenned last night...and says he believes lavoy finnicum was targeted for speaking out against the government. "get out of here, get out of here federal government, bring it back to we the people in the state and the

morning... humming as you can see, police had 20-year old kahleal black restrained in a special chair .. along with what's known as a spit- hood. black is facing an assault with a deadly weapon charge. this happened friday night in front of the bellagio fountains. a metro officer shot toward black .. missing him twice .. injuring a child before taking black into custody. we spoke to black's brother after court... dymond black / suspect's brother "he's been in and out of mental homes and had to take medicine since he was a young child." "i would like to see him go to a mental hospital just to get as much help as he needs." black is being held on 2 million dollars bail and is due back in court in one week. lawyers agreed in court he will need a mental evaluation. a woman is dead... after a violent crash involving a suspected drunk driver. that man is in the hospital with life threatening injuries

from where the crash took place - near rainbow and spring mountain this morning. a witness i spoke with today says this is probably the worst crash he's witnessed in his four years in las vegas. police say the driver witness: it was one of the worst accidents ive ever seen this man who asked to remain anonymous says he was making an early morning trip to the "smiths" on rampart - when he passed a man in a yukon suv driving erratically witness: i saw this guy driving with out his headlights on. ... when i flashed my brights thats when i first noticed he was swerving in the road and he hit the center median with his vehicle. police had already been looking for the suv and say the driver had already hit several police cruisers in a neighboring area. metro police say 33 year old victor sandoval was behind the wheel and was believed to be under the influence. he made his way to the east bound lane of spring mountain when police say he blasted through a red light striking and killing a 43 year old woman in a

the southbound lane on rainbow boulevard. the woman died instantly. witness: their cars collided and i saw car parts go everywhere i saw his car flip and her car flip i think i saw him get ejected from the vehicle i think thats what i saw. both cars ended up in pieces in the parking lot of a 7- mart convenience store. store clerk debra turner says one car ended up inches from the gas pump while the other was on its side by their marquee. debra turner: devastating to see how close it was. if it would have happened a little later on, theres probably been a lot more people who would have been hurt because its a very busy intersection. very busy. police are still investigating and say its their 9th traffic related fatality this year the crash shut down the

hours... during the morning commute. a dog owner is furious after an attack that left her chihuahua dead. she says she was heading back into her home from a walk in her south valley neighborhood... when three pitbulls chased her two dogs. that's when nicole gracia says the pitbulls killed her 7-year-old chihuahua bella. she called 9-1-1 and an animal control officer said they are investigating. she wants the pitbulls' owner, who walked up while we were there, to be held accountable. your dog was out here without her leash, ok? your dogs killed my dog, ate her right here. i apologize. you better get on your knees (bleep) and pray. get off my property. you messed up. get off my property. this is not your property you better roll. the pitbulls are back home with their owner while animal control investigates. the pitbulls' owner says the incident was an accident. she says she was taking the trash out when the dogs ran out behind her.

abandoned or abused animals -- all giving purpose to an effort announced today by the animal foundation. clark county's shelter unveiled a plan to treat and save all animals in need. "they looked at me with those soft, passionate eyes saying please take me home." their faces tug at your heartstrings... nats of barking saving all animals.. it's the goal of mission impossible 2020... a five-year plan the animal foundation hopes will bring them closer to becoming a no-kill shelter.... christine robinson, executive director, the animal foundation "it includes a whole array of programs to help us achieve that goal over the next five years." executive director christine robinson says the plan comes with improvements to medical treatments and a surrender intervention program that has already prevented 450 animals from entering the shelter, by giving local families resources to keep them. the effort is one local and city leaders are behind-- and also includes a plan to spay and

"this wouldn't expand medical marijuana to states where it doesn't exist. it would just say in states where it's legal, doctors who are treating veterasn should have the option of talking about it or recommending it." nevada congressman joe heck also signed the letter - requesting the change of policy. heck is also a doctor. all the speculation is about to end - and

soon begin - with the iowa caucuses now just five days away. the field of republican candidates will have one more chance to sway the hawkeye state electorate - when they go face-to- face in thursday night's fox news debate. although - as joel waldman reports - one candidate will be missing. waldman (on-cam intro) says: "republican frontrunner, donald trump, says he's passing on the debate to raise money for veterans ...a move his competitors don't seem too heartbroken about." and you'll get a free 6-inch sub when you buy a 30-oz. drink just for signing up. the clark county school district - kicking off another campaign - to help the united way. superintendent pat skorkowsky joined teachers, administrators and those who have been helped by the united way to kick off ccsd's annual campaign for the nonprofit. the event took place at the northwest career and technical academy this morning. it's all part of a fundraising effort - to help students and families succeed. "we really focus on health, education and financial stability because if families and children don't have all three of those, then one of the others is going to fall down, right?" "we listen to what their needs are and then we go otut into the community and raise funds through all kinds of corporations and other nonprofits and we try to pull them together." the united way has given back more than three million dollars - through the campaign over the years.

people hit the streets of the valley to count the number of homeless. this was the annual homeless count done by volunteers. the information gathered will help teh county apply for grants. last year alone, clark county received around 12-million dollars to be used to help reduce the number of homeless in the valley. dan kulin / clark county "the volunteers are going around, they are not disturbing the homeless, but they are doing a head count so to speak of all of the individuals they e." phillip hollon / volunteer, salvation army "this is my third year doing the homeless counts, and this year we've certainly seen an increase in terms of past years, an increase of women that have been out on the streets." the count shows local leaders the magnitude of the challenge of eliminating homelessnes in the county. in 2015, the homeless census found more than 7-thousand homeless.. and estimated that more than 34- thousand people experience homelessness in southern nevada throughout the year. there's much more coming up in the second half of fox5 news at 5. members of the
