we begin fox5 news at ten with breaking news. police are investigating two separate homicides tonight... i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. the first happened just before 7-30 at an apartment complex near pecos and lake mead. metro police say they found a young man in his late teens, early twenties dead in the middle of the courtyard. he had been shot several times. witnesses say they saw a man wearing a hoodie running from the scene. police are not sure yet if the victim lived in those apartments. just an hour later... metro police were called to another homicide. this one near the strip... on las vegas boulevard and st. louis avenue. a man was taken to the hospital... where he died. the nearly month-long standoff between the government -- and the armed militia at an oregon wildlife refuge-- turned deadly. seven protesters... are still in jail tonight. fbi agents say they stopped militant leader ammon bundy - and a group of others last night after learning the group was headed

meeting in a neighboring town. it ended with a deadly shootout. lavoy finicum was killed. finicum was an arizona rancher and the group's spokesman. "ward says: "this has been tearing our community apart. we don't arm up and rebel. we work through the appropriate channels. this can't happen anymore. this can't happen in america and it can't happen in harney county." " armed trooopers are now parked in the middle of the road on both sides of the wildlife refuge -- no one is allowed in -- but protestors are free to leave at anytime through the checkpoints. they have to show i-d and agree to a search. cliven bundy tells fox 5 the fight in oregon isn't over... and says he and his family will continue fighting for freedom. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg talked to him today. she has his side of the story from bunkerville. cyndi- cliven buundy tells me hs spent his day in arizona consoling the family of lavoy finnicum he calls lavoy a good friend a great father and a great american he says what happened

the bundys say public defenders are representing ryan and ammon, and they don't plan on securing a different lawyer because they say it's pointless and a waste of money. cliven bundy also added he typically represents himself in court. the man arrested for waving a gun around in the middle of the las vegas strip went before a judge today. humming 20-year-old kahleal black was restrained and wearing a spit hood when he was wheeled into the courtroom.... and moaned through most of his appearance. black is facing an assault with a deadly weapon charge. he was taken into custody friday night in front of the bellagio fountains. after a metro officer shot toward black .. missing him twice .. injuring a child. black's brothers say he is need of mental health... and that he had stopped taking medication for schizophrenia days before.

" we spoke to psychologist louis mortillaro... who says people who follow what their doctors recommend are the ones who improve. people often have multiple issues with mental illness like addiction... which can make it difficult to seek help. he says if you have someone in your life living with a mental illness... your support and awareness can go a long way in helping them. a woman is dead after an early morning crash... involving a suspected drunk

when he passed the suv-- which was driving erratically. " i saw this guy driving with out his headlights on. ... when i flashed my brights thats when i first noticed he was swerving in the road and he hit the center median with his vehicle. " witnesses say the crash near rainbow and spring mountain... was one of the worst they had ever seen. victor sandoval was behind the wheel of the s-u-v and was believed to be under the influence. police say he made his way to the east bound lane of spring mountain when he sped through a red light striking and killing a 43 year old woman in a nissan.. "witness: their cars collided and i saw car parts go everywhere i saw his car flip and her car flip i think i saw him get ejected from the vehicle i think thats what i saw. " both cars ended up in pieces in the parking lot of a 7-mart convenience store. sandoval was taken to u-m-c with life threatening injuries. police are looking for the driver of a pick up truck wanted in connection to deadly shooting

surveillance video. police say early saturday morning-- a man was riding a bike near owens and mary jane drive when a black truck pulled up next to him... and fired several shots before taking off... the victim was transported to u-m-c where he died. if you have any information on this shooting-- you are asked to contact crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. postal inspectors are looking for people who have been stealing mail-- across the valley. here are some of the images of the suspects... possibly involved in the theft. postal officials say more than once... these suspects were caught casing several banks... of mailboxes. if you recognize either suspect-- you are asked to call police. parents are on high alert-- and police are investigating.. after an attempted abduction near a northeast valley school. a letter was sent home to parents at o'callaghan middle school.... after school officials say two students were approached by an adult male as they were walking home from school.

the students if they wanted a ride home. a letter was also sent to parents of brookman elementary school. school officials want to take this time to remind parents to take extra safety precautions while walking to and from school always walk in groups never take a ride from a stranger. if approached shout and yell as loud as you can run to a safe place... like back to school, into a store or a church. if possible get a license plate number. the clark county school district is teaming up with the united way.... kicking off their annual campaign this morning with a breakfast at the northwest career and technical academy. it's all part of a fundraising effort - to help struggling students and families. " we really focus on health, education, and financial stability. because we know if families and children don't have all three of those, one of the others is going to fall down, right? the united way has given back more than three million dollars - through the campaign over the years. doctors aren't

marijuana as treatment for veterans... but a directive that prohibits them... expires at the end of the month. and some lawmakers say now- is the time to make the change. veterans go into the community right now, they are getting medical marijuana without hteir doctors recommending it, and it comes out of their pocket. so that would be something we're looking to pay for, just like any other drug. nevada congresswoman dina titus... is among a bi- partisan group of legislators urging the department of veterans affairs to change the policy. they argue the option should be available - in states like nevada - where medical marijuana has been legalized. hundreds of volunteers hit the streets overnight... in an effort to count the homeless across the valley. volunteers fanned out-- across areas where homeless people take shelter. the information gathered will help the county apply for grants that support housing, job training and other critical programs that get the homeless off the streets. last year alone, clark county received around

"this is my third year doing the homeless counts, and this year we've certainly seen an increase in terms of past years, an increase of women that have been out on the streets." "it also gives us a picture of the homelesness in our community and it shows us what kind of challenges we face and our efforts to eliminate homelesness." "they looked at me with those soft, passionate eyes saying please take me home." their faces tug at your heartstrings... nats of barking saving all animals.. it's the goal of mission impossible 2020... a five-year plan the animal foundation hopes will bring them closer to becoming a no-kill shelter.... christine robinson, executive director, the animal foundation "it includes a whole

to help us achieve that goal over the next five years." executive director christine robinson says the plan comes with improvements to medical treatments and a surrender intervention program that has already prevented 450 animals from entering the shelter, by giving local families resources to keep them. the effort is one local and city leaders are behind-- and also includes a plan to spay and neuter "community cats" "we call it tnr trap neuter return. returning fixed ferals to the community is already helping in councilman bob coffin's neighborhood.... because the cats... eat the rats... which prevents them from doing millions in property damage. bob coffin, las vegas city council "we don't want to kill every stray animal that comes out. we hate the fact that we've got probably the leading city in the nation for abandoned pets no we don't like that reputation and people generally don't want to do that, but they don't know how to stop it." and not just abandoned pets... but also... abusedand mistreated pets. that's where the district attorney's office comes into play. steve wolfson,

display. armed protesters who have occupied the refuge for months showed no signs of backing down how are you feeling this morning? jason patrick: i feel fine. reporter: everybody else? patrick: i think they feel fine, too. even after the arrest of the group's leader, ammon bundy, and the shooting death of its occasional spokesman, lavoy finicum. a 56 miles stretch of hwy 395 was shut down after what the fbi calls an enforcement action tuesday afternoon, which ended in gunshots. ammon bundy's brother ryan suffered minor injuries, and, according to family members, lavoy finicum was killed. we've been involved with this however long we have now, trying to get to a peaceful resolution and that's what everyone says on the inside and that's what's been said on the outside publicly, and now one of my friends is dead. the next day, back in burns, harney county sheriff dave ward became emotional, addressing the loss of life. it didn't have to happen. we all make choices in life.

choices go bad. the whole occupation has been difficult for the community, some siding with the intentions of the occupiers, others tired of the whole thing. burns is torn right down the middle. families have been ripped, neighbors don't talk. so this has been a really bad situation for us. by mid-afternoon, word spread that ammon bundy, now in federal custody, was calling for occupiers to leave. there were reports of some doing just that, risking the fbi checkpoints that had been set up on the way out. but a small group stayed behind, as did the fbi, watching and waiting for whatever comes next. we've also just learned from authorities in oregeon... three more people arrested in connection with this armed group. the bundy family has gathered at their home in bunkerville...follo wing last nights shooting of laboy finnicum and arrest of ryan

fox 5s cyndi lundeberg spoke to the family ....she has an update from the bundy ranch. cliven bundy tells me he thinks last night that authorities wanted to kill more people including his sons... he also says ever since their stand off here in 2014... he has a body guard 24-7 so if anything does happen to him there's a witness.. i spoke to cliven after he returned from visiting the family of lavou finnicjm. the bundys say lavou had told them he didn't expect to make it out of oregon alive... cliven says he hasn't spoke to ryan or ammond since their arrest but says he has spoken to people that were with him. and as far as the bundys are concerned what happenned last night was cold blooded murder " they killed this man, they shot him like 3 times, he got down on the ground and they shot him 3 or 4 more times. i mean what kind of human being with a dead man there and you're gonna shoot him some more? i mean what kind of person does that?

sanction another debate before the new hampshire primary... as bernie sanders paid a visit to president obama. the two anti- abortion activists who undercover shot videos of conversations with planned parenthood members have hired a legal team. attorneys jared woodfill and terry yates say they believe this is what they called a runaway grand jury.. switched from detroit water to the flint river. but the river water wasn't for corrosion, and lead began leaching from pipes into city environmental groups have filed seeking the all lead pipes in flint's water which could cost dollars. "snyder says: "longer term there are lead pipes in the system. again, where they are, we're still mapping all that, there's a lot of work to be done there. and then you have to figure out the long term infrastructure plan to do replacement of those things."
