several red lights. why police say he was racing away from officers. this is fox5 news at 11. local las vegas. we're starting off with some breaking news. police are on the scene of two separate homicides.... that happened within an hour of each other. i'm john huck i'm christine maddela. the first happened just before 7-30 at an apartment complex near pecos and lake mead. metro police say they found a young man in his late teens, early twenties dead in the middle of the courtyard. he had been shot several times. witnesses say they saw a man wearing a hoodie running from the scene. police are not sure yet if the victim lived in those apartments. and about an hour later, police were called out to a deadly stabbing on santa rita drive near at las vegas boulevard and saint louis avenue. police say the victim was taken to the hospital where he died. they say he and another man got into a fight inside this home... when the suspect stabbed the victim several times. they say two or three other people were inside the house and know who the suspect is. police are

suspect... who police say may be with a female. three more people have been arrested in connection with the armed militia group that seized a remote federal wildlife refuge in oregon. one of the militant members was killed last night in a shootout with the federal agents. officials say ammon bundy and other members of the militant group refused to surrender during a traffic stop. police say it isn't clear who fired first... but the group's spokesman lavoy finicum was shot and killed. fox5's cyndi lundeberg spoke to ammon bundy's father cliven about what happened last night... and how the group will continue to fight for their cause. cyndi- cliven buundy tells me hs spent his day in arizona consoling the family of lavoy finnicum he calls lavoy a good friend a great father and a great american he says what happened to him was nothing short of cold blooded murder bb- he left with his hands in the air he was pleading do not shoot we have women in the car the bundy family describes what they say were the last moments of lavoy

the cause. a sacrifice hope to honor tonight. ammon bundy is urging followers at the wildlife refuge to leave... according to his attorney. the attorney asked the federal government to not prosecute anyone who wants to leave... and says the battle now goes to courtrooms. police say a suspected drunk driver is to blame... in a brutal crash that killed a woman instantly. this happened at three this morning, at rainbow and spring mountain. metro says officers approached a stopped s-u-v where the driver appeared to be asleep. officers parked their cars around the s-u-v so it wouldn't roll. the driver woke up, and sped off... hitting some of the metro cars. police say the driver blasted through several red lights, and hit a nissan. the 43-year-old woman in that car was killed... and the driver has life-threatening injuries. : "their cars collided and i saw car parts go

" metro says the driver is 33-year- old victor sandoval. the crash shut down the intersection for more than six hours. this is metro's ninth traffic related fatality this year. the suspect accused of waving a gun on the strip appeared in court this morning in a blue blanket and a spit hood. he moaned and hummed loudly throughout the proceedings. "suspect moans and hums " bail was set at two million dollars for kahleal black. police say on friday night, black aimed an empty gun at tourists and officers. a metro officer shot at him, but missed. a child was grazed by a bullet. black's brother came to court for support today, and tells fox5 black has a history of mental illness. "i've seen the video. i would just hope they don't charge him as a criminal like he did it on purpose, charge him as a mentaly ill person." "he's not violent at all, he's a big teddy

court appearance is scheduled for february third. cases like this put a spotlight on mental healthcare in nevada, and where improvements can be made. we spoke to a psychologist who says they can only do so much, if a person doesn't want help. people who follow the steps get better. people who want to get better, follow the process, get better. but there's people out there who don't want to get better. dr. louis mortillaro says people who stop taking their medicine can experience hallucinations. people often have multiple issues with mental illness like addiction... which can make it difficult to seek he would like to emphasis in schools and home management. metro police of a weekend shooting... in hopes someone will recognize the suspect's truck. police say on saturday around four-30 in the morning, a newer model black pickup truck pulled up alongside a man on a bicycle at owens and nellis. the driver fired several rounds at the man on the bike, then took off. died at the

metro says the truck is a 2014 or 2015 full size chevrolet silverado, or g- m-c sierra. postal inspectors are setting up cameras where people are stealing mail in hopes of catching the thieves. the man then the students if they wanted a ride a letter was also sent to parents of brookman school. the night canvassing streets... to count the number of homeless people living in our valley. this homeless census count is done each year. it helps our grants used to help the homeless population. volunteers are trained to not disturb anyone. instead, they observe how many there are... and conditions are like. "it also gives us a picture of the homelesness in our community and it shows us what kind of challenges we face and our efforts to eliminate homelesness." the animal foundation has a plan... to save as many pets' lives as possible. today, shelter announced its plans to become a no-kill shelter... and discussed what it will take to get this status. "they looked at me with those soft, passionate eyes saying please take me home." their faces tug at your heartstrings... nats of barking saving all animals.. it's the goal of mission impossible 2020... a five-year plan the animal foundation hopes will bring them closer to becoming a no-kill shelter.... christine robinson, executive director, the animal foundation "it includes a whole array of programs to help us achieve that goal over the next five years." executive director christine robinson says the plan comes with improvements to medical treatments and a

with more than 10- thousand adoptions last year, the intention is to continue to give all animals forever homes. just in the half hour i've been here i've been able to touch about a dozen animals. none of them were aggressive. none of them were anything but wanting to go home. the animal foundation also launched a website to increase transparency and allow the public to track the progress of the program. we'll have a link posted with this story on our website, fox5 vegas dot com. americans are finding more creative ways to make a living... beyond the typical 40 hour work- week. for the first time in a decade... the u-s department of labor will try to figure out how many people work an "in demand" job... something we see a lot of in las vegas. these jobs include gigs like being an uber driver, selling things on ebay or other sites, or renting out rooms for travelers. the last time the government collected this type of information was in 2005... before social media and

some 9-1-1 calls from cell phones in mesquite, are getting re-routed to las vegas after a recent a-t-and-t upgrade. according to the spectrum of saint george... when the company switched to a faster service, it caused some emergency calls to be sent to the las vegas dispatch center. mesquite callers are told to say where they are, and stay on the line. calls will be transfered back to mesquite. v-a doctors aren't allowed to marijuana to veterans under a directive. that ban expires in just a few days... and some lawmakers are opportunity to re-examine the rule. extend medical marijuana to states where it doesn't exist. it would say in states where it is legal, doctors who are treating veterans should have the option of even talking about it, and recommending it." congresswoman dina titus says she would like to see more testing done on medical
