local news at 5:30. let's get you up to date with the latest local headlines. unlv and sheldon adelson may team up to build a billion dollar stadium and bring the n-f-l to las vegas... fox five's elizabeth watts is live in our newsroom with what she has learned.. i spoke with a sands corp spokesperson who confirms they're looking into building a billion dollar stadium on u-n-l-v owned land near campus... and tomorrow the owner of the oakland raiders is meeting with sheldon adelson- at adelson's request... he wants to build a 60-thousand seat, domed- state of the art- stadium that would be home to unlv's football team and sporting events year round.. the location would be the 42 acres of land unlv owns near campus.. it's on trop east of koval. the sands says the southern nevada tourism infrastructure committee is meeting in the middle of this year to give suggestions to the governor on prioritizing tourism improvement projects in southern nevada... they believe

more than a new world class stadium... so the sands may seek legislative approval for hotel room taxes that support the l-v-c-v-a to be diverted to the project. the l-v-c-v-a said in a statement it looks forward to the project being presented... and any new facilities that will attract more visitors is a positive for our community. u-n-l-v's president released a statement... saying as previously stated in public meetings- the unlv site has tremendous value... and says no decision has been made on how the property will be used... but he said if a public-private partnership can be formed that includes the development of a new special events stadium with little or no cost to unlv.. and they can use the facility.. it would be of great value to unlv. live in the newsroom ew ffn llv. we have a web poll online- do you think an nfl team will play in las vegas in your lifetime...

of the pieces of the puzzle he has to make his city a future economic hotbed. faraday's plans to build at apex industrial park is already drawing attention from other industries. vision of also making his city a medical research center. the mayor also announced plans to build around las vegas motor speeday to make access to the area from 15 much easier. but what he seemed most proud of.....was reducing the more than $152 million dollar deficit he inherited to about $74 million his first year in office. today that deficit numbmb is even better 01:50:54 i'm happy to report that we've reduced it to under $23 million. back to faraday we asked the mayor of he had anything to say about the nevada commissioner of ethics looking into the faraday future deal to see if the deal meets minimum job qualification requirements. he said he doesn't see any problems

disasters in space history... the explosion of the space shuttle challenger - which killed everyone aboard. phil keating tells us how they're being honored in cape canaveral, florida. it's a haunting image seared into the minds of millions of americans: the moment the space shuttle challenger blew up...killing all seven people aboard. a booster engine failed just 73 seconds after launch, causing the disaster in the bright blue skies. the widow of commander dick scobee describes what she saw that day... scobee rodgers says: "it was elegant to see it climbing toward the heavens, when the unspeakable happened, the numbing, frozen disbelief happened to us. the shuttle carried six astronauts....and teacher christa mcauliffe....who was selected in a nationwide search to become nasa's first citizen passenger. fellow teacher barbara morgan says right up until launch day,

an exciting flight for history buffs. "(engine starts)" a restored world war ii japanese "zero fighter" took to the skies wednesday. the flight test was conducted by a former u-s air force pilot - because no japanese pilots had a license to fly this plane. this particular plane was found decaying in papua new guinea in the 1970s. it was owned by an american - who sold it to a japanese businessman for nearly three- million dollars in 2010. he says he wanted japanese people -- old and young -- to remember the past and see how far japanese technology has come. now fox5 weather 24/7, with chief meterologist ted pretty a great day for us on friday with a high of 67 degrees and partly cloudy skies. saturday will be warmer with 70
