live in las vegas fox5 news at 6 starts now. a summerlin neighborhood is on edge as police search for someone who shot a man and teenage girl.. where a key piece of evidence was left behind. why tourists were told to get out of the luxor.. what an employee found that caused so much concern. sending a valentine's message to drivers along boulder highway.. what metro and the highway patrol hoped dressing up in a funny costume would accomplish. this is fox5 news at 6. local. las vegas a still morning in summerlin was shattered by the sound of sirens after someone shot two people during an apparent home invasion. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. the neighborhood is normally very quiet .. on teh edge of summerlin off hualapai and spring mountain.. but tonight .. neigbors are on edge because a gunman is still on the run. fox five's elizabeth watts live where police found an important piece of

metro police say a man and a teenage girl were shot and are in critical condition... they have reason to believe those involved knew each other and this was not random. crime scene tape cordons off homes in a gated summerlin community for hours... around 4:40 wednesday morning there was a shooting inside a home on garden glen way.. officers arrived to find two victims suffering gunshot wounds... they were rushed to umc. detectives started processing the scene and worked well into the late afternoon... metro police officer michael rodriguez our detectives are actively searching for additional evidence looking for additional witnesses related to this crime. the suspects had taken off by the time officers arrived.. a gun was found lying in the grass in a park across the street... detectives believe this gun was involved in the crime.. one neighbor walking her dogs through the park during the day says her crime alerts show her home

unrike weding /lives nearby its so scary its such a nice neighborhood you know everyone minds their own business its awful home invasions are getting more and more but police wanted to assure the public this wasn't random... metro police michael rodriguez officer neighborsin the area should feel comforted in that fact that we don't have somebody randomly going out and targeting residents in the middle of the night one neighbor who lives inside the gated community said that house seemed to cause some trouble in ere before this... bevothi thi/neighbor neighbor say a lot of people in and out of that house she said crime has gone up in the area in the past few years.. someone even broke into her home.. but still anything like this. two suspects out there tonight.. police wouldn't give a description- likely because they know who they are.. but were working to about the relationships. took off in a car or on foot but if you saw anything suspicious after 4:40 this morning while out and about you're urged to call metro police or crimestoppers right away.

according to clark county assessor property records... the home is held in a family trust. the family that lives there recently moved there in december. luxor employees have allowed more than 50 guests back into their rooms ... a few hours after they evacuated three floors of the pyramid after a worker found a suspicious substance. fox 5's ophelia young is in front of the hotel and ophelia - what's the latest on this incident? right a liquid along with a few other suspicioius things but police wont give us any more details on what specifically. all we now know is they've deemed it non-hazardous. clark county fire, las vegas fire and rescue, hazmat and metro investigators were all called to the luxor around 11 this morning. they evacuated the 27th 28th and 29th floor - more than 50 people were asked to leave for their

parts of the hotel were blocked off. "it was past the registration desk there was a hallway leading to the elevators and it was blocked off and there were security guards blocking the entrances to that area." metro says guest service found several suspicious items including a liquid in a hotel room. they won't say if it was drugs or something explosive - nor would they describe where and in what sort of container it was found. around 3 today investigators decided it was not dangerous. but their investigation isnt over. police are still looking into who is or was staying in that room - how the liquid ended up there. for the meantime - luxor is saying sorry to evacuated guests with free exhibit and spa passes.

jeans. branklin was driving a silver mercedes with nevada plates. if you think you have seen this man ... call north las vegas police. a scare in the air over the valley. mid afternoon, the pilot of a united airlines jet filled with passengers going to houston radioed there was engine trouble .. the pilot turned the jet around and circled over lake mead for a while. you can see the path the pilot flew in this image from flight-aware dot com which tracks flights. the flight eventually landed safely back at mccarran without trouble and is being inpected by clark county fire and the airline. there were 162 people on board this united jet. a woman is safe her house on fire. could be seen from all over town coming from the 61 year old home on pyramid drive, near rancho. thick black smoke was pouring from the windows when firefighters arrived just before nine this morning.

the smoke and noticed a woman in the backyard. that man and another man helped get her over the fence to safety. she told firefighters what happened that likely led to the flames. "she told fire investigators she had a candle burning in a bedroom and aparantly it caught the bed on fire, some linen. she put the fire out, rolled up the linen, thought the fire was completely out, left it inside the room, and slept in the living room this morning and awoke to the smoke inside the house." the woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. earlier this morning... a dog died in a fire that started in a backyard shed. clark county firefighters were called to this mobile home near christy and lake mead at around 3:30 this morning. they found the shed behind the home was on fire-- and quickly put it out. the people inside were able to get out safely-- but their home did suffer some damage... and their dog did not survive. the cause of the fire is now under

north las vegas police are continuing their investigation into the death of a 2- year old girl who was hit by a vehicle over the weekend. police returned to the scene yesterday near pecos and lake mead. last night .. north las vegas police impounded a white van matching the description of the one witnesses say hit the girl.. and then left the scene. police have talked to the van's owner .. they are cooperating .. but have not made an arrest. forensic tests are being conducted to determine if it's the same van seen that night. if you have any information that could help police... call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. remembering the life of a local legend.. a man who ran a well known auto dealership ... but maybe best know for his love of and work with unlv. plus ... a valentines surprise crossing bouler highway today.. why drivers were supposed to look twice to make sure they were seeing

a day after fox5 reported a couple arrested for public sex on the high roller... more news involving the observation wheel... we were there for a much differnt story today. las vegas fire and rescue used the high roller for training.. they simulated rescue operations on teh 550-foot tall wheel. the department will also be training on the high roller tomorrow morning. las vegas is mourning the loss of a man - who made a strong impact in the local community. rich abajian has passed away - from a heart attack. he was the general manager at findlay toyota... and along with the company was a big supporter of the athletics programs at u-n- l-v as well as u-n- r. abajian was an athlete himself... on the field as a running back for u-n-r... where he graduated in 1975. two years later... he joined u-n-l-v in an assistant coaching position.

instrumental in launching the southern nevada sports hall of fame - where he was inducted himself in 2008. u-n-l-v confirmed the death today. interim basketball coach todd simon said rich abajian was - quote - a great supporter and inspiration to everyone here at unlv." local law enforcement shows they have a heart and want you to be safe on our streets. they dressed up as a giant heart today and walked back anf forth across boulder highway near sun valley avenue this morning for a few hours. the idea is to make drivers and pedestrians more aware of surroundings and cut down on local people being killed while crossing streets. sgt. peter kisfalbi / las vegas metro police "boulder highway by its nature is a high speed corridor, the speed limit is 45 mph and further to the south it changes to 55. when a pedestrian gets hit by a car that's going 45 mph that's a no win situation." this was a joint operation today with las vegas metro police and the nevada highway aptrol. last year, 61

killed in metro's jurisdiction... 20-percent of them were along boulder highway. some news now to put a smile on your face.. the actions of a local 5th grader saved the life of a friend who was choking. and today, he was honored during a lunch assembly. two weeks ago gabriel wallace and his friend kyle sucalidto were eating lunch. kyle started to choke on rice .. gabriel sprung into action and performed the hemlich maneuver on him. an action that saved his friend's life. i feel like i always really knew it or i just saw from tv i realized he saved me i thanked him a bunch. steve schorr, the school's name sake and the clark county fire department honored gabriel with a hero award .. along with a vip pass to shark reef for the both of them. there's less than 2 weeks until nevada's caucus. the democratic caucus is on saturday february 20th. and the republican caucus follows on tuesday february 23rd. you'll get information in the mail on where you need to go. only registered republicans and democrats can caucus. republicans must register by this saturday if they want to take part. democrats have until the day of their caucus to register... and they can do that on site. both hillary clinton and bernie sanders will be in las vegas a few days early before the democratic caucus... to speak to local voters at a town hall event. the town hall is set for february 18th.. a week from tomorrow. a time and location hasn't been announced yet. democratic party officials say questions will focus on issues affecting nevada and the latino community. tonight .. the field of republican presidential hopefuls is dwindling. at the same time though .. some candidates are getting the shot in the arm their campaigns desperately need. kristin fisher has

after spending more than seventy days campaigning in new hampshire and only placing sixth in the granite state's primary new jersey governor chris christie says he's out. carly fiorina is also throwing in the towel after a close to last place finish in new hampshire. meanwhile ohio governor john kasich is enjoying his wave of popularity after coming in second. not wasting any time kasich arrived in south carolina early this morning and spent the day meeting with constituents touting his desire to run a positive campaign. kasich says: "when people go negative it's because they've got something they're not doing right to connect and i'd rather be connecting and being positive." former florida governor jeb bush is still hanging on telling voters they've pushed the pause button. today he unveiled an ad in south carolina featuring his brother. nat of bush ad: "there is no doubt in my mind that jeb bush will be a great commander in chief for our country." taking the blame for his fifth place finish senator marco rubio is admitting his showing at saturday's debate took some wind out of his sail but the freshman senator says he's moving forward. rubio says:"here's the good news,

lights up the night sky over the coast of southern california.. "three, two, one, and lift off of the united launch alliance's delta rocket carrying the mission for the natinoal reconisance office." this launch was at vandenberg air force base in california. it's the first mission for the delta-4 since its successful deployment last july. the rocket is carrying out the classified n-r-o launch forty-five mission for the national reconnaissance office. germany's largest automaker is recalling hundreds of thousands of cars because of airbag problems. volkswagen is recalling 680- thousand vehicles of different models in the u-s. the company says the vehicles hold driver's side airbags that may have defective inflators from takata. the recall includes several models made between 2006 and 2014. volkswagen plans
