thanks for joining us for your only local news at 5:30. let's get you up to date with the latest local headlines. a metro k-9 is on the road to recovery tonight... after being stabbed several times. it happened while police were trying to take custody of a suspect in an overnight standoff near twain and maryland parkway. that's where we find fox five's les krifaton... with the latest on the k-9's condition and a look at the scene that has returned back to normal, les? you really wouldn't know that this entire complex was either evacuated or on lockdown after a man apparently fired shots inside his apartment here and started yelling for help. after the police

the man to come out the k9 was sent in. this is a picture of sgt eric kerns and his 8 year old k9 partner nicky. nicky following orders went after the man who suspect was bit numerous times and the k9 was stabbed by the suspect several times in the head. " the suspect was taken to hospital the k9 to this emergency clinic where he underwent surgery. around 2 o'clock this afternooin four hours after then incident the friends of las vegas police k9's posted this message on its facebook page. good news k9 nicky is out of surgery and stable at this time

more positive outcome than others across the country. so far this year, eight police k9's have died in attacks in other cities. another dog... a three-month old puppy... is the source of concern for local animal adovcates tonight. fox 5's abby theodros joins us live from the newsroom.... with more on the health of this puppy and an online photo that brought him all this attention. a local woman visited the petland in henderson and was shocked to find what she called an "extremely underweight" puppy. she posted her picture online and now animal advocates are showing up at the store to see whats going on. this puppy is a three month old rhodesian ridgeback that just made his way

henderson. he also showed up on many facebook feeds this week after this picture was posted by a concerned customer. on friday animal control did a welfare check on the pup - and said there were no signs of animal control violations and that everything checked out. however - local animal advocates worry - the dog's behavior says something different. 26-34 vicki callahan, rhodesian ridgeback rescue volunteer: he is about 5-10 lbs underweight. he really needs some good vetting. vicki callahan is a volunteer at rhodesian ridgeback rescue in clark county and says -when she saw the picture she knew she ha d to see the dog for herself. and what she saw was very telling. callahan: he should be a little more animated than what he is. im just concerned hes not as healthy as he should be. even having just beeen transported from mo or arkansas. hes only 13 lbs he needs to be 22-24 lbs at his age. petland staff showed fox5 documents that outline the puppy's medical history. his

had an umbilical hernia repair in in missouri. they say the puppy's recent move to las vegas explains why he's underweight but a local vet thinks otherwise. 1:27-1:36 tony muratore, legacy animal hospital:most animals we should be able to faintly see the outline of the rib. this dog was way surpassed that. he was emaciated. we were unable to get in touch with the puppy's breeder in arkanas. however - that one face book post from a petland customer has brought the rhodesian ridgeback a lot of online support. theres now a gofundme account to raise about 2500 dollars that would buy the puppy and give him the appropriate medical attention. the account has raised nearly six hundred dollars in less than a day. representatives with pet-land said

r wer in nevada... say their frustration with lithties commission is only getting worse. the panel voted unanimously to keep the higher rates which shut down solar installation centers across the state earlier this month. fox 5's ophelia young is at the puc near fort apache and russel with more on today's events. in just two and half weeks - the bring back solar alliance was able to get 50 thousand of these cards signed - they are commitments to sign a petition - and enough signatures to get solar in nevada on the ballots this november. they rolled in the

wheel barrows - protested around them - and then bagged up all 50 thousand and then dumped them in front of public utilities commissioners this morning. hundreds of public commenters took the mic today - some crying, some angry, some sarcastic - anything it would take to say nevada wants solar energy. "my generation is going to have to clean up your mess." "i ask that you guys do the right thing protecting your residents. "i hope you get fired." "you and sandoval are nothing but modern day jezebels for nv energy" "this is a message from the sun actually the sun says im here!" after three hours of public comment - commissioners voted unanimously to reject the grandfathering clause - which would protect those with already installed panels from the new rates. they asserted - the new rate structure which would cost more in bills for solar customers - evens out costs shifts to non solar customers. instead - they allowed more time

officially over but we're learning nine more people are now facing federal charges. that's on top of the last four holdouts at the refuge who gave themselves up to the f-b-i yesterday. for fox5... kelsey watts was at the federal courthouse today, as many of the occupiers went before a judge for the first time. six of the 13 people who have just been charged in this case were in court today as supporters gathered on the sidewalk outside. they were in court with several of their family members and three elected officials from nevada. on the steps of the federal courthouse nevada assemblywoman michele fiore did calling the federal government a bully.
