us for your only local news at 5:30. let's get you up to date with the latest local headlines. we're seeing our first video of a k-9 officer who was attacked by a machete last week. fox five's elizabeth watts is live in the newsroom with details on how he's doing - and more on the suspect behind bars. nicky is doing well after being stabbed nearly 15 times with a machete. here's video of the k-9 who visited the k-9 station to say hello today. metro says nicky's handler sergeant eric kerns has been working- but nicky is out of commission while recovering. metro police say thurs at a standoff at an apartment near maryland and twain nicky had to go in after a man... the suspect had several dog bites but nicky had been

machete. the suspect- tolavious timmons facing felony charges. nicky had to have emergency surgery but is said to be in good spirits and acting as if nothing had happened. timmons also said to have picked up and flipped over a 600 pound robot that had sent in before nicky had to go in... and damaged that as well. so he's facing multiple charges including felony attacking a police animal.. also damaging and destroying state property. reporting live ew ffn llv according to nevada law- mistreating a police animal is a felony and punishable with up to four years in prison and ten thousand in fines. a gunman is still on the run after an argument turns deadly. it happened around nine last night at an apartment complex on karen avenue. that's near sahara and lamb. police say two men were arguing outside when one of them was shot. officers found the victim on the ground. he was taken to sunrise trauma center where he

police say a suspect has not been arrested... but they are looking for 44- year-old lacy howard as a person of interest. anyone with information about this homicide should call police or crimestoppers 7-0-2-3-8-5-55-55. there is still no answer to what caused metro's 911 system to crash two weeks ago today-- but police are explaining how they're trying to prevent the problem from happening again. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg is live at metro headquarters after asking police what may have gone wrong. metro says they don't know exactly what caused the six hour crash but believe it had to do with a surge of data which flooded their system and overwhelmed it... metro forwarded calls to north las vegas and henderson during the outage... today we asked metro if there had been any complaints because of the

there weren't any that they were of... they did say with confidence that the failure was not caused by a hack... because their firewall was still intact... currently the department is getting additional equipment... adding back up phone lines should the primary phone lines fail and they will also be setting up an offsite call center which will assist the main call center... ultimately tho they said they cannot control technology... "we cannot be sure it's technology it can fail we have improved that and we feel very confident" metro says employees have also been reminded about protocols... and during today's press conference they said they could not rule out employees plugging in usbs or their iphones as possibly leading to the crash of the server...

i'm hillary clinton, and i have always approved this message. underway today in los angeles... for a man charged with killing one girl and nine women over three decades. lonnie david franklin-junior is known as the "grim sleeper". it's in reference to the long period of apparent inactivity between killings - 13 years apart. the first murders tied to franklin were in 19-85. the victims ranged in age from 15 to 35. the 63-year-old former garbage collector and police garage attendant has pleaded not guilty. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. the trial is expected to last two to three months. the case has led to a documentary, official website and made-for-tv movie. a battle looms in washington.... over replacing the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. as doug mckelway reports... senate republicans are digging in their

for any nominee... while president obama is addressing the growing controversy. it's a tradition that dates back to the 19th century... the supreme court paying respect to the late justice antonin scalia by draping his chair in black. scalia will lie in repose on friday at the court... followed by a funeral on saturday in washington. but as tributes to one of the nation's most influential jurists continue pouring in... questions are being asked about what will happen to cases he helped decide - and others that are still pending: o'brien says: "some will be affirmed by a 4-4 vote and some will be scheduled for argument next term, and you don't know which." meanwhile both parties are still fighting over who will replace scalia... and when it will happen. cruz says: "we are one justice away from a radical five- justice left wing majority the likes of which this country has never seen." obama says: "there's no unwritten law that says it can only be done in off years. that's not in the constitutional test." republicans are digging in their

the experience has made be a better governor, a better american and better person." christie spoke before the new jersey legislature today... while proposing his latest state budget. his white house bid ended six days ago.... after a disappointing finish in the new hampshire primary. commercial air traffic between the united states and cuba will resume for the first time in five decades. the deal was signed today in havana - clearing the way for dozens of new daily flights as early as this fall - bringing hundreds of thousands of additional american travelers a year to cuba. the u-s department of transportation has opened bidding by american air carriers on as many as 110 flights a day between the two countries. that's more than five times the current number. all flights operating between the two countries today are charters. brian sandoval will be among governors from 17 states - who are planning to work together on an effort for cleaner energy and

this is fox5 news at 6. local. las vegas less than two months after a multi million dollar upgrade to our emergency call center .. it fails. today - metro emplains what happened. i'm john huck. i'm christine maddela. two weeks ago .. las vegas metro police department's 911 center's computer call system crashed. leaving people with no answers .. and long holds. today, fox 5s cyndi lundeberg spoke with metro and joins us live from polcie headquarters with metro's explanation. they say they aren't exactly sure what caused the crash... but believe it had to do with a surge of data flooding their system.. which ultimately overwhelmed it. now in response metro says they're increasing monitoring of the system... adding phone lines and also adding an offsite call center. they also said
