republicans caucus on tuesday. but attending a caucus can be more complicated and time consuming than simply voting in a primary or general election. fox five's kevin bolinger explains exactly what a caucus is all about - and what you need to know here in nevada. nats of candidate rallies/4boxed nevada has seen all of the presidential candidates numerous times making appearances and holding rallies. now it's time for the voters to decide who should get the party nomination....and in our state it's done using the caucus system. mark peplowski: this is the ultimate ground game. because each campaign is going to be working to turn people out to the caucus. getting them there is the problem. mark peplowski: the passive voters don't go. the once in a lifetime voters don't go. but those who really care about the political process, this allows them to be first in line to make a

both democrats and republicans are hoping people turn out to caucus - not only does it give a better gague of where people stand...but it allows the parties to establish engaged voters to develop a ground game to get out the vote in november. state senator aaron ford: it's talking to your neighbor about who it is you're supporting, why you're supporting that person, why your neighbor should support that person or vice versa, why your neighbor is telling you to support the person she's supporting. it's an easy process. it's not intimidating and it's not something we should avoid. michael mcdonald: it's about bringing the message to the rest of the state on where we stand and how important the caucus is to be invovled, to have your voices heard, to get behind the candidate of your choice and at the end of the day when we come out with a nominee, then everybody get behind that nominee and that's how we take the white house. depending on your party - the caucus is run differently. the democrats meet saturday at 11 a-m republicans tuesday - anywhere from 5 to 7 pm depending on your

voters can register as a democrat at the caucus site....republicans had to register by february 13th. democrats will vote by breaking into groups of the candidate of their choice listening to arguments of fellow voters. state senator aaron ford/(d) senate minority leader: the easy way to describe it is it's a community conversation. i consider caucusing as practice for picking our next president. but really all it is a community conversation on who our standard bearer for democratic principles is gonna be in november. republicans use a private paper ballot system with one vote after listening to people discuss their candidate of choice. greg bailor/nevada caucus director for republican party: everybody will have two minutes in most cases to discuss their favorite candidate. so if you're on the fence the night of the caucus and you hear a convincing speech from one of your neighbors in your preceint you might cast your ballot differently than when you arrived. the democrats have 43 total delegates in play - 35 pledged through the first vote at the national convention based

and 8 super delgates - state party leaders and elected officials who are not bound by caucus voting. repubicans have 30 delegates at the national convention split proportinately based on the outcome of the caucus. they do not have super delegates. the democrats do not allow absentee voting at their caucus but republicans do allow it for active duty military members and their families serving overseas. it takes some effort...and a little of your time....but it's the starting point for anyone who wants to make a difference. mark peplowski: it seems like the american mantra is the government is broken, let's fix it. the constitution begins with the words "we the people" and if we the people really care about their government they'll take part in the process and be part of the government instead of complaining about it. whether you are a democrat or republican you must go to your specific precinct to caucus. both state parties have set
