live from las vegas it's time for fox5 news at 11. a major power outage in laughlin left thousands in the dark for hours. we're live in laughlin with an update... as lights start to turn back on. a boy ends his life with a gun... and now is father is behind bars. the charges he's facing... and what a gun safety group says about the case. bernie sanders and hillary clinton speak to local voters the night before the democratic caucus. how they focused on issues that affect our state. this is fox5 news at 11. local las vegas. we're starting off with breaking news at 11. after a long night in the dark... the lights are slowly coming back on in laughlin. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. the outage happened around seven tonight... leaving about five thousand people without power. fox5's miguel martinez valle is in laughlin now, and miguel, we're hearing power is starting to come back?

thousands were without power for almost four hours. we spoke to gary hawley ... who lives in laughlin. he and his wife mary... were driving home from dinner on bruce woodbury drive... when he noticed the fire. "what i saw was a fireball the size of a two-story building and it suddently flashed up. "from the rear view mirror and the town going dark and the casino row down there is kinda something to see." the american red cross, clark county office of emergency management, lauglhin officials and other community partners are working together to respond to this fire and outage. here in las vegas, fire crews are battling a house fire near the south point casino. you're taking a live look at the fire now. it broke out just before nine, at

and las vegas boulevard. one firefighter was hurt on this job. here's some video from when our crews first arrived at the scene; you can see flames leaping through the house. crews say this is an abandoned home... and someone started the fire to keep warm. they have to let it burn, because the area doesn't have a fire hydrant. crews are bringing water in. there was a casino power outage near the las vegas strip overnight. and gamblers at the westgate were left wondering when they'll get their money back. the power went out around midnight on the westgate's casino floor. clark county firefighters investigated, while

dark. and while power was being restored, another alarm tripped... causing more confusion. ""nat sound." "vrr vrr like real loud so everyone started coming down the stairs people that were asleep they came downstairs they wanted to knwo what was going on." " staff members surrounded machines and printed cash vouchers for players. slot machines are computers, and they keep information after a hard boot. the westgate has not commented on the outage, or what caused it. a father is facing charges... after his 12-year-old son shot and killed himself. this happened on february 13th. police say they got a call about a child being shot, and when they arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound. he later died at the hospital. police says the injuries were self-inflicted, and the gun belonged to the boy's father, olin manuel. we spoke to the parents of a girl who was killed while playing with a gun... who are actively working to prevent more gun tragedies

" it just keeps happening. it's almost like a slap in the face every time you see this, you know what the families are going through, you know the horrors from the siblings, cousins, uncles, aunts, the whole family is affected by this. " manuel is being charged with child abuse with substantial bodily harm resulting in death. metro says he's also being charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. the boy's funeral will be in arizona. north las vegas police are giving more information about two horrific child abuse cases. both involve babies and their caretakers. police say a five month old baby died february fifth. his baby-sitter... cynthia lavender... told police she was frustrated with the baby boy, and threw him against the wall. on february 3rd, the baby was found unresponsive, and died from his injuries. police say it's important to stay vigilant when it comes to your child's care. "our message is simple and its this. if you have child

ask questions. if you notice bruise ask questions if child complaining about something ask questions." in the second case, police say alejandra robles was watching a baby at an unlicensed daycare service. she's accused of throwing the baby, and causing permanent brain injuries. this happened back in november, and robles was arrested on wednesday. tomorrow... hillary clinton... and senator bernie sanders will go head to head in tomorrows caucus. both held events today to rally last minute voters. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg had the chance to speak to the former secretary of state... she joins us now live from del sol high school... we asked you our viewers... what you wanted us to ask hillary clinton... and we got your answers...

everything from the solar battle.... to clark county education... and the need for nevadans to get involved in the election. let me say i am the best prepared and tested to take on whoever the republicans nominate former secretary of state hillary clinton isn't just prepared for senator bernie sanders... she says she's ready to take on whoever becomes the republican nominee. she says the trials and tribulations of this year from her email scandal to the benghazi hearings... has only strengthed her resolve to push forward. i have been under attack as you know for a long time im still standing in nevada both the sanders and clinton campaigns have been working to earn the latino vote which makes up nearly one third of the population. but the former secretary of state tells fox 5 her main campaign strategy is to better every americans life... nevada and beyond.

the poll also says about a quarter of democrats still have not made up their minds which candidate they will be supporting. by the way... actress susan saradon will be here in our studio tomorrow on fox5 news this morning to talk about the caucus. that interview is at 7:45. the democratic caucus is tomorrow. the republican caucus is on tuesday february 23-rd. we will bring you a special edition of fox five news at five -- saturday night. we'll have live coverage of the results, the candidates local caucus headquarters and our political analyst will weigh in. bernie sanders also met with supporters today... and made sure people understand the importance of our caucus "in 10 20 30 years from now... people will look back on what happens in nevada and say this is was beginning of political revoluation (cheers)." sanders held a rally and concert in henderson.

the planet hollywood parking garage... turned into a deadly shooting just west of the strip. metro says this started at one-30 this morning. after the fight, there were shots fired from one car to another, at alderbaran avenue. a fox5 viewer saw police investigating the scene, where a woman's body was found. he took this video you'll only see here on fox5. " i don't witness these things very often but i would say they were very calm, very professional, seemed almost routine to them " police say the car with an injured man and another woman went to the cosmopolitan valet for help. both were rushed to the hospital, where the woman died.

planet hollywood parking garage connects the victims found at the cosmopolitan, to the woman found at alderbaran. police haven't said if all three victims were in the same car, and how the woman's body ended up on the street. they're looking for a man driving a gray 2015 toyota camry. if you have information that help police, call crime stoppers at 702-385-55-55. a woman was able to escape her captors early this morning after they kidnapped her. police say a woman was held against her will at a home near cheyenne and fort apache. police say she got away around six, and a neighbor helped her out. but when police arrived... the couple accused of kidnapping the victim had already taken off. they arrested a woman at a home a few miles away. but the other suspect got away again, running through a neighborhood near rainbow and alexander. "neighbor/anonymou s: he basically ran up to my gate and started shaking my gate really hard. but instead just hopped it. i dont know where he went. he must of

" the second suspect was eventually taken into custody. police haven't said how the couple arrested knows the victim... but they do say the victim was injured. a metro police sergeant passed away suddenly last week. and now the community is coming together for his wife and three children. "officers down" held a fundraiser today, with "nothing bundt cakes" and "windy city beef and pizza". they raised funds for sergeant mike ford, who died in his sleep. he was 47 years old, and had been with metro 20 years. a portion of all sales at both businesses went directly to his family. a puppy was rescued... after getting thrown from a moving car. "bandit" broke his leg, but the people caring for him say he's still playful and in good spirits. "rottweillers of las vegas" is raising money to pay for his surgery, which was about four thousand dollars. they say bandit's injury is serious, but they won't give up on him. eople are driving aggressivly... and now law enforcement is catching up to those who are reckless on the road. nevada highway patrol will join forces with other agencies for a campaign to catch speeding drivers. it started today, and runs through march seventh. speeding is a factor in a third of fatal crashes in our country. excessive speeding is considered aggressive driving, just like weaving in and out of traffic. but it's a habit most motorists don't believe is as risky. harper lee... the author of the timeless "to kill a mockingbird"... has died. the news struck a chord with the local cast performing the play... who took some time to reflect on the author today. " i think so many people find that parallel with their lives, that you feel like you know harper lee. in a way, it feels like someone in your family has passed. i believe that's where most of us are today."
