about the problem and a video showing them inside the lunchroom. fox5's les krifaton joins us live outside cashman middle school on desert inn near decatur. les what is the school district saying? they sent us a statement this afternoon saying school staff work diligently to keep the campus clean but the problem as you are about to see still exists. this is not what you want to see inside a school cafeteria...pigeons looking for and eating crumbs left behind by students. the school district says they pigeons get in when the janitorial staff are removing garbage. the district insists it makes sure the birds are not inside when the kids are there. family physician dr daliah wachs says the pigeons do pose a health risk and parents should remind their children about where they put their food when they are eating. whether you go to a restaurant, whether they eat in the room etc and so if the students themselves aren't going to wipe doe

area could have been contaminated by something the clark county health district says they haven't had any complaints about the pigeons in the school. if a parent wants to complain they should contact them the parent who shot the video is worried that the birds could trigger health issues for her daughter who had asthma. other parents we showed the video to said the birds rummaging around was disgusting the school district says in its statement "school staff work closely with the district's pest control staff to keep the birds at bay." with our amazing weather this weekend... you might think about driving over the hump to pahrump. and this is abercrombie's debut on the list. the company scored a 65 on the index-- almost 10 points below the entire sector's overall score. walmart ranked just ahead of abercrombie with a score of 66. nordstrom ranked as the most-like department store. j-c penney still attempting a turnaround... and its latest promotion has the store living up to its name. the company says it will start offering certain items in its private label collections for just one cent. the "penney days" promotion kicks off sunday... and will offer customers an arizona-branded item at full-price arizona item for a penny. the campaign runs all year with other items for a penny throughout the year. an investigation continues... after a deadly shooting rampage at a

the police chief in hesston, kansas is the person who chased and killed the gunman in a shooting rampage at a factory. three victims were killed... and 15 others injured... out of about 200 inside the factory at the time. matt finn has the latest on the investigation. authorities in kansas are still putting the pieces together following a shooting spree at a lawnmower factory here... the gunman has been identified as 38-year-old cedric ford... and police say he was served with a "protection from abuse" order about 90 minutes before the attack began. walton says: "cedric was armed with an assault rifle and automatic pistol. mr. ford who was residing in newton, kansas, has been

gets served, 5:00 we have the first shooting." it's unclear at this time what prompted the protection order - or the shooting... but records show ford has several prior offenses in florida and kansas stretching back at least a decade.... including arrests for brawling, burglary, and grand theft. law enforcement officials were aware of ford's violent history - and say the officer who shot and killed him is a hero. walton says: "understand that there's probably 2- 300 more people in that building while this is going on. this man was not going to stop shooting. the only reason he stopped shooting was because that officer stopped the shooter." but experts say no matter how quickly the police respond, there will still be casualties in an active shooter situation... unless employers start taking the threat posed by workplace violence more seriously. obama says: "congress may not have any apetite to do something about it but we need one that does. and as long as i hold this office i'm going to keep bringing this up, even if it's not getting the same attention that it should. about the protection order at this time... but has said it could have sparked this rampage. in hesston, kansas, matt finn, fox news. president obama says the nation cannot become numb to mass shootings - even as they occur about once a week in the united states. "we cannot become numb to this. anybody who says they want to keep the american people safe has to care about this because it's happening in far too many towns and effecting far too many innocent americans." the president says he spoke with the mayor of hesston to convey his sympathies. less than a week ago... a gunman killed six people in kalamazoo, michigan. now - a sheriff's deputy is explaining how the suspect was taken into custody - after seeing a car that matched the description. when he didn't stop right away it kind of brought my suspicions up a little bit, so i get out of the car, get our guns in the ready position, start giving verbal commands for the subject to display

window. after the first two attempts he has still not complied. the third time i yelled ot him to please put your hands outside the window, he did. at that time he started to reach back like he was going for his seatbelt i told him not to move his hands and politely helped him out of the car. the deputy had tailed the car for several miles... calling for backup... and waiting for the right time to pull it over. the suspect - jason dalton - didn't say anything during the arrest. "while patting the person down i did observe what appeared ot be a hand gun in his pocket, which i did take out of his pocket place it on the top of the vehicle." dalton remains behind bars... after appearing in court this week. he was an uber driver - who police say - appearing to be targeting people at random. a massachusetts teenager who was 14 when he raped and killed his math teacher - has been sentenced to life in prison. philip chism... who is now 17... will be eligibile for parole in 25 years. he was sentenced

murder of high school teacher colleen ritzer in 2013. the judge pronounced the sentence after hearing victim- impact statements from ritzer's parents, siblings and colleagues. many of them wore pink, her favorite color. antarctica. dozens on board are said to be safe. the aurora australis broke from its moorings and got grounded on rocks during a blizzard wednesday. the australian ship was carrying 68-passengers and crew at the time. they are all said to be safe. about 40 expeditioners were rescued and taken to land. the rest of the crew remained on board - to get the vessel floating again. they say no fuel leaked from the ship - but a full assessment on the vessel still needs to be done. nasa released a new image of pluto's north pole. the space agency's new horizons spacecraft took the photo. while the earth's north pole is known for its frozen temperatures-- pluto's north pole is covered in frozen canyons. you can see the canyons on the picture. they are the yellow parts in the image. the long canyons run vertically across the polar area. the largest one is about 45 miles wide and runs close to the north pole. a left-leaning polling firm that tacks amusing questions at the end of its surveys

sta-green fertilizer, at lowe's. breaking news ... a woman is severely injured after being hit by a car... and the crash has a major street shut down. i'm john huck. and i'm christine maddela. police are diverting drivers on warm springs.. making for an awful friday commute. both sides of warm springs are shut down from west of spencer toward eastern. emergency crews rushed the woman to university medical center with life threatening injuries. the driver did stay on the scene. now here's a live look at the traffic mess. you can see the backup from this angle on our

drivers headed east are having quite the time trying to get through. police are detouring them through a shopping center. we will keep an eye on this closure and alert you on our mobile app when it reopens. this next story and video is just troubling.. two men broke into a summerlin home in the middle of the night to steal valuables. take a look .. you can clearly see the men walking around the home.. it doesn't appear they even triggered an alarm. scary enough until you learn the people who live there.. were asleep when all of this was happening! this home is near north town center and canyon run drive .. and was outfitted with several working cameras. you can see the criminals using phone lights to check out items in the kitchen. one of them walked down the hallway to explore other rooms... again... while the family living there slept! this happened between midnight and two a-m last thursday night. if you recognize these men .. you can leave an anonymous tip by calling crime stoppers at 702-
