imagine losing a loved one to a brutal murder... and then being unable to retrieve their body. thats exactly what happened to one las vegas mans family... i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck, but some good news came down from the nation's capital today... that may have all of that changing. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg spoke with the family of keith goldberg who inspired a bill.... she joins us now live... keith goldberg was murdered and his body was dumped in the lake mead recreational area... but because of regulations... crews could not go in and get the body for more than a year... a lot of the efforts came out of red rock search and rescue's headquarters. today the u-s house of representatives passed a bill inspired by keith goldberg... his family says its a necessary change... hardy- is a common sense bypartisan solution to tear down the

preventing greiving familes from acheiving their closure congressman cresent hardy threw his support behind the joe heck's 'good samairtan seach and recovery act' friday on the house floor... david- its a win win for everyone how can it be wrong its a completely logical bill friday the bill was passed with unanimous support as an amendment to an existing law... it was inspired by a 2012 las vegas murder in which a love triangle turned deadly for keith goldberg . cell phone pings helped red rock search and rescue narrow in on where his body was located... but regulations stopped them being able to go in and retrieve it. david-had we had this in place when keith goldberg went missing we wouldve recovered him in may we started looking for him april 2012 by may we knew he was in because of all the able to get in until jeff goldberg- it was horrible no proof that he's really dead prior to the good samaritan search and rescue act... rock search and rescue... looking persons faced roadblocks and million dollar liabilities. the family says the

house is a small victory in a long and painful battle. they are now looking to the senate to also take action... the process of waiting to get his remains back and first finding him and now this whole thing with the house and senate its a waiting game while nothing can bring back their loved one... keith goldberg's brother tells fox 5 his legacy will save thousands of other families from the heartache they've endured. goldberg- its always a part of you you never get relieved of it but hearing today some action with his bill something to feel good about my brother cant come back i understand that red rock search and rescue spent hundreds of hours looking for goldberg... so for them this bill is deeply personal. something good came from it somethign good came from it yahoo in november of last year the senate committee on energy and natural resources approved the good samarian search and recovery act... clearing the way for action on the senate floor...

quickly on the matter... and it will be officially signed into law. reporting live cyndi lundeberg fox 5 news local las vegas. air force staff sergeant antonio tucker also inspired legislators to draft this bill. tucker drowned in lake mead in 2012. search teams had to wait nearly a year to get proper permits before they could search for his body. a man is shot several times in an alley behind a convenience store in downtown las vegas. a guest staying at a nearby hostel heard the gunshots and screams for help. "it looked like blood and then i saw him fall to ground." "it was relief when i saw he was still alive. took away a little bit of the terror of it." police say officers found the victim around 11-30 this morning near fremont and 14-th street. he was taken to u-m-c. no word yet on his condition. police say the gunman took off

so far -- there is no description of the suspect or getaway car. the property manager who shot and killed a man after police say he broke into a home... won't be charged in his death. police are calling it a case of self- defense. thursday afternoon the property manager-- grabbed his gun and his dog-- and came to check on the home...near flamingo and boulder highway after a locksmith called about an intruder. police say the manager thought he was in danger... after being punched several times in the face. ""if youre being punched if youre being attacked youre allowed to defend yourself and if youre are in a reasonable believe that serious bodily injury is going to occur youre allowed to use whatever force is necessary and often times thats deadly force." police and d-a wolfson do advise everyone first call police in a similar situation. a terrifying thought. burglaries in your home... while you and your family are asleep! that's exactly what happened at one valley home...

the crooks on camera. take a look-- it happened last week at a home near town center drive and canyon run-- police say the two men got into the home.... they could be seen walking from room to room police say they got away with several items. if you have any information on either of these suspects--- you are asked to call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. a pedestrian is critically injured after being hit by a car while in a marked crosswalk. police urge drivers and pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings. "our drivers also really need to pay attention. it's nice weather out here, people are going to be walking around, pay attention to what you're doing. definitely don't have your phones while you're driving, put those things away. turn them off if you have to, put them in the glove box! it's a distraction, you don't need it. it happened around three this afternoon on warm springs near eastern. police say the woman was taken to u-m-c in critical condition. the teenaged

police have not said if they will be charged. the speed limit on boulder highway was lowered in an effort to prevent deadly crashes. tropicana from broadbent went from 55 to 45 miles per hour. the entire 17-mile stretch is now one speed limit. today -- law enforcement were on the lookout for speeding drivers. police say almost a third of pedestrian deaths last year happened on boulder highway. "when you drive over speed limit or speeding it reduces reaction time and increases distant vehicle travels. it makes injuries more severe to whatever is getting hit or car youre running into. my main message is to slow down remember speed limit you don't get to go that fast. if its slower its ok." since the beginning of the new year -- several agencies have been looking for ways to keep boulder highway safe. the speed limit change is the first of several safety improvements planned for this year.

outraged after a video of pigeons taking over a school cafeteria goes viral. "the kids have to eat lunch in there. what if they go to the bathroom on the table and he gets it on his sandwich and he doesn't realize it. he could get sick." students say this is not the first time the birds have flown in to the cafeteria. the school frequently leaves the door open and the pigeons fly in to eat the crumbs left on the floor and tables. the cause for concern comes from the diseases the birds can carry. "they carry disease, they carry bacteria, they carry fungi, they carry viruses,

drivers can print out their registration... plate decal... and driver history. the kiosks also take cash now. a las vegas mans murder... is inspiring change on capitol hill. in 2011 keith goldberg was murdered... his body was dumped near the lake meade recreational area... cell phone pings alerted crews to where he was located... but governmnet regulations forbid them from retreiving it... fox 5s cyndi lundeberg has more on the good samartian search and recovery act... and how it could affect thousands of families... so the bill... if passed will directly help red rock search and rescue... they spent hundreds of hours searching for keith goldberg.. they knew where his body was but could not go and get it... the bill inspired by keiths murder passed the house today... it now sits before the senate... it will become a national law which will allow rescue crews quicker access

natural resources approved the good samaritan search and recovery act... clearing it for action on the senate floor. chrisopher and georgene ross were arrested for the murder of keith goldberg. christopher ross is serving four to 10 ears in prison... while goldberg's former girlfriend georgene was sentenced to two to six years. the nye county sheriff's office is issuing a warning... they are searching for a suspect--- who they say is armed and dangerous. take a look-- this is cody barnes. authorities say he tried to kill his girlfriend.. and then took off. the victim-- survived without injuries... anyone with information is asked to contact the nye county's sheriff's office at 775-751-7000. that number is also on the homepage of our website... fox5vegas.com. caught on camera... there is a pigeon problem-- inside a cashman middle school's cafeteria. fox five's les krifaton spoke with parents who are worried about the potential health issues the pigeons could cause. this is where you would expect to see pigeons out in a

this mom doesn't want to go on camera but says she was shocked when she walked through the the area and saw the birds absolutely this mom is concerned because her daughter has deaths and isn't sure close quarter exposure to the pigeons could cause problems i think that''s foul and i don't know how they are allowing that to happen. we reached out to the clark county school district about the matter. they sent us a statement that said quote"school staff work closely with the districts pest keep the birds at bay." end quote but students we talked to on and off camera say the birds are there almost all the time when i'm eating lunch i see them flying through the keep the doors open fly in they do nothing about the out admit that quote staff are cleaning the cafeteria after lunch and have the remove trash, pigeons do fly in to eat crumbs or food that have been dropped on the floor by students." the boys mom we talked to heard

district and asked if they had heard of the problem and whether they had received any complaints. they hadn't and for them to investigate--a complaint has to be filed. five people are dead after a shooting-- and a standoff at a washington state home. the mason county sheriff's office says a man called 9-1-1 saying he had shot his family and to kill himself. to the property they negotiated for hours-- he then walked outside the home in front of authorities. when police entered the house- they found four people dead. a 12-year-old girl related to the suspect survived . the gunman behind a deadly shooting spree in kansas had been served a protection order by a harvey county sheriff's deputy about an hour and a half before his rampage. cedric ford killed three people and wounded 16 others yesterday.... after being served the papers at work. authorities are still combing through the evidence... they say ford ak- 47 style rifle and a glock handgun.

"65-percent of the water portion of the water and sewer bill you shouldn't have to pay for. we did an analysis to say if you looked at the human consumption part of the water that people use, it's about half, and we rounded up to 65 percent to say let's be safe. chase... trying to capture a unicorn-- that was on the run. the unicorn is actually a white pony-- name juliette who makes a living posing for pictures. while at a juliette got spooked and escaped. the pony ran for the road.... and police were soon flooded with calls for a unicorn sighting. the police chase lasted three hours. the unicorn reminded us of another story--- that was happening this time last year... llama drama... two llamas were on the run on the streets of sun city arizona. the llamas were working as therapy animals at a retirement community when they escaped. it took hours to catch the animals. twitter exploded-- with the hashtag-- llamas on the loose. the hbo movie "behind the candelabra" was a huge hit.... and introduces people to liberace who may not have been familiar with him.... now some of the costumes... are on display right here in las vegas.

interest in the life and legacy of "mister showmanship" -- liberace. the movie created a cavalcade of other things because it created a younger audience. but, as the gatekeeprs of liberace's legacy -- the liberace foundation was unsure whether the movie would help or hurt liberace's image. we weren't sure what kind of effect it would have and it was controversial and it's known as the ex-boyfriend story and it's eight years of his life. it's not a biopic. however some hollywood insiders assured the foundation that it would not want to distance itself from the film. because of the fact that the cast.. they found our who it would be.. would not let it be as selacious as perhapse the script indicated.
