district address. fox5's les krifaton joins us live from the newsroom with more on his address. for a school district that doesn't rank very high nationally there has been plenty of progress under the leadership of superintendent pat skorkowsky. his state of the district address gave him plenty to brag about today. i am going to bring out the newest edition of the cimarron- memorial memorila family and that is the queen of hearts so can we bring out the queen of hearts? if this robot built by cimarron students is any indication things are looking up for the school district. pat skorkowsky was more than excited to brag about this accomplishment to start his state of the district address. out of 646 teams and 34 countries we had the number 2 robotics team in the country. his theme this year is leaping forward and that's what he said happened over the past year. 3 ccsd schools were named by the u.s. department of education as being among the top 335 schools in the country. the ranking is based on academic achievement. the only district that had more

miami-dade in southern florida. among the other accomplishments, improving college readiness and the graduation rate from 2014. looking ahead, skorkowsky wants to build on past successes. he says one way to do that is to provide more learning for children at the kindergarten level thanks to some help from the state. finally every student in the student in the state of nevada will have a full day of kindergarten experience which is huge. thanks to state funding those full day classes will begin later this year along with other programs that include hiring more and attracting better quality teachers with higher pay starting at $40,000 a year. we're actually going out to teachers who have 1 to 3 years of experience and teachers that have 29 plus years experience and actually getting them because those are the teachers who would be willing to move as for his vision for the next school year continue to improve reading proficiency, diminishing the achievement gap, increasing the graduation rates, getting family and the community more involved in their neighborhood schools, continuing to improve student safety and happiness and

and while we have seen alot of improvements under pat skorkowsky the ccsd ranks low compared to other districts across the country, but at least it's moving in the right direction. it seems like school board members like skorkowsky's progress... last week they gave him a new two year contract a southern highlands preparatory school teacher who pleaded guilty to sending inappropriate texts to one of his students - is now facing new charges .. involving a student at jack lund schofield middle school.. a different location where he was also a long term sub. that's where fox 5's ophelia young is tonight with the story. that's right... ryne brinks worked here at schofield middle school before southern highlands prep. after a parent learned about brinks first charges - they called ccsd police - and another 13

porn. three months after being bailed out of jail for his first case - ryne brinks was behind bars again in january of this year - this time for more serious charges. after hearing about the first case on the news - a mother and her 13 year old daughter attending schofield middle school came out saying brinks had a four month relationship with her too. the student told police brinks began with messaging her on instagram on the last day of school last year - and that the messages eventually became sexual. the girl admitted she and brinks exchanged photos and videos of different body parts, including his penis. she also explained how brinks would inappropriately touch himself in phone conversations with her. the girl admitted telling each other they loved each other multiple times.

suddenly stopped contacting her around the time he started a new job at southern highland prep academy - thats when she told police she realized he used her in quote any way that he really could, he wanted to use as much of me that he could in the time he had so he did it." apparently at southern highlighds - brinks had moved on - texting another 13 year old - a charge to which he pleaded guilty this week. the las vegas township justice court explains - in exchange for that guilty plea - the pornography charges related to the schofield middle school student may be dropped. fox 5 visited the address listed under ryne brinks name to speak with family. "knock" nobody was home. brinks is scheduled for sentencing june 8th. in interviews with police - brinks admitted the relationship with the girl at southern highlands was inappropriate but didnt think it was illegal. the arrest report with the girl here at schofield middle school - did not include comments from

repportingl ive. southern highlands prep academy fired brinks in early october. the parent from schofield middle school approached police later that month. the driver accused of d-u-i in a deadly crash on boulder highway last year pleads guilty. 22-year-old seong lee pleaded guilty to two counts of d-u-i resulting in death. police say he was behind the wheel in the march 5th crash that killed 18-year-old gabriell thomas and 17-year-old kamesha gilmore. in the arrest report, lee admitted to drinking several beers before driving. he was also out on bond for another d-u-i charge. a judge says lee will not be eligible for probation. he's due back in court the middle of april. new tonight at six.. hundreds of construction workers have walked off the job at the tesla motors manufacturing plant east of reno .. this according to their union. they are protesting the increased hiring of out-of-state workers for less pay.

spokesman says approximately 350 plumbers, carpenters, electricians and others walked. one worker said the work is increasingly being done by crews for a non-union, new mexico-based company. tesla said in a statement it's in compliance with state requirements. it's nascar week here in the valley .. and there are a few events and one major change you need to know about.. first .. the change. according to the las vegas motor speedway .. there will not be a hauler parade down the strip this year. in a statement, the speedway says this is because the trucks are coming in from atlanta. there are several family fun things going on at the speedway. on wednesday, speedway children's charities is hosting a driver and memoriabilia auction. up through saturday you can pay to take part in the richard petty driving experience. and then before sunday's big race, you can walk the track! for die-hard fans-- you can also check out stratosphere pole day on friday. the boyd gaming 300 is on saturday. and as we mentioned, the big kobalt 400 is sunday.

average highs range from 66 to 68 this week and through the weekend. closed captioning will resume shortly a u.s. navy seal was awarded the medal of honor this morning. u.s senior chief special warfare operator edward byers is only the fifth navy seal to receive the award. back in 2012, byers helped with the rescue of an american civilian being held hostage by the taliban in afghanistan. the pentagon says he used hand-to-hand

used his own body to shield the hostage. but the rescue also resulted in the death of a member of the navy's seal team six. byers performed c-p-r on his teammate for 40 minutes in an attempt to save him. a frightning scene in denver as a truck dangled over the edge of an interstate above a cold river. police say it appears the driver swerved to try to avoid hitting something in the road and instead went up and over the wall. the driver was able to get himself out of the vehicle and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. but police did ticket the driver for careless driving. a google self- driving car struck a municipal bus in a minor crash - in what may be the first case of one of the company's autonomous cars hitting another vehicle. the self-driving car was being tested by google when it hit the bus on valentine's day. google has been testing s-u-v's near its silicon valley headquarters. google wrote its car was trying to get around some sandbags on a city street when its left front struck

the bus. google added its car's safety driver thought the bus would yield. no one was injured. hulk hogan's lawsuit against web site gawker over a sex tape went to trial today in florida. hogan is suing gawker media for 100-million dollars for publishing part of a sex tape in 2012. hogan's legal team argues gawker violated hogan's privacy by publishing the footage and initially refusing to take it down. the clip was taken down under a court order. tough-guy actor george kennedy, who won an oscar for his role in the 1960s classic "cool hand luke," has died. his grandson says kennedy died yesterday of old age in boise, idaho where he moved with his late wife in 2002. after the success of "cool hand luke," kennedy became one of hollywood's most recognizable supporting actors. among other memorable films he was in were the "naked gun" spoofs and "airport."

at a high school near cleveland- ohio left four students injured. witnesses say someone opened fire inside madison high school's cafeteria. a local sheriff's official says two male students, 14 and 15 years old, were hit by gunfire. another two were injured by shrapnel or trying to escape. all four are expected to recover. police arrested a 14-year-old boy.. but have not release a motive. the catholic church sex abuse scandal thrown back into the spotlight with a vatican official speaking out. a big admission from a top vatican official. an australian cardinal says the catholic church made errors concerning its sex abuse scandal... telling a government commission investigating the priestly abuse of children he was not testifying to quote, "defend the indefensible." george cardinal pell / vatican treasurer and australia's highest ranking catholic "the church has made enormous mistakes and is working to remedy those, but the church in many places, certainly in australia, has

the scandal is highlighted by the film "spotlight," which details a boston globe investigation into the abuse of children by priests. "spotlight" won two oscars at the academy awards last night, including best picture. a new cnn/orc poll shows donald trump and hillary clinton are ahead in their respective republican and democratic contests. in fact, 70-percent of the people polled said trump and clinton are now likely to earn their party's presidential nominations. scott mclean takes a look at the race and breaks down the latest numbers. a day before super tuesday, marco rubio is giving donald trump a taste of his own medicine, calling him a con man with a spray tan and small hands.
