area our cameras captured one person being taken away by henderson fire ambulance henderson and clark county fire were both in that araa it's unclear exactly what happened there but this all started after eight with a few thousand losing power now more than 13- thousand without power and at the target shoppers still able to go around thanks to backup generators "it's really dark, its like pitch black and nothings on, and usually there's like 30,000 lights, and you can't see anything" most of the outages are in the 89122... with more than seven thousand and then a few thousand in the 89014 and 89011 zip codes a lot of street lights were out as we made our way down here remember r you're to treat those as a four way stop
10:01 pm
reporting live ew ffn llv nv energy says an accident at the substation cuased the outage. in just the first two months of this year... 28 people were killed in metro police jurisdiction alone... nearly 3- hundred people assaulted with a deadly weapon.... and almost 5- hundred people robbed. metro is calling this a spike in violent crimes... and the are not really sure why its happening. tonight... fox5's miguel martinez- valle has more on a violent stabbing that happened earlier this evening... but first we go to fox 5s cyndi
10:02 pm
us now live in the newsroom... with more details for us... john chrstine... we spoke with officers about the recent rash of violent crimes... there was even another home invasion just hours ago near sahara and nellis... officers tell me the public can play a huge part in keeping these crime down. hadfield - statistically speaking we are having a lot more violence in las vegas we are up 80 pecent homicides up 18 percent in robberies in our violent crimes categories are spiking its unacceptable sexual assaults and assaults using a deadly weapon are also up this year... las vegas metro police tell us they are not sure what's causing the spike in violent crimes... this is 28 people who have died in our jurisdiction regardless of what type of criminal activity or not thats familes affected thats neighborhoods affected those are victims of crimes in just the first two months of 2016 there have also been just under 500 robberies equaling about 8 per day...that
10:03 pm
includes an alarming number of home invasions.... like this one from a home near town center drive and canyon run. home invasion is a crime we dont know a lot about because msot agencies across do not record them officially burglaries or home invasions offenders are looking for certain vulnerabilities dr. bill souza a criminal justice professor at unlv... specializes in neighborhood crime.. he says the numbers shouldnt cause alarm just yet. to determine if this is a trend we need comparison data to go back a little ways crime does ebb and flow to some extent metro tells us the public can play a huge role in stopping these crimes.... they are encouraging everyone if you see something report it. we are working diligently on solving this issue we have a couple tactics were using however we cant do it with the publics assistance
10:04 pm
talking to metro today they also encouraged people to use their cell phones... take pictures of a car that you dont recognize... if you can snap a picture of someone suspicious in your neighborhood. they say when people do that it often solves multiple crimes at once... and helps investigators place the criminals at multiple spots. reporting live cyndi lundeberg fox 5 news local las vegas. metro says when they make an arrest often times it helps cut back on similiar crimes... as the individuals are typically involved in a string of instances. they say thats why its so important for the public to speak out... and help them make these arrests. metro police are also spending time in crime- prone areas... to focus on prevention one example is a neibhborhood where a violent stabbing happened earlier tonight. fox5s miguel martinez-valle is live at metro headquarters... and miguel... the stabbing actually happened in front of a camera metro
10:05 pm
i am here on sunrise in the neighborhood where todays stabbing took place the neighborhood has a reputation for crime, so much so that metro decided to put this mobile survelillance camera on the streets to keep on eye on things, however it seems that today the camera did not serve as a detterent like they intended according to police, the stabbing started as an argument between two women in front of the home... they then took the argument to the street.. thats where one of the women stabbed the other in the chest... what police dont know is what caused the argument or the womens relation to each other... they say the woman stabbed is critical and not expected to survive. the whole conflict took place in front of the very thing metro installed to make the neighborhood safe. " " we expect it to be a deterent as much as it is to get evidence from, but obviously in this case the emotions must have been high and that person did not take this into account when they commited

infront of the camera practically." " police say while the camera didnt stop the crime this time around, it will help quickly wrap up the case. they have witnesses, the suspect, and surveillance video in order to determine what exactely happened... and neighbors say since the cameras have been up-- crime has gone down. "we feel safer when play. now that the cameras are on. " lietenant dan mcgrath also said he has not had to come to the neighborhood for a homicide since july 2015... hey says that shows the camera is at least partly working. live, mmv, ffn,ll metro surveillance camera's are set up in different

(only voice over chickens) "choop choop" sam b good is a self proclaimed prepper. he left the neon lights of las vegas a year ago... "come here girls choop choop come and get it" for this quiet hundred acre ranch in the middle of nowhere, southern utah. "its just the risks to me it just wasnt worth it anymore." a former military weapons expert and who also worked for intelligence, sam carries a list clark county has compiled - of the largest threats to the las vegas valley. "number one is pandemic." vegas is most prone to a disease outbreak - likely caused by international visitors. next on the list - flash flooding. which leads to sams next concern - there are only three major highways and freeways

the valley "there just really arent enough exit doors and you know what traffic is like in vegas on a normal day when theres a wreck on the spaghetti bowl it ties things up can you imagine if everybodys in a panic and this is one of my expressions - americans dont panic well." so sam - got away from those americans. now he, his wife and 12 year old daughter can live off the grid self sustained for years. "shots." of course they have their own own shooting range - but sam says even then - his ranch isn't safe. in case people bombard it - hes made hundreds of these caltrops "in case i need to spread them on the road to keep people from coming up my driveway." defense doesn't stop there - if attackers finally reach you... "if you stay upright im controlling you i can do what i want to you but if i got low if i grabbed you and you dropped." protecting his wife and daughter from crime was another reason sam left las vegas. the first thing he tells them to do if their abducted - stay low to stay on your feet. if that doesn't work - "scream" you end up stuffed in a trunk. "get in get in there shut up shut up. trunk closes." stand up: all cars sold in the us are equipped with a glow in the dark

"oh all right okay im free." if the tab if nowhere to be found - punch out the tail lights - wave your arm. now if youre hands are tied - "you want to go down and out fast and hard." "now this keychain might look cute but itll gouge your eyes out since you always have your keys on you once suggestion attach personal protection." from a kidnapping to the apocalypse - this family is equipped. "nat wind blowing looking over property..." no matter how much the extra food - the rocket burner - the solar stove - and panels cost - to sam - being ready is priceless. "a couple people i know that say youre paranoid youre waiting for bad things to happen and my response is im not waiting for bad things to happen i know bad things will happen and they happen all the time and if youre prepared its just the news..." oy f5n llv
