courtroom to hear the sentencing. fox 5s cyndi lundeberg joins us now from outside where adair was sentenced... with more on the familys reactions... today in court kadar browns mother read a statement to the judge. she said her son used to live with her.. helped pay the bills... and also lvoed to work on and collect mustang cars. she told the courtroom today that to this day... whenever kadar browns dog hears the sound of a mustang... he runs ot the window and looks for his owner. bunny roman, victim's sister, - and ever since he's been gone, i'm lost. i'm cold. even though bunny roman visibly shook while talking about her brother kadar brown...she still made a point to stare at the man resposible for killing him. in march 2014 gary adair hit brown while brown was changing a tire on he 95 near summerlin. adair told police he had been using

drugs. nats- he admitted to being a daily user of heroine in court tuesday morning... adair found out his fate. the state has asked for this court to impose 4-10 years in the nevada doc before the sentence was handed down... adair read a statement... saying since the crash... he's worked to improve his life... and has remained sober. i pray for his family's forgiveness. three of browns family members plead with the judge for a stiff sentence. browns uncle was one of them.. and says the night his nephew was killed he actually drove up on the crash charles hager victim's uncle- for him to be hit, and his body to be ran under that vehicle and drug down the highway, it's a memory that i'll never forget last year the case made national headlines when browns mother punched adair in the face... lindona (lin- dawn-uh) thompson- my name is lindona thompson thompson was charged with battery and was fined 100 dollars. in court thompson told the judge the loss of her son has had rippling efects in her life.. lindona (lin- dawn-uh) thompson- my home and my

kadar brown... no sentence would have been enough... they describe brown him as a goofy man with an infectous laugh... who they say in this moment... would encourage them... to forgive his killer. lindona thompson- he wants us to forgive and move on i know he does but thats easie said than done when we caught up with kadar browns family after the sentencing... they told me they dont believe that gary adair is truly sorry... they believe he kept dates back to give himself longer to get sober. however they say tonight theyre thankful... its all finally over. cl ffnll. gary adair has already served 228 days in jail... so he

days in jail... so he will get credit for time served as part of the four year sentence. adair was also ordered to pay 5- thousand dollars. and when he's releaed... he'll have to have a breathalyzer installed in his car. a man accused of sexually assaulting a hotel employee has been arrested. police were able to find 22-year-old ivon major after concerned citizens tipped off detectives. police say the suspect sexually assaulted an employee in a guest's room saturday night - boulder highway and desert inn. he ran off when another worker came in. two adults and a family pet were able to escape their burning home through a back window with neighbors help. the fire happened around five p-m near fourth street and las vegas boulevard. las vegas fire and rescue says the flames blocked the door... and the adults and a dog were able to go out a back window. firefighters were able to control the fire in minutes... but it did spread to another home. no one was hurt.

not been released yet... but careless smoking could not be ruled out. and another fire happened a few hours later in henderson. here's video of the flames sent from our fox five viewer. henderson fire department says the fire was coming from the garage. crews were able to knock it down quickly. those living inside the home were able to safely escape... and are receiving help from the american red cross. no one was hurt. more than a hundred-thousand dollars will go to voucher-style education program in nevada. the nevada board of examiners is allowing the attorney general's office to spend the money on an outside law firm called "bancroft associates". the firm has already received more than 400- thousand dollars from nevada. last month -- supreme court justices heard arguments on whether to lift a hold on the education savings account program. it allows parents to use public education money for private school tuition. opponents say the program is

mountain ridge became the u-s champions two years ago. the team was defeated in the u-s title game by a team from chicago... but that championship was rescinded -- after an investigation showed the team's leadership had violated little league rules -- by recruiting players from outside their zoned boundaries. new tonight. we're hearing from the las vegas hockey team owner bill foley about an important call that's going to happen tomorrow -- regarding the team's name. foley's early favorite for team name was "black knights"... but today he told sportbook radio's "brian blessing" he has ruled out this name... and he's settled on four to pick from. "the name is going to have that kind of, knights somewhere in some fashion in some way or there's one particular animal or bird we have available to us that we might use. we have some breaking news. shots fired during a peaceful protest in ferguson, missouri. this comes on the second anniversary of michael brown's death... who was shot and killed by a police officer. we want to warn you -- some may find this video distburing. "nats of gunfire, screaming" witnesses told the "associated press" that a car sped through protesters blocking a street. the car hit a young man... witnesses say he flew into the air and his shoes were knocked off. gunfire broke out as the car drove off. the victim was taken to the hospital. police responded to the scene... but say so far there is no evidence that someone was struck. in kansas... a ten-year-old boy is killed while

tallest water slide. police say caleb schwab died from a neck injury. it happened on the 168-foot tall water slide in kansas city -- which is about 17 stories tall. it can propel riders at speeds of at least fifty miles an hour. caleb is the son of a kansas state legislator. the park is closed while police investigate. the tragedy in kansas has many questioning how other water parks are kept safe. fox five's eric hilt has more on the regulations at our local water parks. splash down the slides at cowabunga bay... nats ...parents say safety is their biggest concern. "i want to make sure that i'm safe but also that my boys are safe when we come...don't run, listen to lifeguards, and they have to make sure they're close to mommy" but while parents like jessica are taking precautions -- we went to find out what laws there are to help ensure safety...and found out in southern nevada -- there aren't any government regulations.

amusement parks and attractions...nevad a is one of just a handful of states with no laws that regulate amusement parks... and while clark county requires routine inspections of rides like roller coasters -- cowabunga bay general manager shane huish told me water slides fall outside of the law nats -- water "amusement rides such as roller coasters fall under amusement devices, water slides fall under attractions" so the individual parks are responsible to make sure every slide safe for riders -- a reponsibililty huish tells me he takes very inspecting slides every day before the park opens. "we also hire an independent third party company that comes in and they do independent random visits to the park, so we never know when they're coming...they've come out twice so far and we've passed with an elite status" along with the random and routine inspections there are clear guidelines and warnings for guests -- including scales to make sure riders meet height and weight requirements. "we have height checks and every guard goes through a safety schpiel before the guests get on the slides, so they know what the

safety checks that many parents say make them feel safe on the slides. eric hilt fox five las vegas the general manager of cowabunga bay -- shane huish -- says the ride in kansas city is much more extreme than any of the slides in las vegas. he also notes that while slides are not regulated or inspected by government agencies... the water quality is regularly tested. hundreds of delta flights were ca after a massive system glitch. the airline says the system is operating... but it's still slower than usual. delta says they do not have a final analysis on what caused the outage... but it could cost them tens of millions of dollars. delta expects some cancellations and delays tomorrow... before they are fully reset. the airline has apologized for the outage... and offered 200- dollar travel vouchers to anyone impacted more than three hours. the federal aviation administration is looking to hire thousands of air traffic

leadership conference had another successful year of empowering ladies. "you have the strength inside of you that you can tap into and become a bigger, better person. not only for yourself but for other people" the conference was hosted by c- n-n's natalie allen and featured several inspirational speakers. there were also workshops that focused on developing leadership skills. one thousand tickets were sold.

charity that supports woman and girls. birthday parties are a big deal for kids. and some police officers in oklahoma save the day for a three- year-old autistic boy -- after making a surprise appearance at his party. joleen chaney has the touching story. you can't always understand what he says... ...but some words.... he's got down pat. wrapped inside his tiny hands.... a police car. and while little brayden's party decorations will one day be taken down... but not in his family's heart. with dark red spots on their shoulders and backs. it's called "cupping therapy". round glass suction cups are warmed... then placed on sore parts of the body. the ancient therapy is mostly used in middle eastern and asian countries -- especially china. recently -- the bruise-like marks were spotted on american swimmer michael phelps. athletes say the therapy relieves pain and prevent injuries. cupping is not just for olympians and professional athletes. it's becoming a popular technique... and boosting business here in the valley. "ever since phelps had cupping marks on his back. phones ringing off hook. everyone asking about cupping and hes 19 winner of olympics and if he can win 19 with cupping he must be doing something right." researchers say it's unclear if cupping actually works. although many athletes say it's helped... researchers say it's hard to draw firm conclusions on limited data.
