this is fox5 news at 6. local. las vegas there were major delays on us-95 on the west side of the valley today as two crashes leave five people injured. one of them in critical condition. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. first... a live look from our traffic camera on the 95 at durango. a crash earlier this afternoon led to the closure southbound lanes for a while as a helicopter landed to fly an injured person to the hospital. right now -- the scene is clearing up... fox 5's abby theodros was at this scene and tells us what happened.. captioning will resume shortly. captioning will resume shortly. captioning will

the driver of this station wagon was injured when they rolled over on the northbound lanes near valley view. this crash happened around one this afternoon. a hit-and-run driver says he left the scene of a deadly crash because he was afraid. that's according to metro police. the crash happened around 5-30 a-m near sahara and eastern. police say the driver of a red pick-up truck hit a pedestrian that was in or near the crosswalk... then took off. a road worker picking up cones found the pedestrian's body... then called 9-1-1. police say the driver returned to the scene an hour later. "i understand people scared probably really shocking even to driver of car but right thing to do is immediately pull attempt to render aid and notify law enforcement call 911. who knows if individual may have survived this collision having pulled over and immediately call services. i dont know and we'll never know..."

driver of the truck passed sobriety tests... but he was arrested for leaving the scene. another pedestrian was killed around eleven last night near boulder highway and nellis. witnesses told police the driver of a car had a green light... and a pedestrian crossed on a "don't walk" sign. police say the driver did not see the pedestrian... and struck him. the pedestrian died at the scene. the driver stayed... and cooperated with police. police say speed is not fa three suspects arrested in the gruesome deaths of two people in an east las vegas neighborhood. last november -- police say the suspects tied several people up inside a home... then set it on fire. fox five's spoke to those living in the neighborhood about the arrests. "it's, it's great. it's amazing. and i'm so glad, i really am. relief in this east las vegas neighborhood -- now that police say three people connected to two gruesome murders are now behind bars. away and i hope they stay there" on tuesday, malik watson was arrested and charged with 13 different crimes including murder, attempted murder, arson and kidnapping. darrin wilder and hakim blanche- jones have also been arrested...and are facing the same list of charges. they're accused of tying several people up inside an east las vegas home, and then setting it on fire. "in the months since, the house has been torn down, all that remains is this concrete foundation, but neighbors say even though the house is gone, the memories of what happened here will stay with them forever" "when i look out the window i going to see the house on fire again, its something that stays with you" on november 16 of last year this house near lamb and charleston went up in flames... outside the burned out home, first responders found two women with severe burns and a man with stab wounds and tied up with zip ties. inside, 45-year-old mario jiminez was found dead. three months later his 27-year- old daughter angelica would die from her burns. "to know what those people went through and them being tortured, its horrible, it shouldn't happen to anybody"

neighbors on edge for months... but now these arrests are bringing some comfort. it happened around eleven this morning - when the landscaper of an unknown company was trimming the fronds on a palm tree at a home near washington and rancho. luis rodriguez was working with a separate tree triming company near the situation and says he'll never forget the look on the man's face. luis rodriguez: he looked like he was in a very hard situation trying to get down. rodriguez lent his company's man lift to fire officials and a few short hours later he was rescued. fire chief (deputy) eddie vigil vee-hil says the fire department sees at least 12 tree rescues each year...many of them involve landscapers for hire. eddie vigil,fire chief: they're reaching up and cutting and those fronds slip down, or it breaks away and comes down on their chest because they're attached to a tree with a harness..theyre upper torso gets bent backwards and they have all this weight on their chest and they cant move vigil says even if you're a professional... deputy chief eddie vigil veehil: it can happen. usually the company that come out do a very good job. very professional about trimming the trees, but its very common for us. at f5n llv

metro police are asking for your help tonight.. take a good look at this man. police say he robbed an employee at gunpoint at a store along the strip near spring mountain last week on wednesday. according to the police, the man confronted an employee and theatened to shoot them if they didn't give them money. the employee did and the man took off... eventually getting into a cab and leaving the area.

the "veterans in care initiative" kicked off today and fox5's peter dawson was on hand for the special ceremony and to see the first veterans pinned as nevada's heroes. today isn't a national holiday, it's just a typical summer day for many of us but inside lake mead health and rehab a tradition was born. "on behalf of governor sandoval thank you for your service to our nation and please accept this certificate as our small token of gratitude." "thank you on behalf of governor sandoval to our nation and to our state." "thank you for your service sir." "i can't tell you how much your state appreciates your service. i mean we may not say it all the time, you may not hear it all the time but what you did was special and we appreciate you and your service." "very special. it's very important to recognize, life should be shared and recognized." "it's recognizing their service to our community to our nation and the sacrifice them and their families made. so it's special it's just their day."

nevada department of veterans services presented certificates and a special pin to fifteen veterans. these men and women are the first to be pinned nevada's heroes, a title hundreds more will receive in an ongoing quest by ndvs to recognizes each and every veteran living in care facilities. "makes you feel proud. thank you for your services and welcome to the club." all of the nevada heroes i spoke with are humble and won't acknowledge their service this country as bravery, to them it wasn't just the righ thing to do but it was also a privilege. "they are humble but it still means something to them. we have veterans from vietnam who never got thanked, now is there chance to thank them." living at mira loma to pin 37 veterans as nevada's heroes. currently 900 veterans live in care facilities throughout our state. august means back to school... and back to school means getting your kids shots updated. "there is shot clinics all over the valley. this weekend there is... the malls have done them. last weekend was galleria, this weekend is the meadows mall, next weekend boulevard mall and then downtown summerlin." parents can bring their pre- schoolers... kindergartners and 7-th graders to any public health center to get their shots. the only thing you need to bring is your child's current immunization records. the southern nevada health district suggests doing it as soon as possible to beat the rush. bus drivers... school police... teacher aides... kitchen and office staff members all came together to protest against the school district. "support staff matters! support staff matters! support staff matters!"

demanding higher wages and better treatment. some say they haven't received a raise since 20-08. they also claim their union is not supportive. c-c-s-d released a statement saying they understand the needs of the support staff. they plan to meet with the "education support employees association" to discuss the problem.
