live from las vegas fox5 news at 6 starts now. complaints were made... but nothing could be done. was a squatter's death in a fire -- preventable? several families lose everything... after an early morning fire destroys multiple units of a valley condo complex. we have a look at the damage. closed captioning wi this is fox5 news at 6. local. las vegas a body is found in an east las vegas home after an early morning house fire. i'm john huck. i'm cyndi lundeberg -- in for christine. neighbors say squatters have lived in the home for years and that fire could have been prevented. fox5's eric hilt is

near sahara and lamb - with the latest. neighbors say squatters have been in and out of this home for years and they knew something bad could happen they say the house has been vacant for about three years now -- but squatters moved in shortly after the homeowners moved out. neighbors say they have filed code complaints and called metro police several times, but nothing ever seemed to get done. they say it was very frustrating because they knew that something bad like this fire could happen. "a lot of people are expecting the police department to do something, becuase i dont wan any more homes go up in flames, bad enough we had this one here so close!" metro told me a vacant house is still somebody's property... and it's very hard to deal with squatters if they can't track down that homeowner. without the homeowner to let them in, they're powerless

this isn't the only house with squatters... neighbors say it's fire near twain and valley view sends a woman and firefighter to the hospital. neighbors tell fox five the damage from the fire is a total loss.... vince sapienza spoke with a couple who barely made it out in time... eight adults and four children are left without homes tonight after crews spent five hours knocking down flames at the shadow woods condiminiums... neighbors i spoke too are still obviously shook up from the day.. but just happy no one was hurt.... "grabbed my wallet, my phone, my dog, my wife, then out the door, nothing else i could do, it was moving that fast." randall pochmara and his wife woke

"somebody yelled something, my wife went out the door and they said fire." four units at the shadow woods condominiums are being called a total loss. fire crews say the cause is still under investigation. but the fire started in the apartment on the top floor next to randalls. "my mom noticed smoke and could smell it, came outside and saw smoke up from the roof, her and my dad got out." the family says they got out, but randalls wife, who has cancer, was sent to the hospital for smoke inhilation. "she's having chest pains and everything else, they took her to make sure because she just got done with a round of radiation, so they want to make sure nothing else is going wrong." one firefighter was also sent to the hospital after a roof tile fell on his head. "he's doing good, the tile came off, he was doing some work, caught him in the head, minor, small laceration, seems to be doing pretty good." fire officials say this was called a "high" level strucutre fire. and took nearly five hours to knock down. over a dozen engines responded with

"fires can move so quick in these apartment complexes, we want to get ahead of it, we frontload our calls and personel to make sure we're ready to go." crews say the damage incurred on the top floors is just fire. while the two bottom units have smoke and water damage. "just life i guess, it could have been worse, if we were in asleep, we would have never, it would have engulfed us before we got up." "now it's start over again, what can i do, i got her, i got my dog, got my kids, what else could i need." now according to randall... the arson investigator said the cause may have come from between the walls.... but again... clark county fire department have not given a reason and say it is still under investigation....

stepped in to help those without a place to live - after the fire. you can make a donation online. look in our links page - at fox five vegas dot com. historic flooding in louisiana has left six people dead. more than 20- thousand people have been rescued from their homes. heavy rain started to fall on friday -- in and around baton rouge. some places have been hit with more than two feet of rain. the state's governor -- john bel edwards -- says thousands of homes that have never flooded are underwater. more than eleven-thousand people are in shelters president obama has declared a major disaster in the state. a volunteer from the american red cross in las vegas will deploy to louisiana tomorrow morning. she will work with nurses to tend to flood victims. "i welcome chance to use skills to help people out with any health services need they might have." tere shannon says she expects to stay in louisiana for two weeks. you can help those affected by the flooding by donating. we have the link to the red cross on fox five vegas

a gunman is still on the run after two people were killed outside the silver nugget casino. it happened around four a-m on north las vegas boulevard near civic center. north las vegas police say two men were shot to death in the parking lot... and many people were there when the shots were fired. police say a shooter or shooters have not been identified. they are looking for witnesses to tell them what happened. if you know anything about this shooting -- call police right away or leave a tip crimestoppers. that number is 7- 0-2-3-8-5-55-55. new at six... good neighbors share... but some neighbors in henderson are wondering about one guy who seemed to help himself to another person's property. you can see in this surveillance video from this morning .. the man casually walks up to a house without shoes or a shirt... smoking a cigarette... and takes a child's football cleats that were left outside to dry! it happened at a neighborhood near burkholder and racetrack. we spoke with the homeowner who is

basic high school... who says he hopes it doesn't get worse than stolen cleats. "i kind of want to show mercy for the guy. but at same time i hope its not people trying to stake out neighborhood. set up to go into house. this is bad neighborhood to do that too." "a lot of people in henderson community and at football games were tight. we look out for one another." we also spoke to another neighbor who tells us this man has been seen around the neighborhood lately and other people have had so he is working to set up a neighborhood watch with more neighbors. and just in the last hour - a neighbor tells us police have arrested the man seen in this video. buildings at the iconic riviera hotel and casino will be imploded overnight. it's planned for two in the morning and will bring down the monte carlo wing and the iconic glass covered building in the front. this is video from the last implosion of the monaco tower around two months ago. many locals and visitors watched this demolition at surrounding parking garages on the strip. the las vegas convention and visitors authority bought the property to expand its convention center. "the convention industry is extremely cometative, cities like chicago, orlando and new orleans and san diego and san francisco are after our business. they would love to take the business away from las vegas and a number of teose facilities are expanding with billion dollar plus expansion plans so we need to make sure we stay ahead of teh industry and stay number one."

title max has been ordered by nevada to stop issuing a loan extension option. the state says the option is illegal. the repayment process would force customers to pay more money in interest than on their principal loan amount. nevada issued a cease and desist order against the nationwide company. the auto title lender is also being fined more than 300-thousand dollars... and must refund customers who had a grace period payments deferment agreement -- after december 18th 2004. immigrant families in las vegas are being targeted and scammed by businesses pretending to be immigration lawyers and

thousand people are expected at a fashion convention right here in las vegas. it's called "magic". thousands of exhibitors show off the latest clothing trends at the las vegas and mandalay bay convention centers. the new trend is 3-d printed clothing. a local company "blue dragon" showed off their styles. they can print a dress in two to four days... while accessories take about a day. the company expects 3-d printing clothing
