change that's grabbing headlines. (claire bow/transgender attorney) "nothing in today's ruling says that a school cannot offer those accommodations and follow the guidance. what they said was they're not forced to follow that guidance." texas and 12 other states argue the bathroom and locker room policy safety and privacy. school districts had feared losing federal funding if they didn't comply with president obama's guidance. but the nationwide injunction eliminates that financial fear. (governor pat mccrory/(r) north carolina ) "i always pick, in any decision, i always pick common sense values to protect our children, our schools over money." that was the north carolina governor's reaction after losing the 2017 all- star game because of restrictions on

bathrooms. the governor stands by the state's policy, but advocates for transgender rights say if school districts don't stop discriminatory policies they are likely to be facing lawsuits. (claire bow/transgender attorney) "there's nothing like getting a call, first thing in the morning, from a parent of a trans child telling you that they attempted suicide the night before and those parents will protect their children any way that they can." i'm betty cross reporting the clark county school district tells fox five it does not have a transgender bathroom policy. a spokesperson says when these situations arise - the student generally prefers to keep it confidential. the school district says it works closely with the family and the student to reach a resolution. a custom cake order in california ... came with a slice of controversy on social media. a recent order for a birthday cake... was made with a request for a "ken doll" in a dress. the owner of the freeport bakery in sacramento says

facebook - setting off a fierce online debate. some found the gender-bending image playful - while others got angry - and took sides over l-g-b-t rights. "first i was shocked, and then i was surprised, and then i thought well you can't make everyone happy." "it's just too bad that you have to pick on a cake! (laughter)" the bakery owner says she did lose some followers on facebook due to the cake... but she says overall - the response has been positive. school is back in session for students in oakland california... but many missed the first day. it's all over a new vaccine law that's taken effect. the oakland unified school district says they turned away hundreds of students who failed to meet the states new immunization requirements. before the law... parents with personal beliefs against vaccines could opt out... but exemptions are now much stricter - and some student come from families who just don't know about the

"we have a lot of students who are english language learners into our city and those students wouldn't have been in school...and many times in our country at all, so they wouldn't have known as well." oakland unified school district has partnered with local clinics and kaiser--to help families meet the law and get immunized quickly... undergraduates can no longer drink hard liquor on the campus of stanford university. the ban includes alcohol that has more than 20- percent alcohol by volume or 40 proof. beer and wine are still allowed. comes months after former stanford swimmer brock turner was sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a woman after a party. both turner and the victim had been drinking that night. the current television rating system is not accurate -- and very little help to parents... that's the conclusion of a new study published in the journal "pediatrics". the study revealed violence is prevalent across shows - regardless of rating. researchers say violence as portrayed on t-v is "trivialized and

time differentiating it from reality. parents are encouraged to watch with their children - and talk about media and risky behaviors whenever possible. students in a second-grade class in texas are getting a break from homework. teacher brandy young sent this letter home to the parents in the godley independent school district. the letter announced her new homework policy. she said research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance so she said she would not be formally assigning homework this year. young wrote that instead of homework - she suggested parents spend their evenings eating dinner as a family, reading together, playing outside and getting your child to bed early. the new york times... targeted in a cyber-attack. how the hack could be part of a bigger plot. and...if you don't count government employees... more than half

a florida man meets a woman online... and things go well enough - that he invites her back to his place. but the hook-up turns out to be a scam... and ends with the man dead. melissa marino has the details - from just outside tampa. it sounds like a story from a hollywood movie. but- this nightmare is all too real for the family of 26- year old adam hilarie. (angel cruz/victim's brother) "i would never want no one to be in the shoes i am on right now, or my family, or any of our close friends, anyone."

hilarie met this woman-- 18-year-old haliey bustos on the online dating site 'plenty of fish.' they went on a date thursday and ended up at his place on sunset avenue. police believe it was all part of a sick plan.. (dep. chief andy ray/auburndale, fl police dept.) "she did get a look inside his apartment of what he had." a few hours later bustos went back to hilarie's apartment.. with these three men. (dep. chief andy ray/auburndale, fl police dept.) "i think the plan was that he get robbed and that they take his stuff." at some point there was a struggle. police tell us that's when andre warner pulled the trigger. they believe bustos used the online dating site to lure hilarie in-- and this may not be her first time. (dep. chief andy ray/auburndale, fl police dept.) "her comfort with the way this went didn't seem like it would've been the first time. if she hasn't done it then she has talked to people who have done it." now a little girl will grow up without her father. his family and police want his death to be a warning for others. (angel cruz/victim's brother) "he had to sacrifice his life for it not to happen anymore." the suspects are charged with conspiracy to commit robbery... robbery with a firearm and deadly weapon... and first-degree murder. traffic deaths are on the rise... and it's due to an improving economy... and a drop in gas prices. the improved conditions mean more people are on the road. traffic deaths in the first half of 2016 were up almost 10- percent... that's compared to the same period last year. the national safety council says increased speed limits in rural areas - and lack of helmet use for motorcyclists are both factors... but also partially blames the increase on low gas prices and the improved economy. for many americans - a trip to the pharmacy can result in sticker shock. people in the united states pay more for their prescription drugs than anywhere else in the world. a new study says the provision of "market exclusivity" - allows drug companies to

"there have been a number of studies showing, when generic drugs enter the market that drug prices fall substantially. money that is spent unnecessarily on expensive drugs cannot be spent in other areas of health care delivery." also - sometimes doctors prescribe medications without knowing the cost to the patient... not realizing that it will be more than the patnt can afford. in kentucky - some people are gong to the state fair in louisville - and coming home with something they didn't expect to get - the "quran". copies of the muslim holy book are being handed out by two men working a booth who represent a group called the "furquaan project". it's part of a movement- hoping to reach people living in rural counties where there aren't any mosques. so far - the men say they've handed out two-thousand copies of the book for free. some people politely turn them down.
