our homepage - at fox five vegas dot com. people in need of a life saving drug are experiencing sticker shock at store counters. the price of epi- pens has skyrocketed hundreds of dollars in the last couple of years. fox5's abby theodros looked into that price hike...she also talked to a valley patient who needs the drug but can't afford it. health care analysts are saying the wholesale cost of an epipen has jumped from 47 dollars in 2007... to 284-dollars this year. so now the retail price for a prescription of two pens is about 633-dollars.. leaving plenty of people looking for alternatives. kim dawes: my throat will start swelling up and if i dont get medical attention right away i could die. kim dawes is talking about her life threatening food reaction.. kim dawes: i developed as i grew older to flax seed of all things she developed the allergy in 2007 - after eating a bran muffin with a few seeds baked in kim dawes: right when i took a bite

cap in my throat. and i started freaking out. one hand started swelling up and it looked like a micky mouse glove. and i turned bright red and i started hyperventallating. and my husband took me to the emergency room. since then she's carried an epi-pen. one shot of the drug can slow heart rates, open airways and reduce blood pressure. its a solution she says she can no longer afford. pharmacist: typically patients are caught off guard - as you would imagine both patients and pharmacists are feeling the impact of the hike. since mylan took over the rights to the drug - the cost of two epi-pens has jumped to more than 600 dollars. one pharmacist says its because a similar drug was recalled -causing more demand for the epipen pharmacist: they do have a monopoly in the market place, and since the recall we've been seeing the price escalate to a very high price mark. since the changes - mylan's ceo has come underfire for giving herself a big pay raise .. but when asked, the company said in a statement quote- "this change to the industry is not an easy

address but we recognize the need and are committed to working with customers and payors to find solutions to meet the needs of the patients and families we serve" we spoke with dawes and she tells me she's currently using something called adrena-click. it serves the same purpose but its about 150 dollars for two. since the most recent price surge - law makers have come out against the changes. hillary clinton also issued a statement calling the increase "outrageous" nevada students' act scores are the worst in the nation. on average, the class of 2016

out of 36. that's the lowest of the 18 states that test their high school juniors. nevada tested more than 32,000 students in the graduating class of 2016. for the past two years, the results have shown that only about 10 percent of the nevada test takers are college-ready in four key subjects. college students at u-n-l-v are moving into their new home and getting ready for the fall semester. this year the university is welcoming exactly four- thousand first year students-- it's biggest freshman about 18-hundred of all students at u-n-l-v will be living in the dorms. the u-n-l-v executive director of housing and campus life says returning students will be pleasently suprised when they walk through the doors. "we spend all summer getting ready for this, you know, we put 1.9 million dollars on renovations this summer so we're excited to see the expressions on the students faces when they come back and especially for those students who are coming back for a second or a third year. their like 'wow! you did this over the

a house exploded in illinois - sending two people inside hurtling out of the home. it happened in the city of washington - near peoria- while most of the neighborhood was sleeping around two a-m. emergency responders arrived to find the property full of debris and the house on fire. the only part of the home left standing was a chimney. the husband and wife who were inside the home were found lying

outside. the husband was about 20 feet from the house. both are expected to recover from their injuries. "well we were woken up about a quarter til 2 with just a loud boom and the whole house shook -- we just didn't really know what to think and weren't thinking of an explosion or anything" authorities are looking into a gas leak as a possible cause. the illinois state fire marshal is assisting the investigation. a major freeway shutdown in southern california today. it was due to a crash... involving three big rigs. the wreck happened on the seven-10 in long beach. two big rig drivers had to be rescued from their trucks after getting trapped. one of the victims is in critical condition at a trauma center. all lanes of the freeway at or near the crash site were closed for seven hours while crews cleared the scene. police believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. polls indicate it's a longshot - but that's not stopping donald trump from trying to convince

national convention. fenway park is getting another facelift - just in time for the 2017 season. the boston landmark commission gave the red sox the green light on four of its six proposed changes. one of them includes replacing the famous "pesky pole" - named after red sox great - johnny pesky. an architect says the new version will look just like the original - but will be solid and up to code. another change - the big "cumberland farms" sign in right field will be replaced with a gi screen. but some fans don't like that idea. "my seat faces the field. i see green, i see the ball players. and if i want to see video, i know where to find it." the red sox also plan to replace the bullpen field with a removable wall - and add seating and a bar to the right field grandstand. the red sox also asked permission to move both dugouts three and a half feet closer to the field in order to add 124 more seats around them.
