live from las vegas it's time for fox5 news at 11. students are headed back to school next week, but some of their teachers might not not be there, the paper work issues keeping teachers out of the classroom. captioning will resume shortly and flooding in the valley tonight .. even though there was no rain today.. where the water is still affecting people trying to get to anf from their homes. this is fox5 news at 11. local las vegas. with school only a few days away, there's trouble for some teachers who cannot be licensed in time for the opening bell. i'm john huck. i'm christine

what sounds like a minor and mundane issue .. could leave dozens of local teachers at home next week. the school district blames the state department of education .. which in turn is blaming the teachers. fox5's miguel martinez valle spoke to some teachers caught in the middle, they say either way the students will be the ones affected. at a time when most teachers are setting up their classroom and planning lessons for the upcoming year, some are stuck in paperwork limbo... hoping their teacher lice processed in time to start classes. some clark county teachers wont be at school to greet their kids on the first day... " i'm not going to be working, i'm not going to be with my students, or get paid until the background check clears and they finish my paperwork to send out a renewal license." you see they're stuck in renewal limbo... their teacher licenses expired over the summer, and though they turned their renewal applications in in
11:02 pm
won't be processed in time... " we're processing license applications from the week of july 11th, and thats the normal process time" " they said it will be 6 to 8 weeks, there is nothing they can do" the department of education says they're not backed up... they always get more applications in the summer and teachers should know to get their licensing done early... except... some teachers say they tried to do just that... " being proactive, i was trying to email and call the department of licensing, i called them 14 times i emailed them 6 and they never got back to me" but now .. with they just have to wait... " the director told me it was all my fault, he said all of this is public information, you should have went on the website you should have called someone." " i lose everything september first, i wont have medical insurance i wont receive pay, i lose all of my contracted days" the school district says there's nothing it can do because of state licensing laws... which has these teachers worried not only for their families, but also
11:03 pm
kids, my kids have to start, and i teach 850 kids in an elementary school, and they have to start without me, they have to start their science classes without me, and then i get to come in and try to clean up whatever happened when i wasn't there" these were just two of the many teachers i spoke to about the issue... some tried getting into their classrooms by trying to be substitutes but as of today a few of them were told they could'n't do that due to licensing requirments...
11:04 pm
district says it wants teachers in the classroom .. but cant have unlicensed teachers. it will bring in subsitutes in their place until the licensing goes through. something else on teh minds of nevada educators needs to be helping students score well in college placement tests. but just this week we found out nevada students' a-c-t scores are the worst in the nation. on average, the class of 2016 scored 17-point-7 that's the lowest of the 18 states that test high school juniors. for the past two years, the results have shown that only about 10 percent of the nevada test takers are college-ready in four key subjects. a cancer patient gets her truck back after someone stole it yesterday afternoon. it's a story you saw only on fox5. carolyn shirley reed was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and she and her husband john say they're so thankful for everything the community did to

carolyn is fighting stage four breast cancer.. and needs the truck to get to and from chemo treatments. this morning their truck was found about 15 minutes away at a gas station at twain and nellis. carolyn told fox5 the inside is trashed and electronics are stolen, but she's excited to have it back.
