speed zones. our team coverage includes eric hilt in the newsroom-- but we begin with fox5's adam herbets live at harriet treem elementary school-- and adam, police were busy writing tickets today to make sure drivers, including parents, know the law. police say they held nothing back today when it came to driving in school zones. they say dont care if the rules are new... its the parents job to know what the rules are... and the best way to learn, is to get hit with a ticket. as far as where we are right now -- boy did it look different about an hour ago. take a look at some video. its always crazy on the first day of school... especially because parents want to park... get out of the car.... and walk their little ones to class. a lot of the kids we talked to today said they had no idea why it took so long to get to class... because they already had

back to school doens't mean going into the school building... some ccsd schools have dozens of portable classrooms because there are just too many students to fit inside the building. fox 5's eric hilt toured one of the district's most overcrowded schools today and joins us live in the newsroom with the story. that school is william v wright elementary school. it's near blue diamond and

say thats the fastest growing part of the district, and now they're trying to play catch-up the first day of school isn't just nervewracking for kids... nats it is for teachers, too. "last night i had a really hard time sleeping because i was nervous bu excited" this is nicole gladish's third year teaching at william v wright elementary school... nats -- classroom and all three of those years she's taught outside the school building .. in a portable classroom like this one. the school's short-term solution to a long-term problem with overcrowding. "one of the hardest parts of being in the portable is not having access to all the technoloogy inside, you have to walk in there but if you're in one of the pods you can easily send out kids to do vmath whereas here we dont have that opportunity" nicole's classroom is one of 28 portable classrooms at wright elementary... it even has a portable cafeteria and portable bathrooms.

students...this year there's nearly 13- hundred. "it's over twice as many as what should be in this school" but ccsd says a solution is in sight for teachers at one of the districts most overcrowded school. a new elementary school is planned to be built just three miles away -- reducing the number of students at wright. "a school will open up just to the southwest of here that wil help us in 20-19, so we are trying to catch up now" a game of catch up that the district says will years. ccsd's goal is to get portables out of every elementary school... they have portables at middle and high schools as well -- but the district says it does not think it will be able to get rid of those any time soon. soc you can find answers to all

"kids come in and their faces are just so full of excitement and joy. they wanna get to know their new teacher. they wanna learn and it's such a great feeling so we just want to make sure that we keep that excitement going throughout the entire year." around 15- hundred buses hit the roads to bring students to and from school. pat skorkowsky says a good first day starts with bus drivers. they are trained to make sure students are safe... and following the rules while on the road. students at matt kelly elementary got a red carpet welcome for their first day. (applause and high fives) they were greeted by hundreds of male volunteers with the nevada youth network. the goal is to show kids that they have strong male role models

supporting them. nevada youth network's founder -- michael flores -- says mentorship is a critical part of a students success. he says it's time for the men to step it up. "we saw this in other cities across the country where they had a lot of men show up and welcome the kids back especially in troubled areas and that's what we're trying to do today." the volunteers are asked to come back to the school at least one day out of the year to spend time with the kids... read a book... or just hang out. let's check in with fox five's chief meteorlogist ted pretty with a look at the forecast. more heat expected through the workweek with cooler temperatures ahead for labor day weekend. we'll see 103 on tuesday with 102 expected both wednesday and thursday. friday we'll see 99. southwest breezes

knocked on nearby neighbors doors... and explained the situation.... they had a lot to say..... again it all started late last night.. just before 11:30 when metro received a call of a child shooting themself in the abdomen.....near decatur and ann road.... now neighbors i spoke with today believe it was the boy who lives at this house.. they say he is around 10..11 years old.... shock and surprise is the best way to guage the reaction of nearby neighbors.....who exchange hello and goodbye's with the family..... "typical vegas you have to expect it, but it is a surprise because we never had an issue like th i we have lived here, it's the reason i chose this complex, it's pretty quiet, so yeah it's surprising, you see the news everyday, you got to expect it." neighbors tell me this is just another tragic event... but another learning lesson for parents out there to keep an extra eye on your children... now metro tells fox-5 the investigation is ongoing... and the abuse and neglect department are the lead on the case... they are the ones who will decide if

thousands are receiving construction skills training for "project neon". it's designed to between sahara and the spaghetti bowl safer. the task will create thousands of local jobs. "these are all going to be local hires. here in las vegas. we have skilled and ready here. and so we're happy to bring jobs here to southern nevada. project neon will create 4000 jobs in total." "project neon" is being called the largest transportation infrastructure project in the

counstruction training will focus on how to make mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls. it will require more than a hundred-thousand man hours to finish. construction will last through the summer of 2019. thousands of southwest pilots may get a raise soon... after four years of negotiations. the union for the pilots say they've reached a tentative deal. it would give around 8- thousand pilots better contracts... including retroactive pay raises back to 2013. this deal comes after pilots picketed at dallas last week... which is a hub for southwest. the raise is not a done deal yet. the union will meet to review the offer next month. after that -- it has to vote on the terms... which could happen in november. and an online travel agency is offering travelers the chance to buy airline tickets... and make monthly payments. "cheap air dot com" teamed up with a finance company to come up with purchase plans to cover airfare. the method is

the new champions of this year's little league world series were welcomed home in new york. "cheers as kids give high fives" a parade was held for the maine- endwell little league world champions. family and friends gathered to greet the team... who arrived from pennsylvania by bus to their home ball park in union. maine-endwell is the first u-s team in five years to win the little league the weekend. they beat a team from south korea... two to one. "the most exciting part for me was just how they were recognized for their tremendous sportsmanship. so i, i'm thrilled for them, they certainly earned their victory, and they certainly earned their sportsmanship award with how they conducted themselves on the field and the professionals that they were off the field." maine-endwell is also the first team from new york to win since 19-64. with the world series victory...
