breaking news tonight at six.. a man in custody for homicide .. escapes from north las vegas police. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. the man was being held for a deadly shooting that happened this past weekend. fox5's vince sapienza is live on cheyenne near simmons at the detective bureau where escaped .. vince. that's right john christine i'm standing in the back of the north las vegas detective burea building....where i'm told 25 year old alonzo perez escaped police custody after breaking off his handcuffs while being detained in a holding room here is what he looks like... 25 year old alonzo perez 6'03" tall, 200 lbs., with black hair, brown eyes, and a goatee... he also

as drivers head to their labor day destinations... "la for a dodgers game" "san diego" ....businesses along i15 are getting ready for their labor day crowds. nats shops say they brought in more workers than usual to make sure they can keep up with travelers stopping in for gas or food, and say this weekend will be one of the busiest of the year. with the biggest booms coming on monday and today. nats but it's not just businesses -- drivers are hoping to navigate the holiday weekend crowds too. some with apps on their phone like this one called waze "you just pretty much type in your destination and then and it tells you if there's something ahead like traffic cops, and object in the road hazards, and you're able to interact with other people and say if you see a hazard" and others with old fashioned planning "we've been ahead of schedule so we're happy" drivers told me

a fire sparked at a church is now being investigated as arson. it happened early this morning at the "holy trinity a-m-e church" near lake mead and fifth street. a reverend at the church tells fox5 they believe it was vandalism. she says someone threw something with liquid at the door and through the window.... and that's what caught the drapes on fire. fire crews say no one was hurt... and the blaze caused about ten-thousand dollars in damages. a man may have been burned while jumping from a burning apartment building. that's what witnesses told police. fire investigators say the flames were started by squatters. fox5's abby theodros spoke with neighbors who say this is an

abby: "this gate and do not enter sign are just a few precautions one property owner took to keep squatters away but it wasnt enough. neighbors agree the problem is getting out of hand." fritzie stephins, neighbor: it scares me. the early morning fire at a vacant apartment complex near the stratosphere scares neighbor fritzie stephins.. but it doesnt surprise her. fritzie stephin s, neighbor: the whole neighborhood is full of squatters so ..and we had two fires previously and they were both caused by squatters. witnesses told investigators they saw a man jump out of a second story window while the complex was on fire. they say they found a man with second degree burns a few blocks away and he was taken to the hospital. car nat fox 5 called the property owner...he didnt want to go on camera but told us the complex has been vacant since january. which is about the same time he started getting squatters. nats he says he's tried everything...includi ng signs, a gate and locks...nothing's worked.

there was evidence that squatters were staying in the building. typically what they do is they leave trash behind like we do in our homes. its not clear how the man got inside... but tim szymanksi with las vegas fire and rescue... says squatters are getting more creative tim szymanski: we have people that dig holes underneath the foundations to crawl in. they have hidden holes, they'll come in through the roof. they'll go in through places where you they cant be found. abby theodros fox5news local las vegas. investigators say they're still looking into the cause of the fire. the e-s-a or education savings account program remains tied up in court-- which changed the plans for teachers and parents in clark county. fox5's kathleen jacob talked to one teacher who is out of a job because of the drawn out decision. guys it looked like e-s-a funding wasn't coming down in time for the new school year... so charlie melven had to make a different plan.

that were affected by this." charlie melvin was supposed to start a new job at david o'mckay academy this year... and her children were going to be new students.... but they depended on esa funding... which is still tied up in court. "once we saw that timeline creep up and creep up, it started getting scary!" and they weren't the only ones getting nervous. the issue of esa funding has been locked in court because some argue it takes money away from already struggling public schools. "we all realized you gotta jump ship, and that's what happened. as more people left... david o'mckay academy was left scrambling. we had to downsize, we're pretty much bare bones right now. more than a dozen teachers were let go in the past few weeks and charlie says she would have been one of them if she hadn't opted to leave herself. i feel awful for them..because now they no longer have a place for their kids you know where we should have this school choice, but also.. now they're unemployed. school head stephen wood understands the struggle. "you talk about 5 thousand dollars
