first elected clark county commissioner in 1974 and served for more than two decades. during her tenure - she oversaw a mccarran international airport expansion and flood control projects. she was also later elected to the nevada system of higher education board of regents and served on the las vegas valley water district board. democratic poltical leaders... are honoring "the union movement" on labor day. senator harry reid says - quote - "the labor movement secured better wages, reasonable hours conditions for all americans." "it's tireless efforts put an end to child labor and built the american middle class." catherine cortez masto also took labor day as an opportunity to blast congressman joe heck for not supporting a minimum wage increase. the two are locked in a tight election battle to take over reid's job as u-s senator. the national mall has been undergoing a historic multi- year restoration project... that is now in its final stages. lauren blanchard is in washington - with more on a

which is just months away from being unveiled to the public. nats say: "this is america's front- yard and we want it to be available to everybody." stretching from the steps of the u.s. capitol to the banks of the potomac river, the national mall - also known as america's front lawn... leaves a lasting impression on tourists. the mall sees an estimated 30-million visitors each year ... making it one of the most heavily trafficked grounds in the country. so, how exactly do they keep it looking so great all year long -- year after year? well, as we learned -- it hasn't always looked this great after years of wear-and-tear ... the lawn area has been undergoing a years-long intense restoration project ... in an effort to preserve it long- term ... townsend says: "over the course of the last 45 years, since the last turf panels have been repaired ... it was a much needed repair ... both just to sustain it for durability ... for better irrigation ... better long-term resilience."

task ... the effort started in 20-07 ... and is now nearing completion .... the final phases involve the mall's turf restoration. one of the leading forces behind it is michael stachowicz -- head of turf management ... he and his team meticulously seed, monitor and manicure the grounds as each stage is completed. stachowicz says: "as for as construction goes, this is a huge collaboration" also helping to make it all come together is john deere manufacturing. from the beginning ... their equipment has played a key role in giving the iconic landscape a needed facelift ... stachowicz says: "the donation of the ... important for a lot of reasons ... operating equipment that was 30 years old ..." the main goal of the project was to ultimately improve the park's ability to serve the public need for national celebrations, demonstrations, festivals - and a

north korea has fired three ballis into the sea off its east coast... flying about six hundred miles - hitting japan's air defense identification zone. as benjamin hall reports - north korea's move is in direct violation of u-n policy. south korea's military says north korea fired three missiles from the town of hwangju. the missiles flew six hundred miles across the country before splashing into the sea near japan. the action seen by

violation of u-n resolutions. june-hyuck says: " north korea again has committed provocations amid concerns over the country's nuclear and missile threats, as expressed by leaders of countries participating in the g20 summit. abe says: "north korea's missile launch) it is an intolerable and reckless act of jeopardising the peace and stability of the region. it is strongly condemned and is unforgivable. it is a clear violation of the un security council resolution. this is a clear provocation international community." even though china went to extraordinary lengths to ensure a smooth g-20 summit... they are standing by north korea while urging a peaceful resolution. chunying says: "we hope that all parties can avoid taking actions that might lead to escalation of tensions and make joint efforts to maintain peace and stability on the peninsula." the united states also condemning the launches.. saying they are discussing the proper response

that topic in the states as well. we don't want a new border in germany. but we need controlled borders. it was the first of five regional votes before a national election next september. the chancellor's popularity has plunged after germany took in more than a million refugees last year. a poll finds support for the "black lives matter" movement has increased among young white adults. the survey also indicates that a majority of white, black, asian and hispanic young adults now support the movement calling for acun for police in the deaths of african-americans. fifty-one percent of white adults between the ages of 18 and 30 say in a "gen-forward" poll they now strongly or somewhat support black lives matter. that's a 10-point increase since june. most young whites also think the movement's rhetoric encourages violence against the police. the vast majority of young blacks say it doesn't. a seattle woman is trying to bring back a swimming tradition this labor day weekend. erika norris swam ten-point-four

now back in the wild in colorado. it's all thanks to the work of the "nature and raptor center of pueblo". listen to this. "go on baby... go fly... (cheers) i didn't want to let go, it was so pretty i wanted it to last longer. it really was quite nice. it was very calm and i don't know i just looked at it's eyes and it was just, it was beautiful." that's the voice of an outdoor enthusiast.... chosen to help the bird fly free. the young red- tailed hawk was hurt in a storm a couple months ago... now - she's nursed back to health and back in her natural environment - where she belongs. the nature and raptor center of pueblo sees as many as 250 injured birds every year... ...and tries to help as many as possible return to the wild - after getting the help they need. thanks for joining us.. fox5 news at 6 o'clock is straight
