the open-house meeting was at nearby jacobson elementary... and that's when officials learned the mercury might have been on campus since friday. a couple who spoke to fox five said their son was one of nine contaminated. they say he was playing with mercury he found under school bleachers on tuesday... a day before the lockdown. he told us yesterday that he saw whatever it was, the liquid on the floor in the hallway, the sport area, he told the teacher and she said don't worry about it." but he touched it and put his finger on his shirt, and after that, he ate! he had his lunch. he had a honey bun and that's probably why he gets diarrhea and bad headache. the environmental protection agency...first responders... and hazmat crews were called in wednesday. parents waited in the parking lot overnight. they were there for hours, until their kids were cleared

now for the first time since the lockdown -- the superintedent of the clark county school district is speaking publicly... fox5's adam herbets is at johnson junior high - he joins us live with the very latest. according to the superintendent, last night was the first time anyone in the district heard that the mercury could have been at this school on friday. and that means parents want to kn h world could they possibly know if their kids are clean if they weren't even screened until wednesday. obviously -- i mean you guys saw it. last nights meeting was a mess. i dont think anyone left that place happy. and in addition to all these specific questions that couldnt be answered -- there was one question they could answer, but didnt. where is the superintendent. why isn't he the one here answering these question... today he broke his silence, but it wasnt in front of a bunch of angry parents. it was just to our

angry mom: why do we have to watch the news?!? superintendent: every parent has a right to be angry, but they also have a right to listen to explanations and trying to understand how we don't all have the information to the questions that they're asking right now. superintendent was there last night, judging by the questions i heard at the meeting, i dont know if he would have been a whole lot of help. and hes been very up front about that -- he knows its difficult because its difficult for him too not to know. now he says the next step is calling parents individually... and trying to get them answers that

"we talk about this any time we have a major incident. parents being aware of what their students have. be aware of what's going on in their backpacks. be aware of what they are looking at on the internet." a quick search online shows some websites selling mercury in both liquid and powder forms - often from other countries. major u-s retail sites like e-bay and amazon do not sell mercury... but may re-direct your search to gallium - a non-toxic element similar to

a you-tube search shows videos of people claiming to play with mercury - pouring it on tables - doing tricks - and running fingers through it. we want to warn you - do not try this yourself. mercury is considered extremely toxic and dangerous. at this point - we don't know what the students at walter johnson were doing with the sustance -- or how it was obtained. we are still waiting on further details from investigators. c-c-s-d also facing another issue.... how to break up the school district - and make it more manageable. today a plan to take power from the district and give it to schools was approved... fox5's eric hilt joins us with more on the plan and what it means for parents across the county. the new plan will work like this... --each individual school will set up a volunteer board... --that board will be made up of teachers, parents, support staff and even a student. --it's that board that will hold meetings and decide on a budget for the school. the plan was

and that decision came after months of debate, discussions and forums. after the vote i asked ccsd superintended pat skorkowski what this means for the hundreds of thousands of parents with kids in the school district -- this is what he told me. "hopefully the parents will notice the openness that schools will be getting into and will make sure that they're getting involved and getting engaged in their child's work. they dont have to be an organizational team member to be engaged in their child's school" while that team will decide what money, the amount of money going to each school will be decided by the district. administrators will use a formula based on the number of kids at each school... and schools with more special needs students, gifted students, english as a second language students or students in poverty will get more money.

live look now. the las vegas paiute tribe calls today's demonstration near the bellagio an "act of peace and prayer". it says the fight is for clean water, human rights and respect for native american treaties. a federal judge today refused today to block the pipeline over environmental concerns. an onsite investigation this week - at a water park in kansas - where 10 year old caleb schwab was killed. the boy was decapitated - while riding the "verruckt" - the world's tallt water slide. crews are using digital tools - to chart the precise dimensions of it. so far - no lawsuit has been filed by the family of schwab - or two women who suffered minor injuries - while riding down the slide with the boy. lawyers say they are waiting for the results of a police investigation - and other information. a car appeared to be floating on the side of a parking garage in austin, texas. turns out, it was hanging from wires after the driver said he

to park. here it is... a 2004 toyota 4 runner, hanging by a guide wire that was wrapped around one of the wheels. the 24-year-old driver said the suv flipped end-over down the side of the garage from the ninth story. he was inside... and with the help of a bystander, was able to climb out of a window to safety. police and firefighters were able to lower it to the ground safely with minimal collateral damage. a store clerk escapes serious in car crashes into his store in connecticut. you can see the dark blue ford explorer backing away from the store. it then starts coming forward - and suddenly accelerates - smashing right through the front door sending shelves flying. the clerk went flying as well. from another camera angle - you can see the impact as the worker is tossed among the debris. he has no broken bones - but lots of aches - pains - cuts and bruises. clinton

the fifteenth anniversary of the 9-11 attacks is this weekend. here at home... a healing field is dedicated to the victims lost in that tragedy. two thousand nine hundred ninety six flags represent the lives lost that day. this is at the palm northwest mortuary and cemetary. anyone can come and see the flags - and take one home for a donation. the proceeds will benefit the southern nevada fire fighters burn foundation. "they are our local heroes that we can say thank you for what they do for our community and those who suffer loses in fires. the flags will be on sale through the 16-th. the cemetary will also hold a memorial service at their chapel sunday at noon. palo verde high school has a special connection with "nine- eleven". it's the day they lost one of their own. foreign language teacher-- barbara edwards-- was a passenger on american airlines

every anniversary-- the high school air force... j-r-o-t-c... staff and students hold a flag ceremony in honor of all the "nine-eleven" victims. "it does really mean a lot because she means a lot to the school and it really represents how that day affected everywhere across the nation. all the way to a teacher down here in palo verde in las vegas, nevada." the current students of palo verde were two years old - or younger - during the nine-eleven attacks... but they say learning about it now helps them feel connected. there's much more coming up in the second half of fox5 news at 5. danny tarkanian's carrying a lot of baggage. as a real-estate developer, tarkanian was penalized for failing to pay thousands in property taxes. tarkanian was ordered by a judge to repay $17 million in a failed development scheme. tarkanian refused to pay the money back, forcing taxpayers to bail him out, leaving us holding the bag.

thanks for joining us for your only local news at 5:30. let's get you up to date with the latest local headlines. a north las vegas judge set bail at more than one- point-six million for a homicide suspect who was re-arrested four days after he escaped police custody. that brought the total bail for alonso perez to more than one- point-seven million in cases in two cities. perez appeared by video on thursday from the clark county jail, where he's also bein held on criminal charges in a las vegas shooting case. minutes earlier - as las vegas judge set his bail at 100- thousand - pending a preliminary hearing on domestic battery, assault and shooting into a building charges. perez was on the run for four days.... after wiggling out of handcuffs - and escaping a police interview room on friday. he used a chair to climb out through the ceiling. perez was re- captured tuesday night. the next day - north las vegas police announced a change in procedure - to make sure
